I've never seen so many BMW s in one place with no leaks
Larry’s slowing converting to a BMW guy. Come Larry, join the dark side

In 1976 I bought a brand new, Inka Orange, 2002 BMW from Jay Allen Dealership in Medford, Oregon. I believe Brian Hancock sold it to me. I paid $7000 for it. To this very day I can truthfully assert that it was the finest car I have ever driven. I had it for 20 years. Butter smooth with breathtaking acceleration! I used to love driving it fast up Greensprings Highway, just South of Ashland, Oregon. To this very day, I swear by BMW! And I adore Brian Hancock, still a friend of mine today. ❤
So far I'm on my 2nd e36, had 2 e34s and 1 e28. Just come to us Larry. Old bmws is a way of life..and suffering... :D
E28s are very little suffering IMHO, less than the E36 for sure.
@@BMWVX No real suffering on an E36, unless you buy sketchy ones with no maintenance done and 400k on the clock which is unfortunately most of them these days. Taken apart multiple times in the past 25 years by idiots and put back together with zipties and junk off ebay
my family goes back to 1974 3.0 coupe. But the 2002 was itself a growth from the 1600 in the 1960's. Now my 8th BMW is an X7 beast, but surprisingly quick. The E60 N54 power with 6 speed manual was actually quicker than M3's at the time - all we did was the Dinan stg II stuff. We even ate most Porsches with that thing. My favorite of all my BMWs remains the 850CSi, having tweaked as much as we could- almost tossable if you can believe that [$45K later], and yes, you could balance a nickle on the intake manifold and start the engine and rev it and shut down without the nickel moving. PS. a real BMW nerd would be waiting for the Nue Classe and place their order as soon as they are taking orders. Style 8's would like nice on that 528 if the offset works. BMW is not going to share much of the older lines - many of them remain embarrassed by former offerings and they kicked so many of us to the curb protecting Chris Bangle and his butts.
I still think the 2002 may be my absolute favorite BMW from a styling standpoint. It's a classic for a reason. All of the styling is just so charming.
it's a cute little fella
yes, specially the roundel models (1973 and older)
This and a 3.0CSl, fabulous-looking things.

I'm onboard brother. You just feel at one with the car. My first was a 71 back in 73 ,, and about five years ago I bought a fully restored 72 that I love driving and just looking at. Had about 10 or 12 in between.
That beige car is an E3, it is basically the same platform as the E9 coupe. It was a HIGH END luxury car back in the day. All 3.0L cars already had 4 vented(!)disc brakes with proper 4pot calipers up front, It has independent rear suspention.
You didn't see many of them. They were expensive executive cars. A true alternative to a Mercedes W108 280SE.
You could buy a quick sports version named the 3.0Si (200hp) or a stretched version 2.8L and 3.3Li.
These E3 cars are very nice to drive, they feel small, like a 3 series. There was a 2500 (150hp) , 2800 (170hp) , 3.0S (180hp), 3.0Si (200hp) 3.3Li (205hp, only automatics)
I just love that 1800Ti ! These were raced in touring car races in the 1960's. These days you can see them race in the Festival of speed at Goodwood , UK.
Love this collection, especially the e28 M5 and the Bavaria e3. I drive a largely original Euro spec 1983 e28 daily. Really appreciate guys like this keeping these cars on the road in their original spec.
That’s sick, I also drive a largely original Euro spec 1983 e28 ! What do you have ? I have a manual 5 speed 520i
The e28 M5 is 3.5L & 256bhp in American spec. Euro spec is 286bhp. My e28 has the s38b36 drive train out of the e34 M5. 350bhp with a genuine BMW Motorsport chip.
Didn't the E34 first have 315 and later 340 bhp? -at least they did in Europe..
Did you swap the gearbox or still on the 280?
BMW Motorsport chip? Didn't know that was a thing
@@sv_cheats1970 Yes, agree, never heard of that,,,
@@1983dmd well It wasn't unheard of that BMW would do some work for their "special" clients. Take for example the E34 M5 that was oredered by the Sultan of Brunei, the thing had a decent amount of power over stock but was that way from BMW..
