Daniel Komen - 3000m World Record
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- This is possibly one of the greatest races / times ever run in the history of the sport of running. Daniel Komen comes through the first mile at sub-4 pace and just keeps going. This page is worth bookmarking. www.RunnerVisio...
Unbelievable. He looks like he's sprint finishing on every lap. It's like that one guy who sprints off at the start at a ridiculous pace just to get a moment of glory, yet he maintained that ridiculous pace for the entire race!!
Jesus, it is. I mean, 57/58 lap times with almost *no* deviance for the entire race. It's like what the fuck. Most people are justified in feeling proud of running 1 or 2 laps at that speed - but 7.5 is just godlike.
What you do is sprint the first 100m or so then set a pace.
or keep the paste.
This is like how coe broke his own 1000 m record in 1981 , running with speed and endurance, and why only one person has broken his records in the last 39 years.and the person who broke it had a pacemaker up to the last 100 m of the race. as coe did 1and half laps by himself..
@@redd605 Coe was the better run. Had to go around a runner and run alone the last lap. And was not tired. Could have gone quicker. Just went straight on a lap of honour. Two laps of all out sprinting and not even blowing. Not human.
If This Wasn't Recorded,, No One Would Ever Believe It.
This is so true. It's so fast people everywhere would doubt it was correct.
It's a shame that his indoor 7:24.90 wasn't recorded. That was insane as well.
What's incredible is that Wale got super-close to that in February, with his 7:24.98
@@charlesthorndike2702 He is a steeplechaser, and he has more flat speed than water jump technique and barrier clearing technique. He also ran a 7:32 last year so it wasn't so unexpected that he'd break 7:25. And he's still young.
@@charlesthorndike2702 wale should have dived to across the line.
@@timmytheinventor4746 I doubt he'll ever get a chance like that again
Here are Komen's splits.
0400 57.5
0800 1:56.63 (59.13)
1000 2:25.89 (59.26)
1400 3:23.55 (57.66)
1800 4:23.46 (59.91)
2200 5:21.83 (58.37)
2600 6:21.58 (59.75)
3000 7:20.67 (59.09)
God like.
I would be happy to get a sub 65 400m lol
@AstoundingPilot -SW- 4:53 AT 2000M,,,WHAAAAAAAAAAAT ??????? THAT IS LUDICROUSLY INSANE!!!!!!!!!! NOOOÒO WAY !!!!!!!!!
From 800-1000 is actually 29.26
That is sheer class, a record now over 24yrs old, and still nobody looks like beating it.
More than 17years later this record seems to be everlasting.
Gotta be greatest race of all time.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this record never went down.
The human race is growing and change all the time, I will promis you this record will be beat some day. But it's a great great WR, and it will still stand for many years to come.
benjaaboy92 Not really growing, but another amazingly gifted east african runner must be born before this goes down. I'm 35yo and truly wish i could see new record in my lifetime.
Yeah... even Hicham in his prime didn't get even close to that run, being still shy of 2,5 secs
Plus, 3000m is not so much of a concern of the runers nowadays
This can be truly an everlasting WR
Yes, most of kalenjin tribe runners are focusing for full marathon in present time, better chance to get proper incoming. Besides that, best of bests (Hicham, Haile, Kenenisa) has been given serious attempt for this 3000m WR.
Daniel Kipnetich Komen was most gifted middle distance runner of all time, we'll see is anyone like him going to born at 21st century?
I wish but i doubt.
It's amazing to me that the 4 minute mile was a HUGE deal back in the 50's. Fast forward a few decades and this guy runs a 3:55.... and then does it again
Yes, and though it's not as great a record, his 7:58.61 2 Mile proves this was no fluke.
What a runner komen was. This type of talent comes once in a blue moon. We'd be lucky to see this kind of time repeated within the next 50 years.
Still searching. 2023
Well, we had Kiptum
anyone here after Cheptegei tried to break it but only ran 7:33? shows how insane this record is
Yup. This race literally makes me cry when I rewatch it. But Joshua’s 5k record this year did the same thing for me live- I didn’t quite think it would fall either.
I was eagerly waiting. But alas!
Anything below 5k is out of his reach and it dont see him breaking this record at all.
Exactly why I’m here. This record is just as insane as Bolt’s 9.58
Just think an athlete who could potentially break 12:30 and 26:00 but Komen's 7:20 might be still untouchable.
