I'm so excited for part 2. Sure this is a camera out of the reach of most of us but it's great seeing what's achievable with some of the best prosumer level kit. It's only a matter of time before that level of quality trickles down.
Excellent camera for pros and perhaps for TCSTV, but at 8000$+lenses I presume this one is not going to be one of your more popular videos... As an idea, I propose you "The Video-AF Shootout": a direct comparison between the best performing cameras at the moment (NX1, 7DMKII, a6000...). Many people still don´t know about how well these cams track focus in video mode already, and it would be nice to see a direct comparison of their capabilities, maybe selliing a couple more cameras at TCSTV in the process... Cheers guys.
This camera goes against the Canon C100/C300/1D C crowd, and I for one would choose the FS7 over those cameras. Now, a test that I would love to see is how well the FS7 render skin tone over those Canon cams, though. There's something about how Canon's color science render very nice skin tone.
$8000 lenses? What are you talking about? This camera will accept any lens that covers an APS-C sized sensor. The E-mount is one of the most adaptable mounts ever made, and you could feasibly use near any lens you can imagine on this camera.
Still not better... Unless you mean up to $8000 lenses, which is true of basically any camera... But the fact of the matter is that an $850 Sigma ART lens will work perfectly on this camera and match the resolution the sensor is able to capture in spades. You're making it seem as though you need an $8000 or more lens for this camera and that's patently false.
joshuassonjs Not if you want excellent 4K image quality. Most of the top tech reviews have actually upgraded to this guy. That's why I'm looking at it.
Phil Vierno Oh, well if thats the trend. I'm just thinking that for the money that beast, rig, lenses, and memory costs that you could come into a gh4 or a7s kit with external recorders, lenses, storage, etc and still have money to spare for extra lighting or whatever. I don't do high tech reviews (although I intend to start doing some reviews and such this year) but it seems that either of those kits would serve a review video equally as well. Of course It depends on what you already own too. If you already have compatible gear with this than it would be a better option as long as the alternative kit wasnt still significantly cheaper. Of course I could just be totally off base lol
Sounds very impressive. 4k to card is great. 180p super slow mo to end if card is amazing. Like the look of the new handled. I'll never own or probably ever use one. But great review
I always watch these videos thinking "I'd really want that, that looks neat!" and then I look up the price and realize "I really don't need that.. that's way to expensive for what I'd do with that" xD Still always fun to watch these tech rundowns. Looking forward to part 2.
I watch Chris & Jordan show just recently when they've moved to DPReview TV. Seeing this.. well this is a good quality 4K video, make no mistakes, but feel quite a bit archaic using a big, purpose-built, professional video camera to shoot it. No wonder it's such a big deal when recently they made a video explaining why they now make videos using hybrid interchangeable mirrorless cameras. And a monopod, since Jordan doesn't need to lug around 5 kg worth of gear. I also a bit surprised even today, the FS7 is more expensive than the GH6, even S1H.
TheCameraStoreTV What's your opinion on "ease of use" of the camera for a producer / shooter? I've heard many things (such as changing ISO) have to be done through menu, and that cameras like C300 are much easier / faster to use. Thanks for your input!
Awesome guys! If you are able to include any instructive audio from the colorist/editors while you are at the grading studio that would be much appreciated. :)
All well and good about the picture quality but what about the mic preamps? How good is the frequency response does it roll off a lot of 20 Hertz. Are they as good as the mic preamps in the PMW-EX 3?
Wow, thank you for producing a camera overview/review that is truly informative and tells me what I need to know to decide if it's a camera I want to use/own. Very thorough. The only thing still not clear to me is your comment about it not quite shooting full 4K internally. Is that what the external recorder is for? Thanks again. A rocking review!
Hey Dave, You can get Cinema 4K off the sensor, but it does require an external recorder like the Odyssey 7Q for the time being. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for part 2! Jordan @ TCSTV
Definitely some much needed improvements over the FS700. Loved that camera, but if you're going to run-n-gun you need something more solid. Great video. Thanks, guys.