E28 M5 has A 3.5 liter straight six, not 3.0 liter
Hearing him say that after seeing all the cars in the shop was definitely triggering lmao
100%
@@Milo-gn5hz That was my “Larry Chen is here nervousness…”😂❤
Not only that, European cars had a re-tuned version of the engine from the BMW M1 (the M88/3) which is a different engine altogether than the M30 that's in the E28 535is.
Chris Harris has a pretty cool video about his love for his e28 m5. Mike from Stanceworks is also e28 fanatic.
My frat brother had a Sahara Beige 530i when we were in college back in 1980👍
I am very fortunate to live here and have his shop service my old M3. Sean is a great guy. Can't recommend his shop enough.
What a stunning collection of bm's👌🏻so great to see someone with such a strong passion to save & get these classics back on the road
Thank you!
Great seeing the Bavaria getting some appreciation - they are quite rare, and here on the west coast you can still see an occasional Bavaria being driven around, though they are usually in rough shape. Replacement parts have got to be a challenge.
You know the history of the Bavaria? Another Max Hoffman special, like the Porsche 256 Spyder. He combined the 2600 sedan engine and leather and all with the 2500 sedan's other parts. Basically a cheaper 2800, which was very expensive.
Had a 3.0 L metallic green then a 3.0 Si Bronze back in the day in the UK. I knew someone who had a red 3.3 lia with white leather interior back in the day too. That was a stunner. Now i am on my 2nd E39(i have two) love my Beamers.
Wow !!! What a great Vid Larry. I’m a VW Audi guy. But to know more about BMW. It was some good Info. Big shout from Pasadena ca 👍🏻🙌🏻👊🏻💪🏼…..✌🏻out.
My dad had a pale blue BMW 2500 saloon (the same body as the Bavaria) with the 4 speed manual. My family of five took a trip from the NW England to Portugal in it and I used to spend hours cleaning it at weekends. He rated it so highly that when it was smashed to bits by a deer leaping in front of it as he was driving 'at pace' he had it rebuilt rather than scrapped. He would let me refuel it because I loved the way the fuel filler was behind the rear license plate!
As a Bimmerhead, this is AWESOME. Thank u, yo. His comment about the wheels being “period” correct is on point. You maintain the styling of the car for that time. So right. Bravo.👍🏽🙌🏽✌🏽
The E12 is one of my faves, the example in this vid looks amazing, sans random yellow headlamp.
i love old bmw its old but gold 🥰😍🤩 thank you
I've owned 5 bavarias. amazing cars.....
Originally from Chicago. My first job at 16 was working at a BMW/VW dealership. I learned how to drive stick on an 88 M5. Drove 635 CSI, 90s 850s, 90s 740s, 90s RX7, Replica AC Shelby Cobra and 67 Stingray convertible. I love older BMWs. My favorite old car is a Lamborghini 400 gt. My first sales job I had Caroll Shelby as my customer and got a tour of his private collection on west coast. Pretty cool. Love cars for sure.
In the late 1960’s, BMW added a tach, front anti sway bar and increased displacement to 2 liters to the 1600 (1602). The 6 cylinder sedans were introduced as 2500 and 2800 models, reflecting their displacement. The Bavaria was a “budget” version. All were amazing machines for the day.
'''Good Choice''', love the deetaled knowledge and insight to the BMW ''Gasoline'' Models Cassics and Modern... So cool the Design and Top quality vehicles that they are. 🎱❤
This was an awesome video. Cool shop, great to learn about these rare classics.
Classic BMWs hold a special place in my car hierarchy.
My dad owned a 1970 BMW 2800 likely identical to that Baveria. We owned it and drove it for almost 20yrs. Same Zenith carbs and 4 speed manual same Sahara colour too. Amazing car. We rebuilt the engine and swapped in 3.0L at some stage too. Actually got my driving license in this car. Ah the memories!!!!!
