I've watched enough of these videos and it's got me to wondering. Are those creatures blind? They can't seem to recognize when an enemy is right in front of their face. They only seem attack after they sense vibrations.
I would like that. But interestingly, the giant water bug is the assassin bug's distant relative. 1:02 Kinda makes it pointless to chuck the assassin bug rite next to the hornet without giving it a chance to adjust to the environment. Makes the interaction pointless that way.
Once the hornet is locked in a closed box, its aggressiveness will be greatly reduced, and it will be more passive than in the wild. This environment also is not conducive to the attack of the hornet because it is deprived of its flying ability. Other predatory insects that are good at flying are also difficult to perform in this environment, such as dragonflies. If you really want to compare, Palawan giant stag beetle(Dorcus titanus palawanicus) is invincible in this kind of closed box.
I was thinking about that too since the video started with the hornet being kind of slippy in the cage... then it made me really sad that the video concept isn't fair since it's supposed to be for learning, but it ends up being violent and horrible just because :(
Asian giant hornet is a rough matchup for a mantis because the hornet is bulky, very strong, and armored. It has to be able to catch and hold it in place to win. You would need a huge mantis to have a competitive fight. I think venom is probably necessary for most insects to have a decent chance against the massive hornet.
The acid test for the Assassin Bug is confronting the bully of the bug world, the centipede. Tarantulas and scorpions struggle to land a bite/sting on the centipede because of its narrow shape and body armor. Maybe the Assassin Bug's lethal schnoz could do the trick.