There's something wrong with the reds in your video. The saturation seems a bit too high and has magenta shift. Is it because the way you graded the footage or there's some issues with the color balance in the raw footage?
I wasn't going to post it because I know 10 bit LOG files can be graded anyway you want and over the top red seems to be fairly normal for Sony, at least my fs100, fs700 and I think my new fs7 all needed a little tweak to the color matrix if you want to bake in a "normal" or "realistic" look. I think Sony really should do a MUCH better job of explaining the Picture Profile settings, they are infinitely adjustable (knee and slope, gamma, WB offset, RG shift, color offset, black point, curve.... on and on and on. Its pretty much impossible to do to a review or especially a comparison of two cameras because all you end up reviewing/comparing are the settings of the camera and not the cameras themselves. Anyway cool review and thanks for posting this guys really nice to see the fs7 can get soaked and even the LCD turned out ok... never broke the fs700 but it always felt a little flimsy to me.
It is more complicated! You have to think about keeping your footage stable (even in good light), adjusting your ND filter because you need to use the right shutter speed for your frame rate regardless of lighting conditions, color grading your footage in post, graphics, and audio just to name a few things. And you probably have to think about all that while using manual focus because you don't want your camera hunting in the middle of a clip. Video AF is getting better these days, but pros still use manual focus almost exclusively. Even if you just use a DSLR or mirrorless camera, if you want to do things properly, you will probably want to invest in a tripod, a shoulder rig, a follow focus, a microphone, a matte box, and an external monitor.
If you compare the A7s + Atomos Shogun + a rig + XLR box at almost 6000€ vs the FS7 at 7000€ the FS7 looks like a no brainer unless you need the low light and the photo capabilities. Great review! I wish I had the money to afford it... looking forward to part 2 :D
Hi awesome review after watching that I decided to purchase this camera. Very happy :) I use Sony PXW-FS7 and I noticed that in Cine EI I can't turn on Monitor LUT I can only turn on SDI1 & Internal Rec but i don't want to record the LUT, but it is only on available option to turn on than all MLUTS are on, but I can't turn it on separately they are on only if I turning on sdi1 and internal rec. Please give me some advice Thank you.One more thing I noticed SDI1 HDMI is yellow color and Sdi2 viewfinder is gray out and orange any idea what settings I need to change? when I'm changing SDI2 there is communicate "Cannot Proceed" please help me solve this problem thank you. All the best
Great Video - thanks! I get to Demo this thing today. I currently use a 5D Mark III for shooting - just briefly, what are some things I will really enjoy on this camera? I am also going to demo a C300 - which do you guys prefer? What are some great things about the FS7? I've just heard a lot of people mention EX1 and FS7 in the same sentence, and I'm not sure if I like that. Thanks though - great review! The footage looks awesome on the toboggan.
I far prefer the FS7 to the C300. 4K, slow motion, and a much better color space. The ability to adapt nearly any lens to the FS7 is also a huge bonus. I would never compare it to the EX1, it's a different type of camera. Jordan @ TCSTV
Always a perfect review. Love the camera, can you plz show us this camera on full setup, with mat box and all. plus can you show us different e-mount or other lens on this camera. thanks in advance. I am one of your customer at your location :)
Verdoux007 i think they should have underexposed a bit. As it is he is pretty pale. Dropping exposure might have helped the higlights and the volor in his cheeks lol
Its mentioned beneath the video: "Shot on the Sony FS7". So obviousely there is a problem with clipping highlights. I thought this cam has got 14 stops of dynamic range? Where are they? In the blacks?
I like Chris as a presenter but I think for video cameras it should be Jordon doing the presenting or Jordan voice overing a lot of sexy b-roll with Chris as a hand model / human tripod. Sorry Chris but Jordan's the video expert.
Hey there, I was just about to buy this camera until I learnt that its not full 4K until you apply the update for full 4K resolution. Sony have a habit of updating cameras from the FDR AX1E that didnt come with AVCHD only when updated firmware. Smh. Now they release the FS7 only to surprise us with a 4K update they mentioned but will not provide the same for FDR AX1E which is only UHD. Sony scare me because they have hidden moves. Cinema cams at 4k resolution are easy to find because of prices but now KineMAX has a 6K cam around the same price as this FS7 plus CION have a 4K 4.4.4 prores cinema cam at £7k($14,000). Is Sony losing its touch!? in 2015 with all this competition. Prores seems to be the cinema choice for recording for better colour results.?
