Unit 1 Aura Smart Bike Helmet Review: Is it worth $210?!

- The Unit 1 Aura Smart Bike Helmet promised to set the bar high for what a class 3 e-bike helmet with NTA 8776 rating could look like with integrated lights, removable visors, and crash detection.
After my initial frustrations with the button not working, did this smart bike helmet live up to the Kickstarter hype? I hope this review helps you decide if this is the helmet for you.

MY DISCLAIMERS:
I did purchase this helmet on Kickstarter. I'm not paid or bribed for reviews. Additionally, some links are to affiliate advertising, which may earn me a few pennies from your purchase. - Авто та транспорт
What do you think of the Unit 1 Aura and NTA 8776 helmets?
Hello, thank you so much for your review! As the co-founder & Co-CEO of the brand, I confirm that we are expanding our CX team, but the overall satisfaction with the quality of our products is high. The main issue has been delays with Kickstarter, which I fully acknowledge, and I'd say that the AURA project was somewhat overwhelming, though we are now at 99% fulfillment. However, this is not due to the product itself, as the quality of the product is unquestionable. We understand that we need to improve our response speed; we have experienced an unusually high level of inquiries due to Kickstarter deliveries over the last four months. One last comment: It would be fair and accurate in the comparison to mention that the Lumos e-bike helmet is only certified for e-bikes in the Medium size. This means that if you are a size Large or Small, you wouldn’t have the option to purchase that helmet. Again, thank you very much for your review.
Thank you so much for chiming in. It is wonderful to hear your investment. Absolutely love them helmet.
Interesting fact about the Lumos e-bike helmet. I’ll do some research as I’m going to do a lumos vs unit 1 video soon!
Personally don’t need audible indicators. A speaker would likely add unnecessary expense and weight anyway. You can program the indicators so that they flash for 5, 10 second intervals or permanent until you click again to turn them off. And the remote flashes with them so very easy to see at a glance. I’ve had the helmet almost 2 months now and my only issue has been wearing the magnetic visors with my metal frame glasses which keep getting raised and attached to the visor. Other than that the helmet has been perfect.
The indicator change is an update, which is a nice one!
A speaker that just beeps would add a few cents and like a gram of weight - I don't think either of those are an issue.
Great review. I would like my head lit up. At the same time, for $240, they better have some excellent colors, have a visor, be a generally good bike helmet, occasionally fold my laundry, and have a large size helmet if they hope it will fit on my head. I hope the folks at Aura are very successful, I wish them the best.
Great review 😊 Could you do a test of the lights on the helmet when it’s dark. For me that’s a very important part and it’s impossible to gauge from tech. specs. how visible the lights really are.
Hi! Remember there is a Manual mode for Turn Signals, where they will keep going until you press the Remote again 🙌
Thank you!! Apparently that is an update. When I talked with them a few weeks ago that wasn’t available yet 🙌
@@CargoBikeLifecomIt’s ‘a little buried’, but I’ve had it on my FARO for a year now: you do need to create a custom preset though. Once in there, the option is visible.

