    June 23rd is National Typewriter Day! This day commemorates when the typewriter was first patented on this day in 1868.
    For today, we thought we would address something that is sometimes mistaken for a typewriter in our print shop exhibit: the keyboard on our Model 8 Linotype, which was made in 1913. In this video, Howard explains the layout of the Linotype’s keyboard and its use.
    Full explanation of the Linotype:

    I would love to see/listen to a long-form video from you guys. Your relaxing voice, storytelling, and the noise from the machines is so soothing and nice.

    Linotypes are so cool to watch operate. It's definitely one of those old-school marvels of the not-too-terribly-distant past that has a long history. I'm going to assume since I haven't seen any videos of it operating that yours is "display only", which is sad but also understandable.

    The linotype and the typewriter share roots. James Ogilvie Clephane was a figure that was pivotal in both the development of Scholes’ typewriter and Mergenthaler’s Linotype.

    @SacramentoHistoryMuseum You should add the links in the description or to a pinned comment to the other videos you have that explain how the linotype works. It took a little bit of scrolling in my search, but finally found a few and they were very interesting! (I tried to add a link here, but it booted my comment out as i assume you have it set so people can't add links in their comments, which is fine-- just thought I'd try anyway)

    I’d like to hear a LOT more about how this machine works, and I’d like to see it actually in use. Seriously, you could do an hour long video and I’d be watching that 3 or 4 times the day you post it! PRETTY PLEASE WITH A CHERRY AND SOME PEANUTS ON TOP!!!

    Please make longer videos of Howard explaining those interesting machines.. As a mechanical engineer from Germany it's so amazing how these folks developed those devices back in the days, without a computer...
    And please don't cut the video constantly, this destroys the relaxing ASMR character of the videos :-)
    Much love!

    So, it produces types to be placed in presses?

    • @amartini51
      @amartini51 3 місяці тому +2

      Yes! Instead of setting type by hand, one letter at a time, like you see them do on this channel sometimes - you press the keys and out comes a whole line of type as one piece of metal. There are videos of linotypes being used if you search (other channels) - I think it’s cool to watch them work.
