-Back when HTC was at the top with Samsung -Back when the Nexus line was still around -back when 16GB of storage were more than enough -back when phones had physical home buttons
yeah, all your features will be removed. be careful though, some people have reported their phones not turning back on since the updates started rolling out
The HTC One Google Edition and the Normal one run on different interface. The Google Edition runs on pure android like a Nexus Device and is free from all the manufacturer bloatware. You will get fastest updates on the Google Edition. But Google HTC One will miss the HTC One features like Blinkfeed,HTC Sense,Zoe and other Camera Features
For clarification, stock android is an unthemed version of android. It's commonly referred to as vanilla android or a "pure" android experience. The hype behind having a pure android experience is that you are the first to receive system updates from Google, and from personal experience with owning my Galaxy Nexus (rooted of course) its wonderful to bypass the waiting process that Verizon set in place for updates. Not only will you receive timely updates, you won't have to learn the nuisances
Yes, hardware specs seem to be exactly the same for both the s4 and the s4 nexus edition. Both stock android and Touchwiz have their advantages and disadvantages. At the end of the day it pretty much comes down to your personal preferences on this one. And you should get Google edition if you want fast updates, or regular s4 if you don't mind waiting for updates that could take weeks, months, or even years to arrive, but keep in mind that some may never arrive eventually later on down the road.
Remember a few months ago when it was discussed that Samsung may be moving away from Google? Not necessarily away from the OS, but really marketing Samsung software like Touchwiz, S voice, etc. I think this is a way for Samsung to show that they're not moving away from Google while at the same time being able to push their custom software. It also gives Samsung a bit more love to developers, a topic which they've also taken flak for. It's a good PR move.
I think what we are seeing is two distinct categories, Nexus Devices (Google's vision for hardware) and Google's distro of Android (Google's vision for Android, the Nexus Experience)...The android code base is now used by so many manufactures who have input into the core that effectively an 'officially' stamped distro from Google may now be necessary so it can lead in this area (which they certainly have the capabilities to do) :)
There's an unlock method for almost every Samsung device out right now. The S4 variant is also working, with the Verizon model being the only exception. Until after release that is.
Agree with you. This is probably just the start of the experiment to stock the Play Store with more than just Nexus phones, but also other phones running pure Android. It's a good move and I hope an HTC built phone gets in on this in the near future.
I think its more of a move to migrate people from using branded android ecosystems such as sense and touchwiz to using stock aosp devices. You said it yourself, the benefits are more storage and no wait for updates on the nexus s4. This really seems like google attempting to spark more intrest in nexus devices and the aosp experience, especially with the coming ubuntu phone and firefox os.
I love your videos man! And not just for the content... But the different points of view you offer! I must say, everytime I watch a MKBHD video I'm left reeling with all possibilities and outcomes I couldn't have possibly imagined! So Keep up the good work and continue to surprise us! - peace.
I secretly wished for this, but I hope that you could still have all the cool features that TouchWiz offers on the Nexus experience. Those features are what made the s4.
This is kinda cool, you get instant updates and since it's rooted there's bound to be some who'll port touchwiz or at least the missing features over to this.
I have to agree with you on the latter scenario being more likely. I just don't see Google giving up the Nexus line altogether. Google would look like it's lost control of Android if they admit that Nexus phones (with on-screen buttons and all) aren't good enough to be sold to mainstream users, and it's also an implication that Samsung has clearly owned the Android ecosystem, and that they are now relying on Samsung's flagship just to get stock Android out there in the wild.
MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait for this! I was exactly like you Marques when you were saying that there'll be an S4 with stock Android, my jaw was on the floor (well, maybe on my keyboard). LOL. Gaahh, my tummy is rumblin for this! DOOOD! Kill me now! I can't contain my excitement! HAHA! Nice one MKBHD!
I like the idea, phone manufacturers should offer the users a choice like the option to install the skin features and applications they may or may not want on their phone.
You can actually do this without paying on the S3 by rooting etc :) Stock Android is nice, Samsung-filled Android is also nice, but with stock, you don't get all the pre-loaded Samsung features..
Yeah, I agree Marques. It wouldn't be good for Google to sacrifice their Nexus line to put stock Android on other devices. Although it's cool, it's expensive, and it probably won't push sales as much as they hope. I was shocked to see that $649 price tag. I think Google should just continue their Nexus line and regulate updates for Android better. Most carriers, especially Verizon, often neglect updates for Android, and that's not fair to the consumer.