Why can't Sony make a video camera with 16-200mm constant 1.8 lens ? I don't mind if it is abit bulky or abit expensive as long as i don't need to change these bloody lenses for shoot and run.
Closest thing is the Canon 17-120mm T2.9. Fairly compact, and it'll only set you back $35 000. I'm sure Sony could probably throw together a 16-200 T2 for only a few hundred thousand. Jordan @ TCSTV
Are there any girls in Alberta or have they all moved to warmer climates? :P Nice review as always, one small critique, please show more of the product as you are talking, especially when you talk about ergonomics. The 2 second glimpses are many times not enough.
+mathmason Joao's question still stands... I'll answer it: it's not. People with money will buy it as they buy track-ready superbikes: thinking they can handle them, but really not even close.
im sorry but this all looks horrible. it looks like your almost using a green screen. im not sure if thats the cameras fault or the settings you have it on
Honestly for the price ($11,000 W/ lens) it doesn't look like a worth while upgrade. I have a FS100 and the image quantity is about the same. So unless you really need more than 1080P and 60FPS I don't see the point in paying a extra $7,000 for this camera.
I have the 100, 700 and fs7 and its so hard to judge a camera from videos... the Picture Profile settings are infinitely adjustable, literally a million possible variations (and virtually no documentation from Sony about how the settings affect the image) its a crap shot. You know even your fs100 could look like complete and total garbage or absolutely stunning depending on how you shot and/or graded it. The fs700 is a pretty fair amount easier to get good color and especially highlight rendering vs. the fs100 and the fs7 is a little better than the fs700 in that regard plus with the added benefit of 10bit SLOG3 (benefit once you know how to expose and edit it) its even more forgiving. It is worth the price, but those memory cards and the battery cost really gets the cost up fast! Maybe a good time to buy a used FS700, watched a dealer demo go for $4000 USD free shipping from a well known retail store 2 weeks ago.
Waoh you have all 3? I'm a bit jealous haha. Ya, it's as much what YOU can do with the camera as what the camera can do. If you're skilled enough, you can make T3i footage look like it's straight from a full budget movie.
***** Yes but just for a couple of months the 100 or 700 are going on Ebay. Honestly I think a well rounded 700 or 100 kit (decent lenses, good tripod and maybe a gimbal or jib....) would be much better than just an FS7 with a basic weak tripod and kit lens. It was easier for me to make the leap because I do much more work for other people than I do for myself and more and more they were asking for larger file size codecs and 10bit LOG and the 4k will give them room to reframe and still get great 1080. If it was only for me I would have bought lights instead
uuuuuuugh, someone get Jordan his own channel so he will stop bogging us down with boring VIDEO camera reviews. Chris, come on, where's my stills camera fix?? One month into 2015 and all I've got to show for it is some alpine gloves...
TheCameraStoreTV NO! Not good enough. You know why? Cause you're fucking awesome. YOU DESERVE A DEDICATED CHANNEL. Maybe I should start a petition on Change.org
That's absolutely NOT true about SD cards. There are SD cards that are capable of handling bit rates of up to 500-750 Mbps for the high end cards. I need only point to blackmagic's pocket cinema camera and it's highest quality recording (which is RAW) to throw some weight to what I'm saying. You have to make sure you are purchasing an SD card with sufficient write speeds, however, and that requires a bit of reading because the speed on the front of the SD card is read only speed and is USUALLY not the same as write. Write speeds are usually about half, so you need to make sure you get the ones where the write speeds and read speeds are the same, and fast enough. In other words, SD cards are VERY capable and if you get the fastest ones available (around 90-100 MB/s which is over 750 Mbps) then you should not be having these performance issues that you're talking about AT ALL. So in conclusion, SD cards are convenient and great, and there really are not any buts in the context of what you're speaking about. That card is 400 MB/s (about 3.4 Gbps) which is crazy fast, and that's great, but it's not needed for anything short of hollywood production recording. That being said, it's fine that they're using a new format and I'm all for moving forward with new and better and faster technologies, but you are SO SO wrong about SD cards and their limitations.