Komen had such a short racing career lasting barely three years, but he is still the only athlete to run under 8minutes for 2 miles, and he did it on two occasions.
No other athlete, however great they may have been, have been able to string two 3-59 miles together.
This 3000m record will be very hard to beat, as well.
Just imagine, asking your pace setters , to set the pace to come through the mile, in around 3min54sec, that's only 11sec slower than the World Record.
That's one magic moment in athletics.
YOMIF KEJELCHA
The 3000 record is the best athletics record. It will last a long time.
@@yohannesnurga4887 Kejelcha beat el Garrouj's indoor 1500 meter record, which is very telling. If someone can do it, it could just be him.
I think the fact that he had such a short career is what helped him make these records. No burnout, and no concern for championships, just came onto the scene in his prime to make a statement and get money for his family.
Its 3 miles
This is arguably the best run that any human has ever run ever. Hot weather, kinda crappy track, and not even on fresh legs. Yet he takes a world record by almost 5 seconds. Truly a remarkable runner
This isn't a crappy track. This is the track meet that produced some of the greatest middle distance performances of all time: the 1000m world record (2:11.96, still standing), the second-fastest 800m of all time (1:41.01, former world record) + multiple 1:41s, a former world record in the mile by Nourredine Morceli (3:44.39, bettered only once by Hicham el Guerrouj and Noah Ngeny), a former world record in the 1500m (3:28.xx; current meet record is 3:26.95, the 7th or 8th fastest of all time), and then of course tis record.
Exactly. The track is not crappy. It is a legendary track. And it was not hot. The conditions were good.
This and TJ record by Jonathan Edwards stick out as the records that just seem almost impossible to beat.
Even though this video was recorded with a potato, it is one of the best I have ever seen
Komen ran 7.20 just 2 days after a 5000m in Berlin in 13.02 were he looked very tired. Komen was the greatest talent ever on 3000/5000m and this record will stand for a long time, maybe for ever.
Remember Bekele ran 12:37 and 26:20 within one Week of eachother!
He also won double cross country world championships that year. There was also the Olympics the same year in 2004.
@@waterproof4403 Yes that's also very impressive. When it comes to titles and number of accomplishments Bekele is far superior to Komen. But when it comes to raw talent on 3000/5000m no one is like Komen.
@@magnuslundberg9675 3000m is Daniel komen for sure. Without any doubt! I don't see that 7:20 being broken for another lifetime.
But for the 5000m, I have to go with Bekele. I'm sure he would have ran sub 12:30 if really went for it. Bekele is somewhat a wasted potential sometimes. Injuries took over him. Plus there were times where he didn't take the sport seriously
@@waterproof4403 Yes injuries destroyed especially Bekeles marathon career, inspite of his 2.01 he never became a dominant marathon runner, his stride wasn't optimal for such long distances. I think Komen was nr 1 of all times in wasted potential. He ran first and foremost for the money to get him and his family out of poverty, and he competed way to much. When he had earned enough money at 22 his motivation faded. His speed at 1500m (3:29) and mile (3.46) also was very impressive. I actually think Komens best 5000m race was in Zürich -96 when he broke Gebresselassie.
Obviously he was using the 5k in Berlin as a warmup routine, for the BIG one, the totally insane outdoor 3000m record
One word. Freak. This is the very end of the talent bell curve right here. Astonishing
I have never heard that term before, but I love it.
Guerrouj never got within 3 seconds, Gebreselassie, Bekele and Morceli never got within 5 seconds, Tergat 8 seconds back! What a record!
@Traviskula. Yes, without question one of the greatest performances in the history of sport. And not only from Dan Komen on the track... The Cram/Hutchings commentary is also one of the greatest performances of all time. "Well, you can hear... 1:56...that is...fast!" "I hope they haven't killed this off" "A 57.6 lap!" [laughter from Hutchings] 3:53.7 or so at four laps..."I've never seen anything like this..." etc. No indeed you haven't and neither have we.
Average speed: 24.54km/h - 15.25miles/h
The greatest mens athletics record of all time
None of the recent dominant runners have got close to bettering this record - El Guerrouj, Gebreselassie, Bekele, Farah have all fallen short, showing what an astonishing run this really was....
