A-Train was a beast, I remember watching a game in the early 2000's when Alstott had a clear path to the end zone, but a defender foolishly stomped at him acting as if he was going to hit him. Alstott changed course and ran his ass over in route to a touchdown. Perfect example of the saying "you mess with the bull you get the horns".
Dude was a different breed. It’s too bad his position has become obsolete these days in the NFL. His run against the Browns in 2002 was probably his most iconic in my opinion.

As a kid, it was pure enjoyment to watch Mike Alstott. That guy was INCREDIBLE. I wasn't a Bucs fan but you could be damn sure I was an Alstott fan.

I used to wear his jersey when I played pickup games with my friends. I don’t know why, but I think it granted me the ability to break at least three tackles each run 😂. Which is all I could do, since I couldn’t catch or throw 😕.
The thing I miss most, that's essentially gone in today's NFL, is the power run game. Ground and pound football was awesome. The QB up under center on the regular. Now it seems mainly finesse running and mostly from the shotgun.
Henry is a good example but imo teams that run are kinda boring to watch, especially when they are just giants bulldozing through

The advents of the wildcard and RPO was the moment when I knew the good old days were over.
They change the rules for the bump and run in 2004. Because in 2003-2004 Season the Colts lost to the patriots un AFC conference final.
Season 2004 Payton Manning beat the record for most TD pass on a Season. 49. Record that was held by Dan Marino since 1984.
The NFL wanted so bad that Manning could Win a SuperBowl.....
And since then, the défense are almost always in nickel défense.

I went to Purdue at the same time we had Alstott in the early 90s. Some pretty bad teams in that timeframe. Back then our offense basically had one play... hand off to Alstott. He would probably get 20+ touches a game. And even though the other team knew what was coming he was unstoppable...just ran people over! It was pretty great to watch. And he got even tougher as a pro.

I remember him on the Ravens. I think he was released because the Texans had just started and each team had to "donate" a veteran to them and I think the Texans released him shortly after that.
Edit: never mind. Apparently the Ravens gave someone else to the Texans.
@@jasonfischer8946 We gave Jamie Sharper and Jermaine Lewis to the Texans, though that was in the following offseason. Holmes we just had to not resign because we were getting into a bad cap situation. Sucked because we really could have used him in 2001 when Jamal Lewis went down.
As a lifetime Buccaneer fan it moved my heart to see that Alstott tribute/acknowledgement, dude was a monster and left everything on the field every game.
The Bucs of the late 90's early 00's were the absolute best show in town. I'm so privileged to have watched that team practically in my own backyard.

Yea they were as a Saints fan I loved watching Alstott play dude was a fucking beast. He gave so many good defenses indigestion. He could truck anybody. Just body people and clear himself a path to the endzone. Just with no offense you, I would love to hear it from a Buc fan's perspective, I always heard from people like my dad who respect Tony Dungy that Gruden was not really that good of a coach and that he won the Super Bowl that year with Tony's team.
I remember when Alstott and Warrick Dunn were in the backfield together, you got Thunder & Lightning, but not know which one was coming. When Alstott and Lorenzo Neal were together, it was just Thunder, but still near impossible to stop.
Lorenzo and Alstott was a cheat code.
Man.. I remember waking up 30 minutes earlier so I could catch top 10 plays every morning before school. ESPN hit hard throughout the 2000’s

Young enough to enjoy todays day and age in the football world, and yet old enough to remember and appreciate how insane it was seeing kickoffs actually being returnable. Anyone that was able to watch Devin Hester do his thing is blessed 💯

growing up watching football in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's makes it hard to watch the game today. Too many rule changes every season. Outside of the Bucs I don't watch very much. The Alstott videos were amazing. He was unbelievable to watch.
As a new football I would like to ask you, how would you describe the chamge? (More/less runs, more/less tackles, pace…?) I’m trying to understand, thank you

The hits were much harder. Less rules protecting receivers and QB’s. They rules they have in place now you almost have to let the receiver make the catch. Running backs were much better and seemed more durable.