Please bring back Jordan for the video reviews this Bobblehead guy is annoying. You can tell he just loves hearing himself talk. And why the hell do they keep jump cutting to all these different locations for no reason?????
You're getting better guys. Enjoying every new review more and more.
My favorite photo-gear channel currently on UA-cam!
Enjoyed watching this!
The "run and gun package" picture of Jordan with the girl taking a photo behind is beyond awesome.
I'm so excited for part 2. Sure this is a camera out of the reach of most of us but it's great seeing what's achievable with some of the best prosumer level kit. It's only a matter of time before that level of quality trickles down.
as much as i like bloom, i enjoy these reviews 100 times more. great work as usual
Really really great video. I'd love it if you put a link to the FS7 in the video description so I could check it out at your store.
SomeCoolTech Here's the link, also now added to the description:

Great review Chris !
Just impatient to see part 2 !!
Phil (france)
cant wait for the 2nd part. really curious about slog-3 on the grading house

"8000$ PLUS lenses" So I must be talking about your inability to read properly and/or your burning desire to correct somebody.
Still not better... Unless you mean up to $8000 lenses, which is true of basically any camera... But the fact of the matter is that an $850 Sigma ART lens will work perfectly on this camera and match the resolution the sensor is able to capture in spades. Mark Nakib
Well, at least you made clear which one is it... :D
Bye Mark!
The great thing about camera store is that i dont need to watch the video before liking it. I know it will be great. Thanks guys !!!
Whoa... how does that built in ND work? That's pretty slick.
Thinking about upgrading to the FS-7 for video reviews. What an investment though.
Worth it.
Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV Nice! I'll wait for the other parts of your review first before making any commitments.
TheCameraStoreTV
Just for review videos? I understand that this thing is amazing (Im drooling a little) but wouldn't that be major overkill? Lol
joshuassonjs Not if you want excellent 4K image quality. Most of the top tech reviews have actually upgraded to this guy. That's why I'm looking at it.
Phil Vierno
Oh, well if thats the trend.
Frankly speaking, I wouldn't want to own and carry this kind of expensive gear around, you always risk to get injured and robbed by some thugs.
Dorf Schmidt lol you get insurance for $8000 cameras.
What lav were you using? Great rejection of all that traffic - and that person putting their bike in the trunk!
Great review!
Can't wait to see the part two review
You guys " ROCK " period.
Great Review. Loved the durability testing of the FS-7 ( and Jordan!) :D
The 1x1 panels used were pretty powerful to be exposing in darkness at 180fps. What brand and model lights are they?
I watch Chris & Jordan show just recently when they've moved to DPReview TV. Seeing this.. well this is a good quality 4K video, make no mistakes, but feel quite a bit archaic using a big, purpose-built, professional video camera to shoot it. No wonder it's such a big deal when recently they made a video explaining why they now make videos using hybrid interchangeable mirrorless cameras. And a monopod, since Jordan doesn't need to lug around 5 kg worth of gear.
I also a bit surprised even today, the FS7 is more expensive than the GH6, even S1H.
I agree with Jordan, It looks like a f****n amazing camera !
Great review as usual !
I'm not really a video guy, but I really enjoyed this review! Thanks a lot for making the effort to make this excellent review!
Look forward to seeing Part 2!
TheCameraStoreTV What's your opinion on "ease of use" of the camera for a producer / shooter? I've heard many things (such as changing ISO) have to be done through menu, and that cameras like C300 are much easier / faster to use. Thanks for your input!
Hey are you guys going to do a video on the Sony FS5? As you know it's a very nice little brother to the FS7. I'm interested in your opinions. Thanks!
What PP was used to shoot this? Not Slog3 I assume?
Awesome guys! If you are able to include any instructive audio from the colorist/editors while you are at the grading studio that would be much appreciated. :)
Fantastic review! As always!
