Hanalei Welcomes the return of Hokulea

SolGato joins the greeting party in welcoming back Hokulea to Hanalei Bay, the first stop as she embarks on a 7 month long voyage. It was a beautiful morning with strong winds and a nice bump that made for some fun sailing footage of local sailing canoes, capped by a glassy evening and a classic Hanalei sunset.

    Looks like I'm two years behind on this one but great work. Electric motors are opening up a whole new world of boating in my opinion, especially for the budget minded. I rescued an old 22' cabin trailer sailor from the grave and have been rebuilding her into as flexible a fun boat as possible. She can still sail but now has fishing and crabbing abilities and with a swing keel, runs through 12" of water without scraping. I'm running with a gas outboard currently but very interested in an electric conversion.

      If you are okay with slow and mellow, and can figure out a way to get some solar panels mounted (provided you’re in an area with good sun) then electric makes a lot of sense. Good on you for repurposing an old hull. My Catamaran was a salvage as well. Electric has some great maneuverability and control advantages in addition to being quiet and not smelly. The ability to turn at a very slow RPM (versus idle speed of ICE motors) and to quickly switch from forward to reverse really comes in handy and allow for precise maneuvers.

      @@chadpeddy Not sure if you are referring to the electric trim or the kick-up feature, but the motors can be fully trimmed out of the water and then across the whole trim range, they have the ability to kick up on impact in cases of floating/submerged obstacles or a shallow grounding. @@adamdarrow When I take more people out, they sit on the forward trampoline. That’s why the boat has an aggressive bow up stance. The forward beam then becomes their backrest with a pillow propped against and laid in front for comfort. In original form, the Hobie Getaway can float 1000lbs and handle 4-6 passengers. I like to stand on the front trampoline when navigating shallow water so I chose not to extend the hardtop any further, but if shade is important, you could certainly lengthen the top to cover/protect the front passengers and as a bonus you’d have more surface area for additional solar panels.

      @@kauaislash5 thanks for replying! I think I will make one of these one day and essentially copy you. So you can take four adults even with the weight of the batteries and motors? Does it significantly reduce the speed and range? Also, I searched for those motors but wasn’t finding a purchase option. Where did you buy yours from? Oh, and, is your Hobie Getaway the 16’7”? I wonder about mounting the batteries so they can slide back and forth to balance out the different modes from two to four people…so the batteries are forward with two people and in the back with four. Anyways, thanks a lot. Your boat is an inspiration. What is your range with your setup?

    • @kauaislash5
      @kauaislash5 19 днів тому

      @@adamdarrow Four adults is not a problem. Have had X3 up front. Speed and range isn’t so much affected as handling. It’s a small light boat, so the extra weight makes it more sluggish just like any boat. The batteries are best placed down low, mid hull and protected from the elements. There’s no need to shift weight around with electric trim on the fly. Yes, Hobie Getaway just under 17’. Any modern big volume hulled roto molded plastic beach cat would do. I would avoid older fiberglass low volume hulled boats. You can buy motors direct or through Amazon sometimes. Caroute Outdoor

Unfortunately the used Getaways and the motors are more expensive than I anticipated so I will have to save up. Just curious, what do you think about using more powerful Caroute motors, say 2kw or even the 2.7kw motors? Do you think they work better roughly as efficient as the 1.5kw motors at the same speed, say 5mph? I wonder how much this would increase the top speed. I'm not sure I understand the steering.. to turn, do you increase speed on one side and reduce speed on the other side? If that's the case... what happens if one motor goes out?

    • @kauaislash5
      @kauaislash5 28 днів тому

      Good question. Yes, the boat uses forward and reverse differential thrust to propel and steer. The more effective operation is to reduce throttle on one motor to allow the other to overtake it in order to steer as the drag of the one hull and the reduction of thrust allows the other to easily overtake the it, versus increasing throttle to overtake the other. So “steering” the vessel means you are making minor throttle reduction adjustments to stay on course. One of the reasons it steers so well by controlling independent thrust is because the motors are well spaced apart and directly inline and behind their respective hulls. Because of this, it also means if you lose one motor as you inquired, the boat becomes very effective at will turning in tight circles. If you look closely at the video you will see an aluminum bracket mounted mid rear beam. This bracket accepts a drop in rudder in case of a motor malfunction. It is also for use with SolGato’s Crab Claw Lateen Hybrid sail rig when the motors are retracted. About 7 minutes in you can see the rudder system in this video: ua-cam.com/video/1DyONG2oHPg/v-deo.htmlsi=3CYvqzgvnJ2ZXAUe

    This looks really slick! Maybe you could add an optional reflective sail. It's just a triangle of reflective sheet - the forward edge is supported by a pole near the front left or front right corner. The rear corner is attached to the rear left or rear right corner. If there's wind, the sail will naturally flex to the side that will provide some thrust. But it's reflective, so you choose the side which will reflect extra sunlight onto the array. If the wind is too strong, you can simply let the sheet hang loose, so it's a "flag" rather than a "sail". This won't provide any wind thrust, but it could still reflect extra sunlight onto the array.

    • @kauaislash5
      @kauaislash5 2 місяці тому

      I assume you are asking in relation to prop walk/torque steer, or perhaps efficiency? I have tried all kinds of combinations, and at this scale is isn’t an issue. My current props are modified Torqeedo. Since they are CCW the motors are run in reverse for forward propulsion. One noticeable affect of running a large diameter high pitch 2-blade on a light displacement boat like this is that you can feel the blades biting water at slow speeds and you lose some low speed maneuverability an will experience more cavitation when quickly reversing from forward versus the smaller diameter low pitch factory 3-blade.

    • @kauaislash5
      @kauaislash5 2 місяці тому

      @@shan7511 The props are the same rotation. Prop walk is more of concern when you have a displacement hull that needs to get on plane, and the props start biting water from one side causing the stern to walk. And torque steer is a mute point with my boat since I use the independent thrust of each motor to steer, which means I essentially use torque steer to steer. Having the motors well spread apart helps to ensure one isn’t causing the other to air-ate. If you had them close together running same rotation props, one could bite clean water while the other disturbed water which might cause issues.

      @@shan7511 That’s pretty heavy. You would want to stick to smaller 3 blade (stock) props which are designed to propel and maneuver gear laden fishing boats. The props I use are too aggressive and would overload the motors trying to push that much weight. Not sure if by sluggish you are describing propulsion or maneuverability, but higher thrust and most especially lithium batteries will help with responsiveness in both departments. If you do end up switching to Caroute motors and are using them in a salt water environment, I recommend either disassembling them and greasing the main housing O-rings, or coating the entire motor housings in something like Plasti-Dip. With the exception of the big brand name outboard/drive manufacturers, the finish on the majority smaller name brand manufacturers just doesn’t hold up well over time. If the O-rings are sealing to a surface that is coated and the coating lifts, you lose your seal and will get water ingress in which case you are better off having a raw machined aluminum surface protected with grease. This is common practice in underwater connections. I also recommend while you have the motors apart, that you coat the housing bolts with Tef-Gel to combat dissimilar corrosion between the stainless and aluminum which will only speed up the possibility of finish lift under the sealing surface. If you don’t coat the bolts, you will have a very hard time removing them down the line if you find you need to inspect or service the motors as they will seize in the housing cap. I have recommended to Caroute that they do both, but don’t know if they have adopted the practices yet during assembly.
