To the people on here say the 883 is a bigger bike it's not it a smaller bike the bolt is 1" wider and 1 1/2" longer and the bolt has better brakes and transmission yeah it a Yamaha you know what you are buying it's not a Harley Davidson we all know .so don't think you are getting a Harley Davidson it's not but still a great bike for the money so to the Harley Davidson guys out there hating grow up it's not the 60's be happy to see more people on motorcycle and stop crying about Japanese bike you all sound like you have a sister that's your mom.. I say get the bike you like and want to ride who cares about what names on it just get out there and have fun and be safe

Debating between bolt and iron? When repairs/parts are needed is the bolt going to be much less than the Harley? Is the bolt going to be more reliable?

I have this bike and i have to say that i can seem to
    Find anything
Wrong with it. I did my research for over 4 months between the harley and yamaha and when it came down to stats the bolt takes it in paper and real life. If you are planning to get your first bike this would a great choice. Am actually thinking of switching to a HD seventytwo or a nightster because they have more power and they are 1200 ccs and have the same bobber style to it but if the yamaha comes out with a bolt with more ccs i would with them in a heart beat. Then again its all about preference test ride them both.

Those are excellent but hd has a btr warranty twice as long. I elected for the 883 for my son.
Embrace all cruisers guys. We want those guys on harleys one day, don't alienate our future customers.

they bough the bolt and traded it in for a harley 250 miles later. Looks like they picked the wrong bike. Probably on a iron 883 now.

The iron isn't half the machine the bolt is. All the Yamaha cruisers are better than anything Harley makes when it comes right down to it. In every way, Yamaha makes a smoother, more reliable, faster, better handling and with the right tinkering, just as good looking bike as Harley does. What a Yamaha cruiser won't do is prop up an insecure ego that's craving for the respect it thinks it get's from riding a Harley Davidson. The clown who bought this bike was probably concerned with what other people thought, was probably concerned that people thought he was a poser. If you're buying a bike to impress other people...you have other issues you should be dealing with. Buy the bike you like and be damned with what other people think. For those who don't know...at least one third of every Harley is made in Japan or other countries...yep, the suspension, the electrical and electronics, the fuel injection and probably the tires are not made in the USA. Sure they have nice paint jobs and are well made, but so are most bikes now. Don't be to quick to drink the Harley Koolaide.

savagemako17 Why do you say the yamaha is a better machine. Personal experience? Have you ever owned both a iron 883 and a bolt? You can argue all of those things you put up there and I can't say if you're right or wrong because I've never owned a bolt. What I can argue is your comment about reliability. Back in the 70's and early 80's you could have argued harley's weren't reliable, but from 84 and up they are extremely reliable. How many yamahas do you see out there with over 100k miles? I haven't seen many myself, but I have seen (in person) and online tons of harley's with over 100k miles with no major maintenance. I'm sorry, but the bolt is a knock off of the iron and you can't deny that. To be honest I think its a great looking bike and wouldn't mind owning one myself. I ride harley's and have grown up around them my whole life, but I'm not one of those people that hates other makes like you obviously are. I'll ride anything with 2 wheels. hell I own a 1982 yamaha xj550 that's in my garage next to the harley's. I just stated the obvious in my comment. They traded a bike in with 250 miles on it. That tells me they didn't like it. so they probably got an iron 883 or a 1200. Some people may be happy with their bolt, but the person who traded this one in wasn't one of them.

savagemako17 I forgot to mention. I neither own a bolt or an iron 883. Never even rode either model. I have 2 fxr's one an 86 the other a 90. the 86 is rolling over to 87,000 miles in the next few days here with no major maintenance. Just changing all 3 fluids. The 90 is still a baby with 26k miles. I hate when people make a comment or give advice on something they've never personally owned or experienced first hand and just pass along what they heard or read on the internet and think it's true.

MrAgove The only Harley I've ever owned was a 99' XLX Sportster Sport. Harley's hot rod Sportster at the time. I owned it 4 years and put around 20k miles on it. It was an OK bike and I admit, I liked the way it looked better than anything else about it. This was before the rubber mounted engine, so at any speeds above 70mph it was almost painful to ride and above 80mph it felt like I was getting electrocuted through the bars the vibes were so bad. I had come off a Japanese liter bike prior to that, so needless to say, the Sportsters performance was less than stellar...I wasn't expecting much and I wasn't disappointed when I didn't get much. I didn't care much for the stock seating position on the sporty either and yes, I did know what I was getting into because I had rented a 98' 883 just to see if I enjoyed the experience. I figured I could get used to anything. But it never quite happened that way. I sold the bike and never looked back. I went back to Japanese bikes (not cruisers though) and was happy to be back. I rode a friends Yamaha Raider when in North Carolina and thought it was a remarkable machine in virtually every way. It was just more bike than I wanted. I'm 5'9" and weigh 175lb. I don't need or want a nearly 700lb motorcycle.

savagemako17 No, I never rode a Bolt. Sat on one many times, at several dealers in California and I have to say, it feels incredibly natural and very comfortable. The sporty put my knees to far up in the air. Not that way with the bolt. Except for that hideous muffler and air cleaner on the Bolt (all things the after market will tend to in time) I really like the way it looks. So yes, some of my opinion has been formed by what I've watched here on you tube (test rides and road tests) and the rest by the many road tests and comparisons I've read in magazines. Say what you want about these sources, but at the end of the day, when virtually everyone is saying the same thing...there just might be something to it. Lastly, having experience with a broad variety of Yamaha products over the many years...no matter what Yamaha makes, outboard boat engines, motorcycles, snowmobiles, guitars, pianos, trombones, electronic instruments...you name it...Yamaha makes some of the finest of all these things in the world, at any price. They are an over achieving company and are superb at everything they do. No, I do not work for the company, though I wish I did. You want to get a kick out of something...check out the video here on UA-cam called Stunt riding a Yamaha Bolt. This little demo is sponsored by a Harley dealer in Florida. I wonder why they didn't use a Sportster ?

I shoot a lot of the videos myself. You would be shocked how many we've sold on UA-cam, which is crazy because we only meant to use UA-cam to host the videos and embed them on our website. Oh, and UA-cam pays us to leave the videos up because they put ads on them.
