    It's funny because the Live Action comes off as more historically consistent but the animated version of the character is actually more proactive. I've always been partial to the original -- 1950 Cinderella might be the earliest films to depict emotional and domestic abuse realistically...

    • @delireent.3960
      @delireent.3960 Рік тому +149

      I kinda agree with you.
      The thing is that the two Cinderella are very different because they had a different childhood. The animated Cinderella was still a child when she became a servant, which make her way more resilient and this Traimaine scarier. In the live action, Cinderella is already grown up when she became servant. Maybe she stayed less than one year with her step family. And she was completely caught off guard and tricked by her own kindness which is an interesting dynamic. She still hoped to be loved by her step family.
      Not the animated Cinderella. Or maybe unconsciously ...
      Both film depict family abuse but in a different way and angle

    • @jamesa.romano8500
      @jamesa.romano8500 Рік тому +39

      @@delireent.3960 Thanks -- and since writing this I've since thought of films that came earlier like Gaslight and Rebecca that also touched on domestic or psychological abuse, but both of those films were gothic horror and variations on the Bluebeard story of unsuspecting women falling in love, marrying and then being terrorized, whereas Cinderella was a child and most of the abuse she experienced is implied offscreen, so as when we see her as an adult she's compartmentalized most of it so that she comes off as relatively normal, she's quick witted and sarcastic with the mice and Lucifer and relatively stoic around the stepsisters but retreats into a more reserved persona when confronted by Lady Tremaine herself. The way the animators portrayed her as desiring the approval of her step family when she comes downstairs in the new dress but pulling back in terror as her stepmother advances towards her, likely triggered into remembering past abuse, is just so expertly done and subtle as opposed to anything being outright stated

    I thought Cinderella had a more assertive personality in the original one, and I liked the music, the mice and the scariness of Lady Tremaine in the animated film. I don’t agree with it being great and even less that it was better than the original. It has so many faults. For example, her step mother and step sisters coming to her life when she was already “old” doesn’t make sense. Cinderella was tortured for years (since she was a little kid) that’s one of the reasons she feared her stepmother so much and why she wouldn’t do anything different than what she said. Also, she isn’t supposed to have any friends outside of her castle that’s why her best friends were the animals specifically the mice and why she makes the mice clothes.. she’s lonely and never gets to leave the castle hence why she was so excited to be invited to the ball. Also I don’t like that the reason why she’s nice and submissive to her stepmom is mainly because she made a promise to her mother to be kind… the whole point and message of Cinderella was that she was just naturally kind. No matter how hard life was she was never transformed by all the evil she experienced even as a literal child, she never stopped being kind, that is what made Cinderella so special. And there is soo many more errors with the life action Cinderella but I know this is already long enough😂
      Sorry I know that was long

    what always throws me off ab the animated version though is at the part where she runs away, bc there was some sort of glitch w the videotape that I had, when the prince chases her, it went all staticcy for a minute until cinderellas running down the stairs so the first time I saw the movie w no glitches and all the girls swarmed the prince so he got slowed down, I was just like "wtf is this, this wasn't in the movie???" 😅

      @@keetard no I get that I’m just saying she has way more options of support in the remake and has less of a reason to follow the will of the stepmother as she’s already a full grown adult with her own agency. Vs in the original she has 0 support or means of escape outside of her dreams. Just the simple change of keeping the original timeline I think would have driven home the point of her struggle a bit more.

The stepmother scared me so so much when I was little. I literally hid behind a pillow 😂. Also love her working outfit & her mums pink dress. I remember pretending to be Cinderella after I watch it every time. I love how they showed a bit more of here childhood in the beginning of the live action. And the scenery and set designs are amazing. Love Cinderella’s blue and pink dress! Everyone they casted played their roles perfectly! Definitely think the stepmother was slowly poisoning Ella’s dad. The live-action was visually so stunning it really could have had something there if they hadn't complETELY KILLED CINDERELLA'S PERSONALITY!!! In the animated version, she's kind but she's frustrated, she doesn't like the way they treat her but you can really feel how she has nowhere else to go, they've been building this abuse since she was a child. In the live-action, her dad dies when she's already grown up, and she has friends who want to get her out, but no she couldn't possibly leave (until she does without a second thought?!?). She just keeps passively repeating that have courage and be kind line like her head is constantly in the clouds and everything is rainbows and sunshine.
    Also, feel like so many people forget that cartoon Cindy went to the ball to have a good time not to get a man, she didn't care about the prince and didn't even realize who he was, girl just wanted a fun night out for once.

    • @birdiewolf3497

      Not to much on Miss Live Action Cindy!!! Ain't a damn thing wrong about wanting to link up with the cute boy at a party. Especially when said boy threw that party for her and was trying to disguise it as agreeing with his daddy's foolishness. She is not the goofy one in this scenario.
      Plus she did voice her frustrations. She told the step mother, " I stayed trying to go high when you go low, but you just nasty boots. What is your beef with me?" That was a whole scene in the movie. She really wanted this to work because she lost everybody in her life, plus she didn't want to give up her family home to those gremlins. It was the her last connection to her parents. Obviously it would have been hard to let it go. Also I don't think she considered leaving. Maybe you are thinking of a another Cinderella movie. If I remember correctly, she was ready to reveal herself, her and her step momma went back and forth and then step momma locked her ass up. And she stays locked up until the whole reveal scene. But even so, idk that's what victims of abuse do. Plus we can't ignore the patriarchy of it all. Being a single woman with no family don't exactly have the best outcomes. If you aren't careful, that's how you end up in a brothel.

      Exactly, in the animated Cinderella, "a dream is a wish your heart makes" was her hope, dreaming for an escape from her shitty life just for a night. The live-action version made Cinderella kind of a doormat :( they took away her spunk, sassiness n personality.
      When she was locked in the tower, in the live-action she cried for a second and then went oh well singing "lavender's blue" until someone happened to hear her. I don't need to hear "have courage and be kind" 20 times to remember the message, just show me! At least in the cartoon version she had a hand in saving herself (remembering to call for Bruno so the mice could get the keys). She was resilient and proactive (how was she supposed to escape with no knowledge of how the outside world works since she was trapped with her stepmother since childhood?). Although the message wasn't explicitly mentioned, that kind of quite strength was something I admired growing up.
      The live-action was still visually stunning and well-casted but omg the disappointment of how they nuked her character into complacency makes me sad :""""
