Role Model, born Tucker Pillsbury, is an American singer-songwriter celebrated for his blend of indie pop, alternative R&B, and hip-hop. Hailing from Portland, Maine, he made waves with his debut EP "Arizona in the Summer" in 2017, followed by the breakout single "minimal" in 2018. Role Model’s debut album “Rx” was released in 2022 to critical acclaim. In the time since, Role Model has gone through a very public relationship and breakup. His follow-up project, “Kansas Anymore” is slated for release in late 2024 and details the intricacies of a deteriorating relationship. Today on the couch, Role Model discussed kicking off this new era with the single “Oh, Gemini,” the process of writing “Kansas Anymore,” and life as an LA-based singer/songwriter.

I genuinely have never seen an interview where the person cannot form what they’re feeling in a sentence… and it also blows my mind that he is very expressive in any of his albums but when it comes to actually speaking in person, he cannot get it out
that's kind of the point of making music sis. most artists are troubled when expressing their feelings unless it's through the medium of their art. That's what drove them to make art in the first place. the feelings you're used to hearing artists express in their interviews are rehearsed and written down before they do the interview usually. they have PR teams dedicated to helping them do that. that's why people love Zach Sang, he really is good at getting the honest person to shine through past all the PR training.
(btw nothing wrong with PR training, when you're putting yourself Infront of millions of people no matter who you are you will look bad unless you train. they're human)

I agree! he seem to have trouble getting out how he feels.
Ok so no one asked but im gonna psychoanalyze this guy
- He seem to have deeply rooted avoidant issues and he also seems somewhat anxious, which are both things that can be regulated with therapy
- He clearly mentions multiple times in this podcast a lack of impulse control, and he seem to be internalizing (i.e. being introspective and blaming himself) for alot of that stuff.
- Altho, it is better to internalize then to be reactionary and blame others. People who are reactionary usually have less chances to actually look at themselves and go to therapy.
- I think the next step for gaining the emotional maturity he seeks is to reach the point where he realize he needs to go to therapy.
- Going to therapy will help him articulate his feelings, and it might give him some insight and closure about his relationship, which might even help his song writting, since his public image will align with his songs in a positive way!
Just observing here, also only listened to half of that podcast so idk
Zach is so good. He makes peeps comfy so they can open up. He's low key a therapist it's amazing. I relate to Tucker.. poor dude but great music so I guess it's working

Tucker is an angel. I love that Mac Miller discovered him (Tucker also went to college in Pitt, I live here now) - it gave me confidence in his music before I even heard it. But I love him as a person even more. He’s a sweetie

I met Tucker after one of his shows from his last tour and that man is so damn kind. I literally accidentally hit him in the face with a shirt I gave him and he was so funny and kind about it. Honestly such an angel. I only wish success for him and I know this album is going to be his best one yet.

I completely relate to all of this. Specifically, breaking up over home sickness. Left my fiance because I missed the east coast so much (and family/home). I felt so lost and depressed. It was a mess.
Also 9:10 I can relate to as well. Quiet is so lovely and space. You can be totally in love but still want peace, quiet, space. Recently watched the 3rd season of Bridgerton: Francesca Briderton is a great example of this.
Tucker your music is so freaking good. I blast the stripped down "notice me" and "that's just how it goes" so much.

The digging into his personal life and trying to be a therapist in this episode wasn't my favorite interview style.
ii think tucker also set that tone of like a therapy session, i think it was well needed for him, he prob needed it.

it’s not for everyone but i’ve listened to zach sang for years and it’s just his style of interviewing. he always holds such comforting and non-judgmental space that the artists end up being vulnerable and they both learn- it’s kind of beautiful. i feel like it never gets too deep. usually just talk of emotions in general.
Do you naively think that tucker and his pr team won't ask about the questions asked prior to the interview? He knew what Zack was gonna tackle!! That's why he came back!
