Excellent as usual. Of course, I will have to add (naturally), that you can use Emacs keybinds by default anywhere in MacOS. This has always been the case and speaks to the Unix origins of MacOS. Emacs keybindings are very easy to learn. They also work on an iPad if you have a keyboard attached. I just figured I’d throw that out there for those who might want to explore a few more options. These are some of the keybindings that Gary shows at the end of the video. 😃 Tip: Many of us Mac Emacs users change our Caps Lock key to be the Control key, so Emacs keybindings are even easier and faster to use.
This is good to know. It’s been many years (decades maybe) since I’ve used Emacs but I wonder how much of the key bindings are committed to muscle memory!
@@davep6603 Yeah. It’s still completely valid in MacOS and even iPadOS. Try C-n C-p C-a etc in Notes or even a Safari text field.
Unfortunately I was a vi person, starting in the 70s. Emacs vs vi was a famous cultural war at Bell Labs. Sadly I still remember how to use vi. I even used vi when I was a department head at the labs :)
@@pedropuckerstein4670 Wow you were there at the start! That’s fantastic. And I do love vi as well. Emacs is my go-to for everything but vi is beautiful too just for editing. Of course, I can run Emacs in Evil mode if I want to. 👍 I also run Vimium in Safari which uses vim keys for navigation.
That’s nifty! I default to shell keyboard shortcuts from Linux/UNIX and get a little frustrated when it doesn’t work everywhere.
Thanks for sharing.
Another great video, Gary. I really appreciated the list of commands at 7:37 conveniently presented “in order of increasing strangeness” 😊
A very useful and informative video tutorial today! Thank you, Gary! 👏🏻❤️
You have a good purpose in life, Gary. Helping me! lol! I love it when you show simple stuff that will get used forever! I never INVEST the time to look around, anymore. I only have time to waste, apparently. sigh! Keep it up, eh?!
Thanks, Gary - very useful!
Excellent! Gonna have to watch it a few times to memorize.
Very cool! More interesting than today's update. Thanks.
Very useful tips. Many thanks!
Thanks very much, Gary, for this informative video! These are very helpful shortcuts.
One thing that stumped me after moving to windows is tabbing multiple lines of text.
To do that type
(CMD) + ]
or
(CMD) + [
Thanks bunches
Perfect, thank you Gary! I would like to give you an idea for future video. I' d really love to see some useful terminal commands, to do things that you cannot do directly through macos (for example caffeinate, networkquality -s, how to change the default file type of a screenshot, etc)
I did one on networkquality here: ua-cam.com/video/rCvnumWI93w/v-deo.html
I also covered screenshot format, but not on UA-cam (Patreon). Instead of caffeinate, change your sleep settings if you really need it. Most of the time people think they need caffeinate (or an app that does it) they don't realize that whatever they are trying to do will work even if you let the display sleep.
My favourite is Command Q(uit)
Thank you so much!😍🙏
Thanks
Could you do a video on QMX/via for the those of us that have a programmable keyboard? Thank you, Gary.
Sorry, I don't use VIA or a QMX mechanical keyboard so I can't help with that.
Thanks for covering this topic! I had requested or suggested it a while back because coming from PC and used to using the home and end keys to do CMD+➡︎︎and CMD+⬅︎ respectively. I can't seem to be able to map those keys to have those functions for Mac apps although it does work in cross platform apps. It's just more convenient to have a single key solution to do that. Any ideas?
On a Mac, Home is FN+left arrow and FN+right arrow.
@@macmost How do I map the "home" and "end" keys to do it so I don't have over-exert myself and risk serious injury or death by having to use two keys simultaneously?
@@TheKingOfInappropriateComments One option is to get the Apple full-sized keyboard as that has Home and End keys. Another option is to remap something else like maybe an F-key to it with Keyboard Maestro or maybe Karabiner.
@@macmost i have the full size apple keyboard but the home and end keys do different behaviors
@@TheKingOfInappropriateComments Sorry, I don't understand. The Home does something different than Home? Well, either way Karabiner is a good option for rewiring keys as you want.
HI I have an important question how do you change edit the mouse key from "I" to "fn" button to left click I watched your video from year thank you
Not sure what you mean. Using the accessibility feature Mouse Keys? You can't customize that. See support.apple.com/en-me/guide/mac-help/mh27469/mac
@@macmost Using the mouse keys since its stuck on I I was hoping to reasign it into a different letter
Makes one miss vim.