"just"? at these levels 7 second per km it's a lot.
bekele's record on 3000km is 7:25.
he ran 7seconds per mile slower on 5km.
bekele, with his records on 10k and 5km, and with his time on 3k, was truly machine
El guerrouj came close running 7:23 on his first and last attempt and he was the only one able to break if he tried again and got better pacing
@@sympaticoo1 It's always fun to speculate. El G was 25 when he ran 7.23 in his first attempt, Komen was only 20 when he ran 7.20 after several attempts, and that was 2 days after a 5000m so he must have been running on tired legs here like the commentator says. El G had 5 more years of hard training and experience of competing then Komen did, when they set their personal bests at 3000m. If Komen had stayed motivated for another 5 years he could probably run around 7.15, but he never did. Komen never avoided El G at 1500m, mile or 3000m, El G avoided Komen at 5000m were Komen had his superior best chance of winning. Just because El G wanted olympic gold at 1500m didn't mean that he couldn't run some occational 5000m, like Morceli did in -94 before his olympic gold in -96. But El G never did until -03 when Komen was long gone. The hard truth is that regardless of circumstances, number of attempts, how close, pacing, age, experience, tired legs, what distance you fucused on, that Komen never defeated El G or that El G had more championships wins, in a pure time trial Komen ran 7.20 and 12.39 and El G ran 7.23 and 12.50. The clock doesen't lie and you are never any better then the times you perform.
25 Years Later...The record Stands🇰🇪
I am breaking it in by end of May 2022.
@@getfitwithtimo well did you?
He's amazing... had the honour of meeting him last year as he was the special guest at my son's school for their sports competition.
This is legendary. Cries for a full HD version to be released. Someone please AI enhance this.
If this doesn't awe you, you don't have the capacity for awe!
Are you going to say Jakob the Norwegian is going to break this too?
3.55 first mile are you kidding beyond amazing...
Kilometer bro
+MR. COMMENTOR 3:55 for a kilometre? That is incredibly slow lol
A mile is much more than a kilometer
+MR. COMMENTOR
2:26 for the first kilometer, bro
This is a super super special individual performance ever establish beyond the ordinary the real big man
His 2000M SPLIT of 4.53 puts him top 30 fastest of all time in 2000M...That's staggering
This really is an incredible run as other people have commented. His avg pace for this 3k was 3mins 56 secs, and interestingly his projected time for 2 miles (if he'd continued for another 218 metres would have been approximately 7 minutes 52/ 53 which is well inside his own 2 mile outdoor WR of 7:58:61
This is his greatest race ever and record lasts forever. Those under 8 minutes 2 mile runs has done when he had his regular days. Day of this 3000m run was really special.
El G, Haile, Bekele...none of em could even sniff this record. I think it's going to be a long time till this one was broken.
Too bad Komen quit, dude was one hell of an insane talent.
Bekele's pace for his 5k WR was 4:03 per mile, if he had focused on this distance, it might have been possible to defeat komen, but he didnt, so we can just accept both of them as insane runners
@@redalien75 From Wikipedia: Kenenisa Bekele believes that breaking Komen's record is only "possible on a special day if the pace is good and if everything else also is perfect.
@@SqueekyClean976 Bekele is a class act.
Bekele's 3000m pb is 7:25 and he just kicked the last 1000m, went through 2000m quite comfortable
@@SqueekyClean976 Kenenisa was referring to the 2 mile record. Insane
The longevity of a world record is well captured by the quality of the video recording it.
one of the greatest runs of all time
This record by Daniel Komen is now 24 years old - one of the longest records in the history of men's running.
27 years and still counting on this WR.
Did anyone notice Komen went through 2000m in 4:53 and kept the pace up? Unbelievable !!
I don't believe another runner (EL G, Aouita, Bekele) has come within 4 seconds of this time.
Arguably the best track run ever by a human. Well done Daniel Komen.
some records will outlast the athlete who made them , this is one of them.
4:07 is when the commentator starts laughing at the 800 pace
One of the most legendary WRs in athletics history.
It will be interesting to see how close Jacob, Jakob, Cheptegei, Barega, Wale and Girma cant get to this world record (and the 2 Mile WR)
@mulonzee877 athletes today have a huge advantage with the wavelights and stuff. Thats how bekeles records were broken.