Yeah, if you do a video about their app it would be great if you can figure out how it works and share that 😅
I pretty much click around at random until I get it to do what I want
The UI isn’t clear at all and I can’t remember how to do anything I do more than once
How to get to the custom profiles?
Where you can change the brightness, and patterns for the helmet and other lights?
And the patterns and length for the turn signal unit?
It’s not very easy at all and the app could really use improvement, and then some good instructions
I got the Aura as part of the Kickstarter. I got the full package. I love this helmet. I highly recommend it. My only wish is that one could decrease the lumens of the helmet lights (and there were fun color choices). I also wanted to use it for road riding, but the brightness annoys the cyclists behind. But it's super safe. I use both the Faro and the Aura for my commuting. The visors for cold night riding =💯! Good review.
I find the app very difficult to find my way around. But when I can figure it out I have seen how to change the light level on new custom presets
But I wish there was a way to change between presets without using the app. I don’t think you can change the lighting without opening up your phone
I'm looking for a replacement for my Abus Pedelec 2.0 as it already five years old. What I like about this helmet is the brim. It longer than my current helmet and shade from the sun is nice. This could be a good summer helmet.
I would not have given this helmet a second look, but I value your opinion, so I looked. It is actually pretty cool, like what a Storm Trooper would wear to ride a bicycle. I don't need the connectivity junk which is making the price higher, but I do like a lot of the other features.
I’m just about to order my new e-bike and I’m reviewing smart helmets. Your videos are soooo helpful and I’m enjoying your content!!! Thank you!🙏 You are my favourite UA-cam channel!
I wondered if you might be drawing up a comparative database on the various smart helmet options that you are testing which you might share with us (like your excellent cargo bike database). I am keen to only buy MIPS compliant but I’m finding that many countries which don’t require riders to wear helmets don’t say either way. Also, it’d be invaluable if you were able to assess the tech differences between the options. At the moment I’m tossing up between the Unit 1 aura and the Lumos e-bike smart helmet ie both options have MIPS, integrated light&signalling systems and some communication/ iPhone links. As well as these features I’m also interested in integrated camera (for dash cam) and listening to podcasts without compromising my awareness of my surroundings.
Thanks for the comments! Are you thinking this database would live on bikeshopgirl.com, cargobikelife.com or a different website all together?
Here is the criteria that matters to me, let me know what you think:
Price
Weight
MIPS
Sizes covered by NTA 8776
Lights
App integration
Extra features
For you, I would suggest the Unit 1 and a pair of Jawbone headphones :)
@@CargoBikeLifecomI like your pros and cons. You should include the database on both of your websites in case they have different audiences and I think it would be useful to link from each helmet data section to your review article +video. Also I found your “what’s in the box” discussion v useful since the info on the supplier websites often doesn’t make it clear. For example it was only via your video that I discovered the Unit 1 remote is supplied rather than needing to be sourced separately! So that would be useful to capture in the database.
I did not like your first review, but this one is much better. 😅
Also good to know that only 2 lights can be paired with one helmet, cause I couldn't find that information and I haven't tried even if I have access to 2 pairs of lights.
Overall the helmet and lights are amazing. Quality is on point and I for one did not have trouble with support. Sofia was more than helpful.
I now hope that they bring something even better than this. (Not the new one though, but better than the Aura) 😅
BTW, you look very cool on that Bakfeit. Just had to be said.
You are so right about eye protection! I frequently hit bugs which go in my eyes at speed if I'm not carefully wearing eye protection which could damage my eyes and cause me to crash!
I just bought a pack of USB C-type Anti Loss Dust Plugs on Amazon to hopefully make the USB C port more weatherproof.
I've had my aura helmet for a few weeks, ordered with a bunch of lights. I mainly bought it for the magnetic accessories and the light system. I like that the lights come with a charger similar to wireless earbuds. My least favourite thing about it is the comfort: I've owned a couple of road bike helmets in the 80-100 USD range, and their retention strap is superior to the aura.
Thanks. For comparison you missed very nice helmet Giro Ethos. Try it. You will like it.
Thanks for the comment. I’m not seeing that it is NTA 8776
Im looking for a new helmet, thanks for the review!
Awesome. Any specific requirements?
Like many bike turn signals they just don't seem that obvious and the cadence at which they "blink" isn't fast enough. I don't understand why it's so hard to get right when they can just look at how cars do them. At least they can always update that later...
The missed out the chance to put the shades rim on the back to look like an aero add on when not in use
I was surprised there is no storage on the helmet for them!
I have an oval shaped head that’s 59cm round, but narrow, 21cm front to back
Tried both a Medium and Large size of this helmet. The Medium was too tight. But the Large is quite wobbly side to side
It’s wearable with the fit cranked in, but has lots of room side to side
I could get foam to pad the sides, but that might ruin the ventilation
Not sure if I’ll keep the helmet or not
I like the lights, though I’m not convinced the turn signals will get drivers attention
I worry the helmet may give riders a false sense of security
It’s important to know drivers still won’t see you
I’ve already had drivers not see the signals. So keep an eye out
I looked them up. The good news is that they are now down to $209.00! Bad news is that they are out of medium and large. Sigh.
@@hemaccabe4292 ooh, that’s only good news if you didn’t already fork out a small forrtune for the kickstarter price that was apparently 40% discounted 😡
