Agree completely. I feel like it's a bit different to the traditional BMW and people cant handle that. I love the large rear and the chunky side view, the front feels like it could have been a little longer in both the 1 and 2 series but overall a nice, modern disgn. It's quick, fuel efficient and has a state of the art infotainment system. I think it's a solid 8/10. Would have liked a straight 6 3L but that engine costs you much more than the 2 series in anything 2020. EDIT, I get the feeling theres a lot of existing BMW owners commenting hate on this to justify money spent on something unoriginal and regressive.

I just bought one (M235i, used, 25km), and think this is actually a brilliant little car. It was designed to compete directly with both the Mercedes A220/CLA and the Audi A3, both of which have been highly successful in the market and which are also front-wheel-drive or front-wheel-biased AWD. If you’re looking for a smaller *4-door* vehicle, as I was, and like a sporty ride with tight suspension and good power-to-weight ratio, this is a nice little car. If you don’t need four doors, then by all means go for the ‘proper’ M2 coupe-although the latest version of that car is way uglier than this, especially at the front. I like technologically and mechanically interesting cars that show the evolution of thinking to solving new problems. I am impressed by how well the adaptive drive shifts power to the rear wheels as needed: I’ve not been able to get it to understeer. The engine is the most powerful 4-cylinder that BMW have produced. My car has the 19 inch alloy wheels, so without adaptive suspension: I like to feel the road, but if you don’t then try to get the 18" wheels with the adaptive option.
