  • Time for some proactive kiln maintenance. Changing bad parts before they fail sure keeps our kilns operating around the clock. This video depicts a basic relay change and a bit about creative use of diagnostic equipment.

This is great! I've had a hard time finding info specific to Cone Art Kilns, so thank you very much. I wonder if you could do a video just going through the trouble shooting process? If I get an Err-1, how do I know if it is a relay, thermocouple, or the elements?

No worries, give us this weekend we usually go through one of our cone arts top to bottom. I will just film it and put it up on the channel.

How can you test a relay when the element is broken?

It’s difficult. One way would be to remove ALL the high voltage to the relay, activate it and check that the normally open contacts close and have little to any measurable resistance after they closed. This takes some knowledge in the use of a meter, the operation of the relay, and a whole lot of caution around high voltage circuits so not for anyone not familiar and skilled with such testing and safety precautions.