You and I are the same age, and to me it feels like a middle ground was leapt over. Do I want Greg Lloyds out there spearing guys? Nope. But my bewilderment over todays game can’t be better encapsulated in those Clay Matthews penalties. I never thought I’d see the day that just tackling hard would be considered illegal.
What's amazing is that Bill Parcells is like the founder of having dual running backs on offense. He believed the game and running back position was too physical and demanding to only have one running back to carry the ball , constantly and consistently.

True story: The Ravens returner in the Super Bowl, Jermaine Lewis, when he returned that kickoff for a touchdown, you see him point up to the sky. His son was stillborn just before the Super Bowl. He dedicated that kickoff return to him. Quite a sentimental moment.
Point to the sky to thank God. I'm not in any way a religious person, but notice how no player praises God after a big game any more? I guess that's now offensive or "racist" or something. That was also the last season before 9/11, I remember just a few months later, the first NFL games after 911, I remember that clear as day. America and the NFL really rallied together and united. Players prayed together at midfield, carrying American flags onto the field (20 years later they're practically spitting on them). Announcers in the studio were even holding up the Bible and it seemed that America was truly united. Now you have kneeling players, politically correct messaging in the end zones and on helmets. We used to believe in the best of each other.
2000 truly was the end of a great era, and the league has been on a downslide ever since then. I get more enjoyment out of watching replays from 20-30 years ago *despite the fact that I already know the outcome*. How sad is that?

12:13 Astroturf is a nightmare. They did make special turf shoes that are decent, but that wasn't the problem. The thing that made it terrible was any time you tackled someone on that stuff, it ripped all of your skin off. It was like a carpet burn but worse. Running backs all either had to have sleeves or turf tape otherwise their forearms would look like they went through a grinder.
Also, a dollar for every time that I saw a player hit a seam and blow out his knee on a play where he wasn't touched.

Mike Alstott is my favorite player of all time. I grew up 60 miles from Tampa so Bucs games were all we got and I was a kid when he was in his prime. I'd kill to see him in his prime again.

I love how a video about the NFL in 2000 briefly became a highlight reel for Mike Alstott halfway through.
I was 12 in 2000, the first game I remember actually understanding was the broncos 1st Superbowl win a few years earlier, and the first game I feel like I knew what happened begining to end was the afc championship of 2001-2002, I'm a lifelong NE resident and it's been a hell of a run and I still root hard for Brady in Tampa!
That Alstott compilation tickled me. Easily my favorite NFL player of all time who wasn't on the Browns.

I grew up watching Barry Sanders, Tony Dorcett and Mike Alstott, whom I met, and the game I just watched on Sunday between the Chiefs and Bills is COMPLETELY different, which QB's scrambling forever, it seems, with side-arm throws, wide outs running everywhere and slot receivers like T. Hill making incredible catches. It was common to see QB's knocked out in the '80 and '90's, today, you can't hardly touch them w/o a flag or ejection. I think we're going to see even more changes to avoid all head-on hits, which is fine, as you don't need to sacrifice your life for a game.
As a Bucs fan, the Mike Alstott highlight package really made me hyped AF. Now that was a fullback. 👏

Watching this video, and having played NBA 2k23 which introduced Eras mode this year... REALLY makes me wish EA cared more about Madden. I would LOVE to have an era mode like NBA 2k where you can go back and play with old school teams and the different schemes they ran.
There was also NFL Blitz. Anyone else remember that game? I used to play that a ton - I really liked the arcade style game-play, they also had NHL Hitz which was also a great game. Too bad the Blitz/Hitz series never caught on, because at the time I preferred both to compared to their EA counterparts with Madden and NHL...

Being a diehard Bucs fan, it warms my heart to see Alstott glorified in such a way and having his badassery put on full display for a new generation of football fans to see. The A-train was a monster on the field and probably the last true FB. Its a shame that stat nerds of today try to judge him as a RB and claim that he was an inefficient and overrated player, when in reality he was the heart and soul of the late 90s and early 2000s Buccaneers. Great video.

This was a great time for the NFL, and the reason that I am a titans fan to this day. I was 12 and Steve McNair and Eddie George were awesome to watch. I still pull out my prized 27 jersey if we make the playoffs.
The games, commercials, and super bowl halftime shows were immensely better than anything we get today and it's sad. Good times.

