Well done, and thanks for the shout out! Ya, most network printers support the JetDirect protocol which is a TCP/IP protocol on port 9100. From there as you found, it's a bit of trial and error to find a driver that works. Most printers support HP PCL5. I definitely enjoy seeing old tech working with new tech!!
You can get it working with Windows 3.1. Actually surprised the printer worked with a Color LaserJet 5 driver as that printer doesn't support PCL5c. The spec sheet says it only supports PCL3GUI, which later HP inkjets all support nowadays. An alternative option is to use that RPi sitting next to the printer as a CUPS server. It can share the printer over Samba and emulate a standard Postscript printer which Windows 3.1 and even various DOS programs can print to.
Oh! Just caught your comment about Windows 3.1x. Definitely an option :-) Since there is some interest, I just released a video showcasing how that is done! And we must have been on the same page, because my video also covers making greeting cards!
I have an Epson Expression Premium XP-8600 photo printer, I should give this a try sometime. The only way I did it before was by having a portable HP printer from 2005 that was compatible from 95 all the way to Windows 10 hooked up to my file server, shared out using CUPS in a Linux VM. It worked great but not having to run an old printer all the time would be nice! It already works with my Macs using older drivers for Epson printers from what I remember (and it has official support for even MacOS Lion which my Late 2006 iMac runs), so :P
Very nice. Where did you get the HP Port Monitor Application? I have searched high and low, cannot find it anywhere on the Internet. Ingvar Nilsen, Norway
This is a very weird combination. If I were to print on Windows 95 in 2020, I would rather use a vintage printer just to be more era appropriate. But hey, keep up the good work!
I would love to find a Lexmark WinWriter 150c, the printer that came with my original Legend 822CDT, but those are quite impossible to find nowadays. Also have my LaserJet 5p connected to it.
@@RetroTechChris Ah... I got it, but I usually print them wirelessly (especially on my Windows XP desktop) and messing around with Windows 95 VM, but it didn't work as I hoped. Any idea?
@@Nanandmic567Official I see. My Samsung ML-1865W is wireless. If it supports JetDirect via port 9100, you can use this method. For VMs, I usually bridge directly to the network card to get an IP address on the "main" network.
That time Hot Wheels tried to do for boys what the early Barbie software did for girls. Printing software has kind of become a lost art with so many capable programs available for free.

5th like
correct. I used the HP Color LaserJet 5/5m PS driver to print to Ricoh Color Copiers - Works w/o a hitch on 98SE using HP Port Monitor.

I did everything you did in the video and it worked with a canon imageclass d570! It's the little things that put a smile on your face once in awhile.

@@RetroTechChris Might have to record a follow-up video later where I try that. :-)
I didn’t know you got married congratulations dude!!
Nice work! I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer.
For Windows 3.1, you might need a third party driver, like Printfil. That's how I get Windows 3.1 to print to PDF through DOSBox.

Looks good, might try it out on mine’s sometime.
Thank you so much!! I can finally print from Greetings Workshop from my Win 98 machine on my new printer!!!

0:50 Is your Packard Bell Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse of your Packard Bell Legend 822CDT yellowed?
The monitor is very mildly yellowed, but it looks more yellow because of the camera.
@@TheNostalgiaMall Are you gonna to also turning back to white like it's brand new.
Nice video i might try this with my Toshiba satellite 330CDS laptop with windows 98 first edition
Upgrade to Windows 98 SE
It’s been a year your driving licence needs renewing about 6 days ago
Where can I find these Drivers? I have the same HP Printer...
Cool
Heck...
This is goodddd~
By the way, Can this work with others? (Mine have Canon Pixma MX416) but ...
Nice video anyways.
Try it. :-)
Quite possibly yes. I think the Canon Pixma uses PCL5, so assuming it is a network printer, you should be all set!

The toners of this printer is more expensive than this PC.
Geez that’s so crazy man.
i tried doing this and it did connect to my HP Office Jet 3830 but it started and immediately ended does anyone know how to fix this?
I didn't know you can do that
this is awesome
Good job buddy
The Nostalgia Mall Have you ever tried programming?
Some other modern printers can work with Windows 98 and other windows such as Windows 10
Yep