@@waterproof4403 they have run many other impressive runs without wave lights just accept Cheptegei broke the record
@@henryhobert5761 he didn't break the record. He was handed the WR. Like I said it's already too late for him he will never be as good as Bekele

I remember this race, I was putting my legos in my mouth when my mum screamed at the telly. Good ol' times 😂
The 3000m event is quite underrated. This guy went several seconds faster than any other legend ever, like Gebrselassie, Bekele, Farah, El Guerrouj, Cheptegei. None of those legends could even touch that record. Though, I think Ingebrigtsen WILL be the one to break this record, especially considering his super dominant 2 miler WR. His 3000m split in that run was 7:23
Greatest track world record of all time
I agree. Same with Kenenisa 5000m and 10000m but sadly they got broken with the help of technology. I hope Komens record will always stand
28 years Later.. Still Standing 🇰🇪
he was just totally fearless, that is the way you have to feel and be if you want to reach your personal goal
this is kenya baby no one is going to beat this world record.
All records get broken. This one is special, and therefore will take longer. Making it more difficult than the time is the fact that the distance is uncommon. There are fewer opportunities in the 3,000.

Jakob made of steel confirmed
I'd say this is an impossible record. I can't see it being broken by a human. And I say this one week after Cheptegei broke Bekele's 5000m WR.

People say that Usain Bolts records (100m and 200m) will stand for a long time... but I say Komens 3000m record will stand for even longer. Imagine beating Morcelis best time by over 4 seconds. It's insane !
His indoor record was broken recently but I still don't see this one falling - it's still another 3 seconds
I came here by Chepteguei. Amazing Komen, His record won't be broken at least for The next 5 years.
Please...try the next decades
Was awesome seeing his fellow Kenyan pace makers encouraging him at the end as they realised what he was about to achieve
Cheptegei going after the record in Ostrava tomorrow...19 May 2021
This record is like the records on the 100m(for both gender) - nearly impossible to break
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the only man that can break this record. He will do it in the end of august 2024!
Amazing run 🏃♂️ by Daniel Koman 👏 awesome
February 2021, this record will not be broken :DD
This is the stiffest world record on the books. That no one has gotten close is a testament to how magical a race this really was!
I watch this every once in a while. My God. Think if he kept going another half a lap. WR for 2 miles would be close to 7:50. Someone will break this someday but this is amazing for 1996.
In my world, this is the greatest running record!
I wanted to see more of the medal ceremony. Cut away too soon.
he may be wrong for the number of people now, with Amos and Rudisha (and others?), but the 800m requires so much training in both the sprint and distance worlds. 3ks, 5ks and 10ks are all much much harder, but the 800m simply is a race that's very very difficult to go lower than even 1:43 in. Look at how many people have broken 3:33(?), a comparable time in the 15 to the 8.
😂😂You know this race was just insane when the commentators keep laughing at the splits 😅
@KingLiopleurodon Absolutely correct. You know its the monster world record because El Guerrouj, Bekele and Gebresalassie couldn't get close to it and it was within their ranges. Especially Guerrouj and Bekele, the only reason they hadn't beaten it is because it is TOO FAST even for their standards
I know! He's the only man to break 8 minutes in the 2 mile and the video's NOT ON UA-cam!!!
IT IS NOW !!!!!!
He was literally flying
The Norwegian big head can only bow down to the great Danielle Komen and his 26 years old World Record.
Just imagine this: He is running at 25km/h speed for 7 Minutes.. Eluid is running at 21km/h for 2 hours.. they are insane
Man that really is a remarkable run
I would be happy with one 59 second lap but 7.5 in a row is just ridiculous. My average pace is like 3:40 pace per km for a 3k this man ran a 2:25 that would be a good 800 time for me.😅
Daniel Komen the great!
Daniel KOMEN at the peak of his legendary powers! There is a reason why his nickname is Mount Everest!!! 👍🏾🇰🇪
That is insane!! He went into a 3,000m race in sprint mode.
The world will end before anyone touches this record that is how incredible it is.
He looked very “untroubled “ all the way
And it still stands today. It withstood Joshua Cheptegei. The greatest world record ever (this + his 2 mile)
I remember thinking "this young KENYAN is SUPERHUMAN, I was RIGHT!!!@@!!!!! BLESS you DANIEL KOMEN!!!!!!!!
the second Pacer is awesome he must be the world class runner himself to run those times over 2000 meters. was his Name John kosgei (not sure I heard correctly)? never heard his name
YES absolutely FANTASTIC TIME AT 2000 METRES!!!!!!!!!!