Can't wait for part two! I love Waterton, do they still have Zumm's Chicken???
All well and good about the picture quality but what about the mic preamps? How good is the frequency response does it roll off a lot of 20 Hertz. Are they as good as the mic preamps in the PMW-EX 3?
TheCameraStoreTV does the 180fps come with audio?
Wow, thank you for producing a camera overview/review that is truly informative and tells me what I need to know to decide if it's a camera I want to use/own. Very thorough. The only thing still not clear to me is your comment about it not quite shooting full 4K internally. Is that what the external recorder is for? Thanks again. A rocking review!
Hey Dave,
You can get Cinema 4K off the sensor, but it does require an external recorder like the Odyssey 7Q for the time being. Thanks for watching, and stay tuned for part 2!
Jordan @ TCSTV
With the latest firmware, the Sony FS7 can shoot DCI 4K internally. No need for an external recorder.
More video camera videos please I like these.
Me too! It's a lot of work to do properly, but it's been fun!
Jordan @ TCSTV
You'll get your fill of me in part 2!
Jordan @ TCSTV
What does the vectorscope tell you/used for?
I was looking for a channel like yours guys. I'm definitely subscribing
Looking forward to part 2!
Can i ask why you need a crew to handle an F5 ? (2:48)
Going to shoot a new music video on This!
Looks fantastic and the 4K is great!
Looks like a very cool camera but sounds very expensive. Great review as always guys, looking forward to part 2.
I want this camera! but I'll have to stick to my 60d for now
Definitely some much needed improvements over the FS700.

Nice work. Hopefully you guys touch on lenses in upcoming, esp. enjoyed the tobogganing sequence!
Good review
can i mount my lenses from canon 5d mkiii to sony fs7 ?
where can i find the tcs review on sony f5?
how do this compare to blackmagic? just curious.
Can anyone tell me how to setup the steadyshot ?
I watched this purely out of curiosity and I have to say, videography looks a lot more complicated than photography!
Videography is more complicated, but stick to your DSLR/mirrorless and you'll get pretty good results
It is more complicated! You have to think about keeping your footage stable (even in good light), adjusting your ND filter because you need to use the right shutter speed for your frame rate regardless of lighting conditions, color grading your footage in post, graphics, and audio just to name a few things. does it mount on the dii ronin ok?
FS7 or Blackmagic URSA Mini? That is the question!
I need one to be shipped to me. How much is this?
If you compare the A7s + Atomos Shogun + a rig + XLR box at almost 6000€ vs the FS7 at 7000€ the FS7 looks like a no brainer unless you need the low light and the photo capabilities. Great review! I wish I had the money to afford it... looking forward to part 2 :D
But an external recorder will get you prores and dnxhd, much better than the xavc-l codec in the fs7
what about the slow motion?
That's a fair point, suppose it depends on what you want. You're right that this is the better camera over all
Hi awesome review after watching that I decided to purchase this camera. Very happy :)

epic snow beard
I'd like to see fs700 to shogun/odyssey vs fs7 to shogun/odyssey.
Great Video - thanks! I get to Demo this thing today. I currently use a 5D Mark III for shooting - just briefly, what are some things I will really enjoy on this camera? 4k capability.
The C300 won't do 4k.
I far prefer the FS7 to the C300. 4K, slow motion, and a much better color space. The ability to adapt nearly any lens to the FS7 is also a huge bonus. I would never compare it to the EX1, it's a different type of camera.

Which wireless did you record with and for the exterior talking shots what lens?
Sony UWP-D11 wireless system in a Rode Invisilav. The lens for the exteriors was a Canon 24-70 F4 IS.

Vacation is over.
Release part 2 please.
😄
It's been a bitch to edit, but it's coming soon!
Jordan @ TCSTV
Must open account at Scotiabank.
What a strange urge to have.
I can't imagine yoiu giving classes for this without your attitiude!
What do you think of the Sony NEX-VG30?
+Mohamed Ahmed its awful
Alberta looks cold.