I'm from Pittsburgh and I remember watching the Steelers win there 5th and 6th Superbowls. One in 2006 & one in 2008. It was such an exciting time to be a Steelers fan! I was 24 yrs old in 2006, it was the Jerome bettis' last year , and Ben roethlisberger's 2nd. Jerome finally got a ring , and Ben became the youngest qb to win a Superbowl? We would win another in two years, and Appear in a 3rd I'm 5 years! It was a great time to be a Young Steelers fan!!!

mike alstott was def built different. now in my mid 30s I respect the hell out of him and everything he did on that field dude was a monster he deserves all his flowers. in my younger years when Tampa was in the central division and one of our rivals I hated that man and how good he was lol. he didn't just strike fear in defenders and coaches he struck fear and broke fans hearts too.

I thought, "No way he's going to get away with that at the next level." Then he goes to the pros and does the same thing, carrying bigger, stronger defenders for 4 yards."

For me 2001-2002 were good times. Always tried to catch sports center on the weeknights. Played a TON of NFL Blitz 2000 on n64. The jerseys were so dope (san Diego power blues and Tennessee Oilers power blues) that's my greatest memories of this era. Also seeing the Dawn of LT and Drew Brees was dope.

he should make one on zach thomas or jake scott, dolphins fan here but both of them are being snubbed by the hall of fame. look at their stats. jake scott was the nastiest fucking player, hard hits and interceptions, averaged like 6 intereceptions a season back in the 70s when quarterbacks rarely threw the ball. he broke his wrist before going to the superbowl during the perfect season, got in the game and broke his other wrist, played through it and got 2 interceptions and is the first safety to ever win superbowl mvp, and the only until 2003 with Dexter Jackson, and won it on that crazy talented 72 dolphins. as for zach thomas he was just an absolute tackle machine, nearly identical stats to Urlacher and is snubbed every year of the hall of fame.

It’s interesting how their were less QBs in their 30’s in 2000, yet in 2020 there’s 10 over 30 and are in their older 30’s. Most sports average age has been getting younger. It would seem that the QB position in the modern NFL has made it possible to play forever if you can keep up your talent
There's 2 reasons for this
1) They rewrote the rule book to protect QB's and pretty much everybody who's not a linebacker
2) The NFL is scripted, more now than ever before

When you started listing fullbacks I was like “wth, where’s THE BEAST? The A train?” but right away you did mentioned Alston and dedicated him quite a big chunk. People today really don’t remember or comprehend how big his name was and how is unfair that The Last Great Fullback is not in the hall of fame.
One of the greatest backfield duo's Warrick Dunn with speed and elusiveness and Mike the A-train alstott with a pulverizing power.

Alstott was my favorite player in his era, but sadly his style of play basically destroyed his neck. People may not like the play changes in recent years but there are reasons for them.

CTE is overrated, over hyped, and is a scam to make games more offensive focused in order to emphasized betting.
Born in 1996. Grew up watching this Era!! The game has evolved, the only thing I miss are the big hits. I love the elite level of passing that developed starting with Texas Tech in early 2000s then went to Oklahoma in 2008 and the NFL started picking it up a year or so later. The spread offense was a college offense for a while but once chip Kelly went to the eagles it really became an offense used at all levels
It's not like elite level passing just magically "evolved" out of college. The spread is only a thing because rules have neutered defenses and their ability to punish receivers first and now QBs and it's a real shame. Makes the game really boring and less physical. Running backs are the only offensive players that can still be punished so offenses simply exploit the rules that advantage the passing game.
As a Bucs fan of almost 25 years, this makes me happy. I miss the days of that HOF D and Alstott and Dunn in the backfield.
I'll take 2000s and early 2010's NFL over today's NFL anyday.

@@George-ll4ev plus the extensive use of multiple running backs per team and every quarterback tends to spread the ball around and not have a favorite receiver.
Football is still life for me but I liked the way the game was played prior to these rule changes and evolution. Fantasy football was way funner too but these changes made it unplayable imo.

I miss two back sets, makes me feel old.
Pretty much any RB from 20 years ago would still be as dominant or even more in today’s pass heavy league.
Alstott will probably see 7 men in the box, lighter linebackers and nickle corners trying to tackle him.
He was a handful then and will probably be a bigger handful today.
But I think he would do serious damage in the passing game as a third down back in the open field

There will never be a player like Mike Alstott, he was a complete player. He had great hands out of the backfield as well as a punishing runner. I got to know the man, and he was very humble and appreciative of his fans.