@YiftertheShifter1 First I would just like to say that I am impressed that you're not so naive anymore compared to one or two years ago. Reminds me a lot of myself when I was a bit younger when I still believed guys like Aouita and Morceli were clean.
I guess the problem I have with that whole era from around 91-05 was the depth all across the board. No names running 3:30 and guys like El G that were able to run 3:27-28 week in week out looking fresh as a daisy seconds after finishing a race.
Fresh as a daisy after the race? All the champions look like that after winning medals and/or setting records. Ever hear the phrase "The easiest races are your BEST races"? It is often true, and not just for the elite, but for all levels of talent.
@7agneskickingbird7 Yes, it does raise many questions, but you also have to consider that those who set the standards in the '90s pretty much all retired/ moved on at around 2005 (i.e. Guerrouj retires; Geb moves to the roads, but sets more WRs there; Lagat's 1500m abilities decline; Kipketer retires). There are a lot of factors that determine performance in distance running, and EPO/ other drug use could be one of them, though we'll never know for sure.
I've been studying this to try and improve my 3000m and one thing I've noticed is that the pace seems to be quite stable. I've always thought that you were supposed to increase speed all the way through the run. My personal best is 10.38 from about 6 mounths back. I'm a heavy runner at 90 kg and 187cm. maby trying to set the pace from start to finish will improve my personal best. any thoughts?
9 Years later commenting --- you deserved a comment. Your time to weight ration is exceptional.
Kenenisa Bekele was only 6 sec from this World record.. But a Great Great performance by Daniel Komen here. Hero!!
6 seconds is a lifetime in athletics my friend. But, it's a good try.
benjaaboy92 "only" Sorry, my friend, but you know nothing about athletics.
+frank white i know, not a lifetime, but close too it. ;) If Bekele have had a rabbit to hold the pace up, he could have get closer to this WR, no doubt.. Anyway, Hicham, Haile and Bekele have all tried to break this WR, but this WR is just UNREAL.!!
+waterwong12 I know alot more than you waterboy. Go get me a drink.
+benjaaboy92 6 seconds is a huge margin

A shame though it may be that we can't see the 2 mile record, I think this is regarded as a more impressive record anyway.
The record is there to stay.Cheptegei tried but missed by 13 seconds.
Aged only 20 at the time he could have achieved so much more what a talent.
It is very hard to describe in words what this record means!
Now we have the situation where they can keep samples for years (only intro in 2008) and they have more sensitive tests which can detect subtle changes in oxygen absorption. This came in around 2006, round about the time when the performances (times) in the 1500 and above distances, became slower, returning to pre 1994 levels. For many years now, UK athletes have had to declare their whereabouts every day of the year in order to be tested.
Without a doubt the best running world record to date.
No one has even got close after almost 26 years.
Closest to this time currently is Yomif Kejelcha last year with a 7:26.25
Sure it will be broken someday but this record will definitely last for the next decade or two I believe or perhaps even more.
No one has got gotten close to Koch's 400 in the last 38 years.
@@user-ui6kv2np8i true that wr is gonna take even longer time for anyone to break someday. Right now it looks like J. Ingebrigtsen has a good shot at breaking komens 3000m outdoor wr
to think if he beat the world record of 7:25 the week before we probably wouldn't have got this impossible run. Guerrouj would probably hold the record of 7:23
He is a legend
Likely the toughest WR in Men's distance running.
Legend
This guy is a machine!
Some big names in the late 90's appeared from nowhere and had a rapid meteoric rise, followed by an equally rapid decline at an early age. The advances in the world record for distances from 1500m upwards improved at a markedly increased exponential rate to the underlying historical progression projections. That is far more suspicious career path. In the last 4 seasons 3:30 has been broken only 3 times (with no sub 3:29s), 7:30 ten times (4 by Bekele & 2 by his bro), 12:50 once & 26:50 seven.
Coe himself was the first athlete to address the IOC congress in 81 calling for a lifetime ban for anyone caught taking PEDs. Moreover, he commissioned a paper, in conjunction with Lord Moynihan, during his time as President of the Sports Council to ban blood doping in 1986, when he was still competing.