That was the best car ever your dad’s 2800 first gen without the chrome and the differential lock. IMHO the first M sedan due to superior handling and performance. It handed even better then the E9 CS Coupé due to its ideal wheelbase and other geometric advantages…
My first experience in a BMW was a fellow who raced Mustangs but who also had a 1970 2002.
I was about 15 and dating his daughter. We live near New York City and he drove me into New York City to pick her up at private school one day. Well the way he tossed that thing around those horribly bumpy streets was nearly surreal. The car smooted out everything in sight and we could weave around all those rattly taxicabs and other Detroit Metal without even breathing heavy.
I was hooked.
Since then I've had about 9 2002s and a variety of other Beauty BMWs.
I currently have an almost identical car to his, malaga '72 mine, completely restored to pristine condition including a BMW reman motor and 5spd.
Nothing more enjoyable than jumping in that car.
Exotic car owners at local Cars and Coffee don't get as much attention lol.
But really there's nothing like driving it,, the visibility the feel and the joy of being at one with the car.
Fantastic experience ! Have 1968
1602 project . Down south Africa
Old bmw’s were so simple but had so much soul
I had a BMW E39 M5 breaking traction in 5th on UK motorways, new car back in the day. Love the brand more than any other.
About time the vintage BMW guys get some love!!! Thanks Chen!
I love old BMW's sooo much..... damn
Had a 1976 3.0 Si saloon back in 1980! Swapped it from a 1971 Ford Cortina 1600E because that car couldn't handle the Belgian motorways when I worked for NATO at the SHAPE headquarters back in the day. Lovely car, could do 100 in 3rd gear (4-speed box!). Only problem I had was when it overheated and cracked the head! Got it fixed and went on to do another 40000 miles in it. Just bought my second ever BMW, a 1986 635CSi 1 owner (!) car with 72000 miles on the clock. Loving it to bits. Cheers from a (very chilly) Otford, Kent, UK.
Great content. Techno violet 💜
Had a 74 Bavaria, replaced with carbs with Weber down drafts and fitted the distributor with an Allison electronic points conversion. It ran the best with Champion copper plugs, the Bosch plugs seemed to fall off earlier than the Champions. I used Arco Graphite 20/50 till they stopped making it. I would have loved to see the inside of the engine on a tear down. I had it for 17 years. My license plates, 4FASTLN. It ruled in the 70's.
speaking of sharknoses..I dont see any big coupes - E9s or the first 6 series the E24. I've owned several 6ers and loved them. They were undervalued for the longest time. Surprised he didn't have one
Yeah I was wondering too where there 24s were at, the real sharks
I worked for Bavarian Motor Transport in the early 2000’s. Hauled many a new car out of Jersey City prep center. The last of the cars built in my opinion with quality materials first and priced accordingly. I was fortunate enough to see many show cars at the prep center. Including the E39 M5 from the Guy Richie film as well as the hydrogen E38 7 series. The last BMW I personally owned was a 98 740iL with 72k on it when I purchased the car. I really enjoyed the video. Glad to see Larry’s getting the bug for them
Larry looks so good in this car like damn, with the turned back cap
E28 535is and M5 were 3.5 L. M5 was based on the M1 engine. Great content, as always.
Yeah, the M1 was a 3.0...
yes 3.5L was consider "big" displacement on anything out of Europe back in the 80's. me and all my bud's considered the first Black M5's the German Buick Grand National (3.8L).
S38 E34 M5
M88 E28 M5
don't get why he mixed it
@@patrickneuhaus117 euro E28 M5s had M88, US E28 M5s had the 3.5 S38, also called S38B35.

Wow. I’ve been looking for a shop to get engine work done on my 04 645Ci and these guys are just a couple hours from my house!! Calling tomorrow. 👍🏻
@26:30 yes yes yes. The wheel absolutely can make or break the entire character of a car.
