Larry, I admire that you’re humble enough to acknowledge and thank Bill for his suggestions.
I miss Bill very much. We kid around a lot together but he was worth his weight in gold when it came to help and ideas. He can see things that I just miss. Forest for the trees kind of thing.
you are the tupac shakur of RV repair :) there is no one else who does it better : )thank you
FYI, I don't like philips head screws almost as much as I don't like slotted head screws. Square drive is better than philips, and star (same as Torx) drive is best of all. Philips strips when old and stuck. I hear your driver skipping even while driving in new philips. Square and star never skip. You can buy #8 stainless steel or regular steel screws with star heads on Amazon... about $10 for 100 screws. BTW, steel touching aluminum causes a galvanic reaction and corrosion. Stainless and aluminum does not.
You make everything look so easy!
+doogals99 Well it's not rocket science but it's good to have someone who's been through the mill and made all the mistakes to watch do this stuff so you don't have to make the same mistakes I did. I make mistakes so you don't have to.... Thanks for watching!
Sploogie. Great word. Thanks for these videos. Very helpful.
Glad to be of help.
Like the camera man asked, I keep my putty in a plastic bag. Even if it is in ball form. When the putty is exposed it collects dust which inhibits its "stickability". Especially if the wind blows. More important if it is still on the roll, don't leave it exposed. I found out. Like your videos ! !
Great comment. Thanks for your input.
I love the shirt Mr Larry!
+cutworm59 Ya cool eh? I may be offering those to the public soon.
+mobiltec I will buy a couple when you do much Brother, XL
+cutworm59 They will be on my website and available from Cafepress. Kinda expensive but that's because I think they make all their money on shipping LOL. I won't be making any profit on them because they are already too expensive.
Heya! I need to replace the awning rail, but not the skin of the trailer. My question is, do I need to worry about lining up the new screw holes with the existing ones in the trailer, as lining the two up will be difficult! Will this compromise the water tightness if I don’t?
You know there is a tool for reshaping the awning rail slot if that is what your problem is. The old holes may not be in good shape anyways so if you fill them all first (provided they don't line up) then you can make new holes. Just use good putty tape. 1 inch wide by 1/8 inch thick. Fill the old holes with glue and laytex calking. You can email me if you have more questions. Go to my website for contact info. www.cannedhamtrailers.com
Thank you for this video! I am replacing the siding that attaches to the top and comes down on the front (trailer hitch end). I removed some rail from the top where the siding attaches to the roof. I think it's j rail but its a little flattened and they had painted some type of sealant on it. Would it generally be j rail going across the width on the roof or something else? My camper is a 66 Kodiak kodiak.
I will need to see some photos. Email your question and photos to me at mobiltec@gmail.com I'll be happy to help you out.
Start at the wing as that's a fixed point and work forward
Look I'm HERE... I found your video!!!!
Ha! Always a treat to pick up the drill, especially when you're doing something important, like a video, and the battery is dead. My spare has saved my ass more than once.
"Somehow over time it kinda lost its shape." Somehow over time don't we all lose our shape? LOL
Fascinating process, Larry, and labor intensive. And you showed exactly why dry runs are so valuable. Re-applying old J rail is one of countless cases for doing them.
Just curious... In a fair labor market, how much do you generally pay someone to "just stand there and look stupid"? :-P
+Anonymoose Oh I can't afford to pay cash for that. He get's an old trailer for his labor. He get's lunch for standing there and looking stupid.
Larry, what are your thoughts about the temperature of the putty tape before you stick it to the railing? I have some trouble keeping this same product stuck on there.
The warmer the better. In cold weather it doesn't like to stick to much of anything. I know it can be a pain if it's outside. Move your work into the sun.
I have a 1957 mercury... and i need to make the j rail along the bottom portion of my trailer? what do you suggest... im in hawaii and just cant get things like the mainland. mahalo
How cool that you have a 57 Merc in Hawaii... I have a friend who lives on the big island and has a business there. Maybe he can tell me something about shipping. If you have the old railing you can repair it. Just takes some time and figuring out what tools will help reshape it the best. If you find an auto body man he could do it on the side for you really well I bet. If you are missing the rail you would be talking shipping from the mainland. Not sure how that would work but you could ask. Either Hemet Valley RV or So Cal Teardrops.... Google both and ask them if they will ship 8 foot sticks to you... My website has all these links by the way.
Larry good to see you back "on the job" hope the eyes are holding up
+trapper23ful Well one is holding up. I can't see much out of the other one. Good to be working on my trailers again though.
thoughts with you, as an aside early thanksgiving wishes
+mobiltec Just off the wall thinking, Larry, but with the retina problems, could you also possibly be dealing with cataracts? I ask because they're yet another fringe benefit of getting old, and I had cataract surgery on my right eye last Wednesday. It's as if I had a new eye installed, and I'm getting the left eye done next Friday, and I can hardly wait. Maybe that's aggravating your own vision problems?
Anonymoose Yes John there are cataracts in the eye that was injured and they were caused by over medication which they say was necessary. I will be having surgery for that sometime this winter. The VA moves very very slowly...
+mobiltec Yeah, the VA never seems to be in much of a hurry. At least fixing it is a simple process these days. Mine took 5 or 6 minutes, under a local, and when he was done, I sat up and looked around. The results were instantaneous, and other than a slight scratchiness for the first day, there's been no evidence that there even *was* a surgery. The "recovery" consists of taking it easy for a few weeks and using some prescription eyedrops for a month.
So newbie question; my 1971 Shasta Compact rail doesn't look like that, it's more a U shape. It's also smashed to smithereens in a lot of places. Does someone sell new replacement rail?
Yes. What you have is "Top Edge Molding" and it's sold by www.socalteardrops.com But you might check with local people first to save on shipping. Some RV parts stores carry it. Or look for an RV repair shop and ask them...
Where do u get that rail from? Wr have class c . Need to redo the J rail. We are new at this. Help!
You'll have to begin checking with RV dealers in your local area. Otherwise shipping can be pretty expensive. If you don't mind the shipping you can get it in 8 foot lengths from So Cal Teardrops. Just google them.
Is there a reason to apply the putty tape to the J Rail rather than the camper itself? What are your thoughts on using seam sealer tape as well?
I have found that if you apply the tape to the camper first it usually doesn't line up well with the J Rail. I have no idea what seam sealer tape is but what ever it is it will probably promote more leakage than it helps. This way is tried and true for over 50 years. Why screw with success?
@@mobiltec good point.
What if you need to bend new j rail instead of using the existing? Is there a tool or do you just kinda fudge it as you go?
I showed in this two part series how to bend new J Rail. The AWNING rail is different. You can't bend that yourself so you better hang on to the old one. If your radius on the J Rail is too tight you can use a Metal Stretcher/Shrinker tool which I show in J Rail For Toasters which you can find on my website. www.cannedhamtrailers.com/tidbits.htm.
Do you use putty tape for everything ? Do you ever use white butyl rubber tape?
+ww321 I use putty tape for everything. That butyl tape is for newer trailers and the kind of windows that are installed in them. Putty tape is much easier to work with also.
do you have site you purchase the putty tape from? Would local hardware store carry this? I have to re-seal a section of my j rail and been watching your videos to try and figure it out.
I feel so silly.. I know what Putty Tape is...
Haven't used it a lot... but many years ago
I did use it on one of my RV rebuilds...
a window I think.
What size/type of screws did you use to install the J-rail?
Number 8 Panheads. 3/4 inches long. I buy them by the hundred at Ace Hardware. Best price.
hi Sr. what is that tape reference, can you show the seller link pls.
thanks
That is putty tape. Not butyl tape. The Putty tape has the crinkle paper on the back and is gray in color. It's sold by many distributors. You can get it from Vintage Trailer Supply. Just google them or go to my website. It's in the Canned Ham Links section...
thanks

