I am am a professional caulker of 40+ years. I agree with everything you have said. Except one. you should not expect to replace the caulk that often. Do not use any type of latex n wet areas. Contrary to their claims it is a very inferior sealant. And will fail prematurely. As a professional, the only place we use latex is paint prep.If you install silicone correctly,it will physically last for 20-30 years. Will it look good that long? Maybe.Maybe not. But if you use that steamer, you mentioned it should look good for many years. Like you none of my toilets are caulked. I have lived in my house for40 years I have seen quite a few subfloors that rotted out because the leak was not detected. I can’t say for sure that it would have been detected without the sealant but at least there would have been a chance. I have also seen a couple of toilets where the person wanted me to caulk it because it was leaking on the floor. (Of course I didn’t do it and explained why.) Very well done video. Now I have watch your other videos.🙏 By the way I am very harsh when people get caulking wrong. Too many homeowners follow the advice of UA-camrs that have no idea what they are talking about. It can end up costing them thousands of dollars n damages when talking about water infiltration. You seem very knowledgeable .Except the latex thing. But I understand why you would make that choice based on the label.
Omg i didnt know you were a R.N. all the more love to you. I often felt if i also wanted to dive into this construction world. Now i see someone who has done it. ❤❤❤
I've seen toilets that had no caulking around their base and for the reasons you gave, especially the clean look it provides and having one less thing to clean and maintain l choose not to also. Thank you very much.
Excellent video! New sub watching as many of your videos as I can! No pun intended. 🚽 I was taught by GCs to use 2 wax rings for better seal and can avoid caulking if the install is done well. My toilet is set well. I bought a plastic caulk finishing tool. It has 3 sides for different types of caulk line. Since I got that little tool I’ve never touched wet caulk to finish off my caulking projects. Looks just like a cleaning tool for Pampered Chief baking dishes. *I’m on slab house.
Thank you for hoping on the HIP Chicks train. Yes I also have the square caulk tool and yes look just like PC pan scrapers! For more DIY help - check out my newsletter. diyhipchicks.com/newsletter/ Lots more stuff over there!