Even over the last 20 years, the effect of the QB on the game has become much more prominent. The more one player can control the outcome of the game, the less variety we will have in Superbowl QBs.
In recent years we've had Jimmy Garoppolo, Jared Goff and Nick Foles. Teams can still reach the Super Bowl without an elite QB.
I’m SO glad you mentioned jimmy kleinsauser when you talked about the full back. As a lifelong Vikings fan I LOVE jimmy and we’ve spent a long time trying to find a guy to put in the backfield who blocks even remotely like him. When we switched him to TE exclusively his initial replacement was tony Richardson… nuff said….
Also our defense was REALLY bad for a long time. All the way up until we landed the Williams wall and the cowboy. We were just not a very good team in my early years (born in 1994) ☹️
This was the year I really got into football. As a kid in Baltimore I remember how everyone was just raving about our new team was just crushing dudes on defense and I just had to see. My dad and uncle used to use them all the time in Madden too. They just had me glued to the screen it was just so much mayhem to me. I was originally a basketball fan up to that point but I remembered those Ravens games changing me.
That playoff run will forever be cemented in the back of my mind watching with my family. After 5 years of us losing and not making the playoffs each year, all of a sudden it was like damn our offense suck but we can't lose with this defense. I think it was like October where we went an entire month without the offense scoring but our defense and special teams won us 2 of those 5 then before you know it we pretty much never lost again. Our defense allowed only 1 TD in that entire playoff run

So when we won and finally got that parade downtown in the city, It was so awesome to see
From that point I was hooked on football

Which are not well know but are both top three defenses of all time.
Tampa was one of the best however not top 3 . The defense of the 76 Steelers is unreal followed by the 85 Bears and then the 2000 Ravens. Unfortunately the Bucs were basically one year wonders. The Steelers of the 70s and the mid 80s Bears had long runs of dominance especially the Steelers. The Ravens also have had long stretches of dominance. I do agree for one year of dominance Tampa was awesome.
@@cowtzu Ok you are right its almost like Chicago in the 80s .Sometimes it's hard remembering when there is a championship year than a drop off. In 99 that Tampa defense held down the mighty Rams in the nfc title game and then we saw the beginning of what defines a catch ,that burned me up how they screwed Tampa in that game. I sure as would bet if they were from the Boston area it would have been a catch! Yes, I had to go there! Lol.
@@eac1235 Ironic how the Steel Curtain's best year was one where they didn't win the Lombardi, all those injuries though. The best story about that is their horrible start, & Mean Joe(I think) said we're not losing another game this season. They were my introduction to football.

Your video reminds me of what me grandad told me growing up (I was born in 1970).
"Life isn't getting better or worse, it's only changing." And he applied the same mind set about sports but everything else in general (he wasn't a nostalgic person).
The NFL strategies and tendencies has been adjusting along with rules changes & medical studies : CTE, recovery, prevention of injuries, etc. The product is different... But it's still a grueling sport.
I graduated from highschool in 99' and this flooded my memory banks for sho! I don't consider myself as an old man yet lol! But I do remember Brady coming into the NFL and watching all of these great players. Thanks for the great vid!

@@josephconnelly5195 In 2040 positive and negative yardage will be negotiated. The referees would determine where the tackle would occur based on the positioning of the defenders. Defenders grew up without the need to learn tackling. For warmups, players play games of chess on the turf.
I've never been a fan of Tampa but always loved Alstott and Sapp. It would be great to see a couple of guys like Alstott again.

My dad tells me I was blessed being an Eagles fans in the 2000s because when he was growling up it was nothing but utter pain. I grew up watching the insane Jim Johnson (RIP) defense. Brian Dawkins. We were close to becoming a dynasty.
This bought back a ton of memories. I played my first widget season in 99. I watched all these guys. Marshall Faulk was amazing!!!!!! One of my favorite players from that era.
I actually was introduced to football in 2000 by my best friend who was a Giants fan. I'll be a fan forever.