Very interesting bmw’s I never heard of before!
Isn't it interesting that so many folks in the industry have a 2002 ! There are two shops in my area, both owners build race engines among other services, and both fellows drive modded '02s. I've had many over 50 years, currently driving a pristine '72. The other day my neighbors asked me for a ride to the airport. We took the '02! 3 of us & 4 pcs of luggage... all good. Thank you BMW!
Outstanding collection of vintage BMW’s! I remember most of the models in that museum! Lucky guy that still drives these historical pieces!
I remember seeing a Bavaria as a kid back then, it's when I started liking BMW's. And I don't know why but even then a BMW had a certain smell about it when you got in. I have a 99 e36 that still has a certain smell that hasn't faded away. But yeah all the sharknoses of the 70's, I'd like to have one of each.
I love the collection! I bought a 96k mile 1986 535i e28 from the original owner, and I’ve been hooked ever since. My wife just bought an E30 cabriolet. My dream is to take our cars to The Vintage in Asheville, one of the largest vintage BMW gatherings in the country.
That Bavaria is absolutely stunning. That’s one of my dream cars.
As a 17 yr old, I was so fortunate to get to drive regularly my dad’s BMWs back in the day including both his red E3 2500 sedan and his green 1800 sedan. I loved those cars. Moving on forwards, my 2nd wife when I met her had an original 3 series 323i which she later on upgraded to an E36 318is sedan (manual). That was such a good drivers car. My current daily driver now is a E90 323i, however, if the ducks line up one day I would be keen to get a E46 330Ci coupe or convertible as well as a more modern 435 coupe. And all of this comes from someone whose only other cars have been classic Fiats and Alfa Romeos.
Both the 535i and the M5 are 3.5L not 3.0L ..We have had both cars
I shouted 3.5 at my iPad like it mattered. Lol
1000% agree on the wheels making the car!
I learned how to drive a manual car in my Dad's royal blue metallic 1987 BMW 535is. Great car! Hit 141mph on I-15.
Great feature, it is nice to see somebody sharing nice examples who knows about these cars! I grew up riding to soccer practice in my dad's 1976 3.0si and his 1973 2002tii. My dad had an 1988 M5 and M6 as well. Now I'm an e30 guy (325ix stroker turbo, 318is, 318i lemons racecar, and big six swapped euro 325). I think his collection is missing an e24 and/or an e31, but a great representation of some of the classic BMWs and glad to see Larry understanding some of the unique value of the e3s, e9s, and e28s.
my pops was an e30 guy and now i am too.. go figure aha
My dad still has his E12 M535i,2800cs and i have an E30 325i and X5..Dad had the E28 M5 and M745i
Love the beemers
@@danlaw1007 If I win the lottery, one of my first purchases would be a genuine E28 M5.
Ted from Colorado? This is Marco with the E24 that didn't pull the trigger on those Euro bumpers while they were still affordable a few years back. Been a while. Small world!
Love this video, thank you. I've owned a 2007 328i automatic (E90) for a few years. its my first bmw and I absolutely love it. The handling is like nothing I've ever known and taking it to redline in sport mode keeps me awake at night. lol. there we go, I've started my own collection, phhht.
THIS is what I stay up late to watch. Old BMWs > almost anything else on the road.
What a beautiful car collection and the owner is a good story teller.
Those 5 series!!!
Thanks Larry for this BMW deep interest, I learned to drive on a 1970 2002ti Bavaria in Jamaica 🇯🇲 in 1974, beautiful cars, today I drive a 2008 528xi, here in Canada I wish there were a place where classic BMW owners could meet nice work man
Start it ..... regret I'm in South Africa.
I owned BMWs in the 70s when most people didnt even know what they were My 72 2002tii in Inka was a pure joy
@LarryChen - you should come to Vancouver, tons of classic BMW’s up here!
