We are sailing on the Sun Princess in September from Southampton and are spending 3 nights in London with a package that Princess offered. They will meet us when we arrive and transfer us to the hotel in London, stay 3 nights, and will transfer us to the ship in Southampton. Had a choice of 3 hotels. We did this in Montreal last year and the transfer to ship in Quebec city. We feel the convenience was worth it.

Please do not buy an Oyster Card they charge you for the card around 5 pounds. You can use your debit card or which ever Credit card you have and just tap it on the turnstile when you go to you train and when you get off the train you tap again. There is a maximum cost for the day around 8-10 pounds, you can do this on the buses too our Visa would not work so we used our debit card. We are from Canada and did this for a 3 day stay in London last November, it was much more cost effective and way easier. We are originally from London. Hope this helps.

Hi Alison and Gordon, the cheapest way is to take the Tube. You are on the Piccadilly Line. Yes, it takes around 45 minutes, but the line will take to a lot of main sites. We now take the tube every time we visit London 1-2 times a year. Good show, BTW.

I'm traveling with five friends on the Regal Princess beginning September 24 for the 33-day British Isles tour that continues to a transatlantic cruise that ends in Galveston, Texas USA. We did the transpacific last fall from Los Angeles to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Great video Allison. We are staying at the Rubens for 4 days before our cruise in July - certainly not inexpensive, BUT, it's very close to all the things we want to see, so I appreciated the part about travel time and expense

A fabulous way to go into London ...coming from Heathrow....take a taxi to Hampton court palace for a visit ( depends on the time you get in) and there is a thames river boat that leaves from Hampton court in the afternoon and goes all the way into London ...under all the bridges! It takes 3 hours but is fabulous because you go through the locks and get to see the river widen! You can get off at westminster pier and you're there! I did this in 2009 ...my first trip to london...per rick steves and the first time I brought my daughter along and another time with a friend. It is the best with jet lag because its so peaceful and not crowded and you can take it alll in on the river!

One thing you might want to share with your viewers is that if they skip Princess Transfers, which are at least double other public transport options, it will help pay for that better located hotel. I’m glad you found a solution that worked for you.

We recently disembarked in South Hampton, stayed a night at the Holiday inn South Hampton ($89) then got a taxi to the train station for 5lb, Then we took the train (16 lb each) to London (Victoria Station), then got a taxi (35 lb) to our hotel in Surrey Quays. Our hotel was quite reasonable for 5 nights it was $600. But, because we really didn't understand the size of London we weren't near the tube and buses were more than a mile away. But, we seriously lucked out. The Uber boats were only a quarter mile away and were hop on hop off. For 22 lb each we could ride for 24 hours and it took us up and down the Thames and to most of the attractions very close to the stops. Occasionally one of the big things would be a mile away but the scenery was fantastic. The boat had heat and a/c, was very nice and even served beverages and snacks for a reasonable price. You went under all the bridges and we got some spectacular photos while riding. No matter where you stay, a river ride is great

Speaking of chase travel insurance, we had a flight problem out of Houston recently. The card insurance is mostly useless. They demand documentation you can never really find, hoops and more hoops, give you wrong info,on and on. I will be buying travel insurance next not relying on chase. Generally speaking 40,000 points is worth about $400 IMO

Hearing you mention places in London makes me want to go there again. We have always stayed near Victoria Station, once at a Premier Inn and once at a Best Western. We used the tube to get from Heathrow to Victoria Station, but we travel light, carry on only. I hope you have an absolutely wonderful trip and enjoy London.

    Another option.
Recommend from LHR Terminal 5. Use T5 using machine available to get an Oyster Card. Located inside, next to passenger arrivals. You can reload as needed and keep the Oyster card for return to London in the future. You simply load $$ as needed. We typically load $40 each. The leftover funds stay on the card for future trips!
Our cards are over 4 yrs old!
We also stay at the Sofitel hotel T5. Short walk from T5.
T5 has easy access to buses (we went direct to Oxford), underground, Paddington Express, and Elizabeth line.
The Oyster card we use for the underground and is cheaper than the Paddington Express and the new Elizabeth line. You can use the same Oyster card to go on a regular bus in London to.
We recently experienced being able to leave our luggage at the Sofitel, taking only a small case for traveling to other destinations. EG Oxford, Cambridge, etc. They charged us $45 to store our luggage. We were coming back to the hotel in order to catch the bus to Southampton 5 days later.

Last year I stayed at a hotel near Heathrow and the hotel staff were able to advise on the quickest cheapest way to get to Hertz for my rental car pick up, which was by bus.
Word of warning regards dropping off cars at Hertz - they look for any tiny mark or scratch to attempt to bill you extra at the end of the rental. Take plenty of photos as evidence before driving off.
There are buses from most rental car places for a free ride back to the airport.

We like to take the National Express from Heathrow to Victoria Station and book a hotel within walking distance. We stayed at the Hotel Belgrave which was very nice and had breakfast for a small fee. From there we can take the tube or walk to the sights in central London. On cruise day , we walk back to Victoria Station and get our rebooked ride on the National Express to Southampton.

We just did a Transatlantic on the Carribean Princess and used the CityMapper app in London and Paris after the cruise. Works great and gives you all the bus or train stops from location to location, travel time/ delays and the time/cost for taxi or Uber. We used the train or taxis the most depending on the travel time or cost and it saved so much time.

We are flying into London next Tuesday & are staying two nights before our Norway cruise. We will take Heathrow Express and we bought our 1-way tickets in advance on-line and saved 10 pounds per ticket. Our hotel is a 5 minute walk from Paddington Station and is walkable to many of the sites. There is a tube station really close as well. This will be my second time in London (first time 10 years ago). The area around Paddington Station has some lovely accommodations in several price ranges.

So much cheaper, and not any more time, I’d say, to just take the tube. We always do this. Stay near Earls court. Walk right onto the Piccadilly line and off again at Earls court. Maybe 40 min? And a few pounds at most (depends on time of day), can just tap on and off with a card AND there is a super reasonable cap on your fares for the day!

Taking a British Isles cruise on Princess Caribbean, then 10 days in London (Regents Park - close to the places I want to visit), then doing the Transatlantic on Princess Sun. Those cruise transfers to and from Victoria Coach Station are a bargain. Did you get an oyster card for your trip?