Great Idea

(I have never seen you do the "Putty Tape")
I have never used putty tape... but I will now!!!
So... (question) ... you're putting it on the backside
of the J Rail, I'm assuming... You didn't say in your video.
Sorry I missed your question. Yes. On the back side. I have other videos showing how to install the putty tape.
Where do you purchase your awning rail?
The only places that carry it now are RV Parts places usually found as part of a service center and the rail will be straight. I don't know how to bend it. I've never had to buy it. I've always had it on the trailers I've restored to start with.
awesome. but darn my video downloaded no longer words due to copyright tort litigation.
oh dang... What can you do about this?
Is there a difference between J rail and awing rail?
Yes. Go watch my video called "All About J Rail" Everything is on video and it's all on my website listed and indexed to make things easy to find.
@@mobiltec
I found it...
Great video
Thank you...
I learned a lot....
Where can I buy this Putty Tape...
(the RV dealer here is tooooooo expensive, believe me)
We only have one in our town... with growing thousands of
RVs because of the Oil Field... and I'm very serious...
Many Many RVs... That is why I'm completely refurbishing
my 1985 Class A RV... to sell to someone in the oil field...
I might keep the little vintage 1972 Aristocrat tiny travel trailer.

Will do... Thank you so much!!!
What is the tape called?
Its called Putty Tape and you can get it from www.vintagetrailergaskets.com
high 5 to your helper... good job.
+C Webster Thank you I am sure he will appreciate your compliment. He is a very old and good friend of mine whom I have known for over 30 years and we get along very well together. He's retired and I'm retired and working on projects like this together has turned hard work into fun work.

You should get your helper a T-shirt that says "Second Guy".
I don't have Bill any longer. I moved 450 miles away and he didn't want to come with me.
Maybe "I'm not Bill" for your next helper. He missed a big career opportunity.
The mastic twist s when I put screws in how I stop this
I don't understand your question.
@@mobiltec when I put the screws in the sealant twist with the screw
@@philhode5104 I still don't understand your question. What are you asking me.
@@mobiltec when I put the bar back on ,the screws that I put in make the butyl twist and pull it all over
@@philhode5104 I've never had that problem. All I can say is watch the video and do what I do. You need the putty tape to stick to the J Rail good. Then put the J Rail up and screw it in. The putty tape will squeegy out as you tighten it. Then run a razor knife along the edges to trim the excess putty tape.