I drive an E46 cabrio, manual swapped and engine swapped. I just did another m54 because it was so good. Like changing a 500 lb lightbulb. I am a through and through bimmer guy. It's my beamyweamer. I want to start buying the bmws that go at the impound auctions because I've been told the cost of getting the keys going again prevents people from bidding. Anyway the collection is awesome! Thanks for sharing!
you have to take out that e28 on the road to experience it. my dad had one when i was a kid and i have a bunch of memories of that car being so cool and fast
17:58 is so important in concept not just for cars but for EVERY industry. I stan the older BMWs (current daily driver is an E46) and love design language talk. Understanding the evolution gives an appreciation for some the "lines" that are shared from the past to the modern as well. I agree Porsche seems to grasp this concept a bit more.
Really enjoyed this video, huge fan of this era of BMW. The Bavaria is definitely on my bucket list.
Loved this video! Nice seeing some of the rarer Bimmers being represented. That Bavaria tho!
Back in 1977 i was a police officer in the UK and we used to have the E3 as police cars to chase villians in.They were 2800cc manual in the main, though possibly some 3000s about.Lovely car to drive and are indeed buttery smooth. Those were the days 😎🤣
BMW, back in the day, commissioned Italian designer Michelotti to pen their cars. You’ll be surprised to see other makes that had similar styling. Like the Hino Contessa, and various Triumph models to name two companies. The Contessa, in particular, had a front end that was inspired by the Chevrolet Corsair. While the rest of the body has similar BMW lines. Hino was bought out by Toyota, and the name was kept for their truck division til today.
I miss my 85 BMW 535i 5 speed which I owned for a long time. It had over 300K miles on it when I sold it. The old bmw's were very special cars, very solid and reliable, the new ones are plastic junk.
I have 2 e28 535i and 1 535is 5spd and i adore them. Incredibly smooth and fun to drive. Absolutely brilliant cars. I also have 2 of bmw’s very first “motorsport” engines which was in e12 M535i (M90b35, M30b35LE) which was used as a test engine before production of the M1 which had an m88 dohc engine, which later became the s38 in the e24 M6 and e28 M5. They share the same block. The S38 in e28 was 3.5L not 3.0l. Out of the 1300 units send to north america 30 M5’s in the usa were black with black leather interior. Yes im a nerd ik. I just adore e28s
Me too, love my E28!
Euro M5 and M635CSi and the SA only 745i had the M88/3 engine. S38 engines were in NA M5 and M6 cars. The M1 had the M88 engine. Procar Gr 4 had the M88/1. Gr5 had the M88/2 Turbo
I spent a good portion of my childhood on the backseat of an Alpine white on blue velour 2500 E3 Bavaria. You may now imagine the goosebumps I'm having.
nice my first car was a 1973 e3 bavaria. 4 speed manual. Ferrari red, had it 21 years and drove it to college. Good times.
You are soooo right !!!I own a 1985 BMW M635CSi and 99% of BMW drivers on the road don't even notice my car and don't have the faintest idea of what it is !!! And don't forget that it would be a bad idea to let the new BMW owners get informed about our older models....They would realize the poor quality of their new cars!!!!
BTW, the e28 M5 has a 3.5L engine....I am surprised you don't know that !!!
Cool jet
I owned an E3 2000 CS in that beige, the couple 2 litre that has the first of what became the 2002 motor. Fabulous car
A 1972 BMW Bavaria was my very first Bimmer; here it is 2023 and I haven't been without a Bimmer since. Loved that car; sometimes I wish I'd have kept it and invested the money for a complete restoration. It was mint, just like the one in this video. Purchased in 1993 with only 80k gently-driven miles. A real looker in burgundy.
Excellent video thank you
BMW son los mejores autos desde siempre. su CONDUCCION lo es TODO.
BMWs are simply awesome! Fantastic collection mate!! I drive a 22 year old E46 328i still in mint condition & have no plans to sell it and looking for another older BMW, maybe a 80’s Sharknose 635 CSI!
Mercedes and BMW were king in the 70's and 80's! No other car could compete with their quality!
