  • In my opinion, the last few years of Jeepster Commandos under Willys Kaiser ownership are some of the best utilitarian vintage SUV’s.
Although rare, they are still somewhat affordable and quite useful thanks to their longer (101”) wheelbase, outboard mounted leaf springs, lightweight simple design, single wall body construction, improved seating ergonomics, Dana drivetrain components and powerful Dauntless V6 motor.
This 1971 example in Avocado Mist would have been available with a soft top, full hardtop, or half cab, and at one time this one has worn all three with the Bestop brand Safari style soft top being the most functional for island use.
Mechanical parts and some reproduction parts are available, although low production makes for a lack of replacement sheet metal.
Compared to other vintage SUV’s from this time period, Jeepster Commandos are a bargain IMO, and if you can find a good honest unmolested example, you may find you agree.