Always a perfect review. Love the camera, can you plz show us this camera on full setup, with mat box and all. plus can you show us different e-mount or other lens on this camera. thanks in advance.
I am one of your customer at your location :)
Where is part 2???? Just kidding, can't wait for you to release. ;)
Can't Find Part 2 Thanks
It'll be up in a few days. It's taking quite a while to cut.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Nice Thanks Great video
Jordan! This is a video camera review, I want to hear you saying "f**king amazing."
what was this recorded with? They clipping in the highlights was pretty pronounced.
great content though.
They obviously just used available light so of course the snow and the sky are going to be clipped pretty easily.

360p?
I can predict Jordan's opinion on this one
Ït's F*CKING AWESOME"
yeah what was this review shot on? I hope not the FS7 otherwise a bit disappointing with colour ranges and sharpness
it says right at the start herpaderp
Bongo2k I missed it - is this shot on FS7? and what's a herpaderp?
Why can't Sony make a video camera with 16-200mm constant 1.8 lens ?
I don't mind if it is abit bulky or abit expensive as long as i don't need to change these bloody lenses for shoot and run.
Closest thing is the Canon 17-120mm T2.9. Fairly compact, and it'll only set you back $35 000. I'm sure Sony could probably throw together a 16-200 T2 for only a few hundred thousand.

Are there any girls in Alberta or have they all moved to warmer climates? :P
Nice review as always, one small critique, please show more of the product as you are talking, especially when you talk about ergonomics. The 2 second glimpses are many times not enough.
dennytenny Sure, there are women in Alberta, but they're not very good-looking. All the hot ones move to Toronto when they turn 18.
05:23 Gave me a laugh, like a scene with Gandalf and Frodo :-)
As an Australian, this video made me feel very cold...
my sony fdr ax1 camcorder takes xqd cards
For 99% of professional users how is this camera a better investment than the a7S?
4:2:2, internal 4K, s log 3, xlr inputs, super 35 sensor, better ergonomics, 10bit video, prores support, internal nd filter, internal 180 fps and external raw recording,
+mathmason Joao's question still stands... I'll answer it: it's not. People with money will buy it as they buy track-ready superbikes: thinking they can handle them, but really not even close.
+Ricardo Lourizela he was asking for professional users
Those highlights are terrible. What lenses were used?
compare this to the c300 :)
im sorry but this all looks horrible. it looks like your almost using a green screen. im not sure if thats the cameras fault or the settings you have it on
F5 and F7 had a baby? Wait, aren't they brothers?
dat hairflip doe...
The C100 MkII looks better and better... unless you really need 4k. But do you?
With it's shiny consumer codec yeah sure.
You might want high frame rates and a more gradable image. But if you need AF, the C100 has great tracking.
Jordan @ TCSTV
Really the c100 has crappy avchd this thing puts the c300 to shame nevermind the c100mk2
You got some heavy chromatic abberations here (hair at 3:18).
Damn those Canon lenses!
Jordan @ TCSTV
yup I can only watch it upto 360p
Remember this is compressed (awfully) for UA-cam and the difference on a screen at a festival is night and day
Waoh you have all 3?
Don't worry, I'm taking a few months off so you'll mostly just get sweet, sweet photography goodness.
Jordan @ TCSTV
TheCameraStoreTV NO! Not good enough. You know why? Cause you're fucking awesome. YOU DESERVE A DEDICATED CHANNEL. Maybe I should start a petition on Change.org
Free Jordan!!!

I would sell my body parts for a FS7
am i the only one seen whole digital grain every shoot or we should blame youtube comprassion ?
hele şükür Sony gördük profilinde :)
Please bring back Jordan for the video reviews this Bobblehead guy is annoying. You can tell he just loves hearing himself talk.
And why the hell do they keep jump cutting to all these different locations for no reason?????
There's plenty of me in part 2. It's online now, check it out!
Jordan @ TCSTV
Oh for christ sake, for what you guys are doing a GoPro camera would suffice - bit over the top lol.
crazy Canadians
First viewer!!!
What about it? you're so early you can't watch this video in 1080p
That's a pretty man! LOL!