*Boink* That's the sound of a hammer hitting the nail square on the head. What a dream, how amazing would it be for every device released to also have a GP edition. How sweet. The note 5 would be my pick then. Now it's the 6P; however I'm using a note 3 on AOSP LP so kinda just as good? I was on a CM13 (6.0MM) build but AICP on LP is better than Temasek's CM on MM.
this is so true. It only takes simple maths to figure the huge savings made buying a phone outright and going on a sim-only plan compared to signing a 12 or 24 month contract
ill agree that Hugo threw the word nexus around, but he never called this an actual nexus or 'nexus experience DEVICE' , only that it offered a nexus experience. the point in making that distinction is that google uses nexus devices as reference points for android oems...THIS is how good they can be folks! and then oems go from there. look how epic handsets have gotten SINCE the nexus4. this is probably googles way of showing oems aosp is appealing, even at 649. i love that they are doing it.
You have a very good point I can def see google releasing more nexus device like phones with pure stock android like have a wide selection of stock Htc , Motorola , etc to choose from in the google play store that would be awesome
Also the incentive for unlocked phones is going prepaid. F contracts. T-Mobile's got one of the best prepaid pricing structures going right now, and it includes LTE support.
yeah, i don't think google will stop the nexus line either...just with last year's launch of the nexus 4, i saw the whole line gain many, many new fans. google is going to continue. marques, realistically, who do you think will be the manufacturer of the next nexus?
I see it more as the first step in a direction where more phones will be getting the stock experience. Isn't that what google wants? Stock android on more phones, or at least the option. The Nexus line will still be Google's showcase flagship, they're just extending the software to more phones.
I love stock android to the point where I bought 2 Samsung phones, a Galaxy A5 2017, and a Galaxy A9 Pro, and the A9 pro runs the real stock Android 7.1.2 Nougat, and my SIM switches back and forth, the A5 is my everyday, normal phone running Android 7.1.1 Touchwiz S experience 8.1, and I decided on an A9 pro because it is a BATTERY BEAST! I love the A9 Pro with the stock android *not custom rom, the real thing* and the battery. I use it on my Niagara Falls trips or road trips. But I still carry the A5 with me as a back up phone, but the A9's 4350mah battery (It is an upgrade from Samsung) or for the normal one 4000mah is awesome and I rarely have to charge it. And of course, the stock android.
Hey, Marques, chances are the Google S4 will come loaded with Android 4.3. June 10th is the release date for 4.3 and it'll be pushed to Nexus devices around then. Also, a white Nexus 4 is set to accompany the update on June 10th. Search on Google for: "White Nexus 4 and Android 4.3 coming June 10th"
It`s a nexus experience device, but it`s not a nexus. It`s not as cheap, and it has a lot of differences from a real nexus, as you stated. I`m gonna wait until the next nexus comes out.
i believe that at the end, you can download pure nexus os in case of you dont like the touches samsung or htc using with their software, also to let these devices have continues updates in case the company stop giving their support to the new os '' android os ''
the google edition gets the updates from google...the normal version has to wait for samsung leaking some roms and then for the community to modify this version to give it out to you as an nightly or even experimental build with alot of bugs...
It really does create more questions than it answers, surely if Google were to head down the path of a family of Nexus 'like' devices, would that not kill the experience for the actual Nexus device?
1st it's not exactly the easiest thing to put stock android on most US carrier S4's because most of them have a locked bootloader. There is supposedly a workaround now but I still think it is in proof of concept mode. 2nd the point of official vanilla is up the moment OS updates. You don't need to wait for carrier/Samsung updates to filter to you about 6+ months after the latest and greatest that is if you even get an update at all. Just be glad the current S4 came with 4.2.2 at release.
They all have different features and different layouts. Because of that, the company is who you have to wait on for updates, while stock android is just plain google and when they have a new update you can instantly get it.
yes depending on what model s4 you have you can install a custom rom you need to be rooted though (i think) and no you wont have features like smart scroll, smart pause, smart stay etc... also you get stock camera not the touch wiz samsung camera you wont get things like animate so all the samsung gimmicky features are all gone so if you dont care for those features go a head and do it but make sure its for your device model i am puttting it on my non-LTE s4 and keep the LTE in Touch Wiz
Wow. A while back, I had read some notions of what could now be called the 'nexus experience' for phones that weren't true Nexus. This may well be the start of it.
I hope it's Google attempt of seeing if people prefer "the Google Experience" and they'll just release ways of going from HTC & Samsung flagships to the "Nexus" experience. I would definitely prefer a Google experience with instant updates through Google Play rock'in SGSIII