As an Australian, I am always shocked when I see videos of people in the US driving without plates. We would get ripped to shreds here if we drove around without plates 😅
In the state of Florida, the front plate is not required. Only the rear plate.
Depends on the state you live in, in virginia, front and rear are required, but in North Carolina just a rear is
i just got a 2002 almoste exactly like that one. cant wait to get it running
My daily in high school was an 86 528e. It was burgundy with the black leatherette interior. The only thing that I hated was it was an automatic. I’ve been looking for a 5 series of that vintage since I regrettably sold that one. Once I finish my VW restomod, I will find an e28 to be a fun daily
Nice!!
Love the old BMWs. Would love to own one but I never see that happening. Such awesome cars. BMW needs to revert back on these a I’m serious
Come to The Vintage in Hot Springs, NC this May! Lots and lots of Vintage bmws like these and more that you can see!
Very cool video. As far as 5 series, finding a nice e28 is not easy, but finding a nice e12 is extremely difficult. I agree the e28 is where it’s at as far as M5s go.
Don't agree...The Alpina B7 Turbo e28 is the Holy Grail of e28....
I really missed my e21 IS. It was 10yo by the time I cared for it. It had 15” deep dish gold face with silver lip BBS RA.
Loved this video
Yo how did that man just say the M5 S38 is a 3.0 liter... its an S38B35, a 3.5L c'mon man.
The E3 is BMWs best!! I haven't seen a bad looking one yet from the factory. All colours seem to suit it. Mine is Kyle blue with tan interior. Great example you're driving here.
Alpina B7 E28 (330HP) was the fastest sedan in the world back then, M5 was just behind (286HP euro, 256 US). BTW, in 1988, it's a M88, 3.5L 24v stock. The S36, 3.6L came in the E34 (315HP), followed by the S38 in the E34 Evo (340HP).
I’m 57 and in the 80 s I work at Auto Baum FT Worth TX ,iv had 81 320 4sp stick Black camel interior, gold BBS , Folda tires spoilers, then I jump up to a 91 325 Convertible Red/tan interior auto,Black top and black wheels, tent, spoilers ,Hot!,now at 57 I own a 2000 750 IL Titanium Silver/Black leather, The Ultimate Driving Machine Leonard DFW TX
My first car 2002 back in 96 still my favorite!wish I still had!
Boxy 4 doors never to forget. First BMW was a wine 1966 2000 ti Lux. Next the schwarz '88 M5. Back then few realized what unassuming high roofed sedan would honk over many sports cars and American slugs.
My first BMW was a 88 535IS same color combo, that was an amazing car.
I love that you said it's a placed to get your BMW "souped up"
e28 m5 is the best m car ever made, wish the prices didnt go nuts the minuet I started making some money in life.
Dude is so cool with his BMW collection!
One of my favorite short stories is one by Rhall Dahl titled The Fingersmith. In it, a guy had just bought the finest and fastest new BMW available and to show it off he picks up a hitchhiker so he can brag about it. In conversation the hitchhiker tells him that he's a "Fingersmith." and explains that goldsmiths work with gold, silversmiths with silver and of course a fingersmith works with his fingers. The driver says what the hell does that mean? And the fingersmith hands him his belt as explanation. Conversation quickly goes back to this amazing new car and how fast it can go, which obviously needed a demonstration which resulted in getting pulled over and being ticketed. The driver is beside himself and crying over his ticket which, for reasons that I can't remember is a total disaster. But the fingersmith consoles him and calms him down and then hands him the police officer's ticket book.
Great story ... Will check it out
last years of carburetted cars at BMW was 1988/89 on the 316 phase 2 E30 base model, not "i".
There actually existed carburated E30 318i's, very early M10 engined examples
@36 min BMW had carb cars at least till the E21 like the 320 in 1981 with the great 4A1 Solex. It was made for cars from 2.0 till more then 6.0 liters!! Even just on V8's !
that bavaria sounds wild. so cool
