Mr. Clemens must have been turning over in his grave when his beloved and elegant mansion became a homeless shelter. He left the estate to three of his children on his last will and testament. What happened to the other nine?
@@rrich52806 Oddly I was up that way yesterday looking for Crown Candy. I thought I would cruise around a little to check it out, see the old streets and houses, along with the water towers. I don't know much about the current state of the N. Side, not having been up that way since the GM plant closed, but do know it's glorious history....you can see it in all the beautiful, old crumbling churches that dot most corners up there. It was shocking, depressing, and frankly made me a little angry that the residents of that community allowed this to happen. Oh well.
This is sad. So many once beautiful homes in our city that need restoring. Like this is starting to become a public issue bcuz St Louis is known for our beautiful brick homes, we cannot tear them down & put up those cheap homes with the siding bcuz after years go by, it WILL take away from the look & feel of the city...

Ive recently been looking at google maps street views and its amazing how you can scroll down a neighborhood full of homes (mostly abandoned) and then the next frame its all just empty fields (going from an older photographed street to a more recently photographed street). It blows my mind! that sort of thing just doesnt happen where I live.

The Water Towers, Holy Trinity, Bissell, and these two (what's the other one?), plus check out some side streets for old coolness. I knew about this house, but didn't know it was totally gone. Sad, but the no sadder than the rest of the area.
@@rrich52806 Not to mention something this would even not register over there. Charles Dickenson's house, sure...his uncle's 150yr house, not so much. There are a couple of Sam's old places that are open for business.
They mention the McKee Group or something in this video. The head guy “was” buying HUNDREDS of the North City homes and had something like 150-200 million set aside to revitalize the area. Word got out and then people wanted 100-150k for a house that was 2-3 years behind on taxes + not worthy of $5000 or livable. Group tried eminent domain route and city shot him down. Something like that. Just crazy.
@@314jrock not enough “home” development at all. All the contractors have given up because house will get wires yanked out the night of the day they were put in. PEX plumbing pipes helped a little being NOT copper. One guy I know had 15 houses lined up bank wise. Did exterior and windows first. Purposely left wiring until almost last. After 2nd day of plumbers being there, house was broken into and they were “upset” there wasn’t any copper so they busted EVERY new window. Happened TWICE and contractor pulled out, gave bank back their money and ate 20k loss.
@@314jrock thanks, me too because I need the work. Really sad part is this guy had best intentions to “make homes” for people and provide a BUNCH of employment too. Yeah, he was going to make some money as well of course. It was a true “win win” for everyone involved. He even hired couple neighborhood “old timers” to just pick up trash around the houses. Nice old guys that just sat around and told “lies” (having fun!) and we’re happy to pick up stuff 2-4 hours a day for $60-$70 cash. Man did they have some stories and were funny! They were visibly upset after seeing what happened in their own neighborhood. Like somebody blew out the last candle on their cake.

It was his cotton on the docks of New Orleans that served as a barricade for the Americans in the Battle of New Orleans, War of 1812. I teased a colleague from Louisiana about all those fancy wrought iron balconies that you are going on about were made in St. Louis and shipped south, because that is true.
