    Life of Saint Nicolas of Japan (1836 -1912).
    St. Nicholas is recognized as a model missionary because he fully immersed himself in Japanese life and learned the language, religion, customs, and culture of Japan in his effort to get close to the people. He also translated many scriptural, liturgical, and theological texts into Japanese. His memory is celebrated on February 3 or February 16 (old calendar).

    I was a Buddhist renunciate practicing at one of the places father seraphim rose purportedly did before he converted.
    Of every religion in Japan the Buddhists are most likely to convert. Their monastic discipline, apart from their wrong belief, is wholeheartedly an honest attempt at spiritual asceticism that is similar in so many ways to christian monastics. All they need is to know Christ. God bless saint Nikolai and may he pray to God for us all!

      It’s such a shame Orthodoxy didn’t get to Japan first. At the very least, we were no more a threat to Japanese sovereignty than, say, Saint Patrick was to Irish sovereignty. Jesuits and Calvinists were INTRINSICALLY linked to European colonialism, by contrast. They could not operate truly independently, even if they wanted to. Orthodox Missionaries CAN.

    I was stationed in Japan for most of my military career, and took up Japanese martial arts for over 30 years. I learned to speak Japanese fluently, as well as read and write with some proficiency. All Japanese martial arts have an element of religion in them. There is always a kamiza or kamidana, where the “god” of the dojo (school) resides. You have to bow to this deity at the start and finish of practice. In aikido, they deify Ueshiba Morihei, the founder of aikido. So, if you are an Orthodox Christian, please think about this. I no longer practice as I used to. And I no longer bow to false deities.

    • @theturtwig50
      @theturtwig50 4 роки тому +14

      Kami can sometimes be seen as a spirit, but I understand what you mean completely. Bowing isn't always an act of worship in Asia, but a sign of disciple and lowering the ego. Still, it doesn't mean you have to bow to something you consider a diety.

    • @JoshJ12
      @JoshJ12 2 роки тому +5

      It is also similar to Kalaripayattu the oldest martial art. The Thoma Christians of Kerala used Kalaripayattu with Christ instead of the Dravidian gods.

    • @P.Whitestrake
      @P.Whitestrake Рік тому +7

      For aikido, they're not deify Ueshiba-sensei. It's more like showing great respect towards him as the founder of aikido. Bowing doesn't mean worshiping. Bowing is very common in Eastern Asia as a sign of respect. Kids bow to adults & elders, for example. Do those kids worship those adults & elders they're bowing to? Of course not. Itls their way to show respect.
      I worked & lived in Asian countries for several years. I learned karate, taekwondo, aikido, & silat. I'm still an Orthodox Christian & my faith has never been shaken by Asian martial arts. Even when I pray before I begun my training, I prayed to God in the name of The Father, The Son, & The Holy Spirit.
      It's fine to learn aikido or other Asian martial arts to discipline yourself & keep your body healthy. Don't worry about conflating martial arts with Orthodoxy. It has nothing to do with each other. I haven't found any Asian martial arts that force your to follow certain religion/belief.

      @@P.Whitestrake I practice kendo and I’m an Orthodox Christian too. I understand that it is scandalous for some and we do need to be patient with those who immediately think it’s the same as yoga etc.
      I think there are a lot of differences between “martial arts” so it is important to be discerning. I think the apprehension comes from a good place.
      Kendo in its essence is very much a sport now. More traditional dojo may have some components that are religious in nature, but they are a vague nod to the cultural context that it was born. I don’t train at those places anyway.
      Many sword schools that bore iaido etc claimed specific religious lineages to give their school more prestige, but it wasn’t organic to the art itself. Provided that your training is not more important than your parish commitments, and that you talk to your spiritual father, then it definitely can help you become braver and be more courageous in your walk with Christ.

      A pity we didn’t get there first. With no colonial imperial baggage to spook Tokugawa, (who cared FAR more about secular sovereignty than Shintoism), we would have gone much further with far less horrible persecution. Not none, but horrors as depicted in “The Silence” would have been avoided.
      Liam Neison’s character, while explaining to his former protégé why he apostatized, said “This land is a SWAMP in which the seed of the church cannot take root!”
      Turns out he simply needed a hardier and wilder breed of seed than the increasingly sickly strain Rome produced.

    They say Japan was made by a sword.
    They say the old gods dipped a coral blade into the ocean, and when they pulled it out four perfect drops fell back into the sea, and those drops became the islands of Japan.
    I say, Japan was made by a handful of brave men.
    Warriors, willing to give their lives for what seems to have become a forgotten word: honor.

    Muy santo y arduo trabajo de San Nicolás en Japón... Pero de ninguna manera se compara con el sufrimiento de los japoneses nativos que, desde el siglo XVII comenzaron a vivir el cristianismo según la iglesia romana y mantuvieron su fe sobre toda persecución como kakure kirishitan🤔🤔🤔🤔

    Remember even the Demons n Devil knows who Christ is... So remember to keep your faith, by living in truth.. Don't go against words of God, such as lgbqt+ acceptance, that some fallen Christains is falling for.. Also do not go against God, n siding n condoning what Hamas has done to Israel by kililng, kidnapping n rapping Israel.. As much as God see us as his children, he has not forgottenthe promise to Abraham, Issac n Jacob or Israel..

    To me, Christainity can be Christainity whether Evangilcal to Orthodox. But to me, it is about Jesus being worship as God, going by faith in God's word with as much God gives you to understand the truth of it, and standing on God's side.. Why ? Because not everyone has great dedication to Christ.. They say some bearly make it to God's eternity with him, bearlly - the skin of their teeth.. Yet they were chosen by God.. So don't go nutty against people that is not as dedicated as other, if God gets them in, who are we to judge ? ? Plus to me without Jesus being worshipped and acknowledge as God, then it's not Christanity.. That is the big difference between Jews that have not come to their Messiah Jesus, they don't see Jesus as God.. Same with Muslims.. However they know still him as Truth.. Truth is another name for Christ.. Jesus said he is the Truth.. So for non-Christians, if they go by the truth that God has given them, they are worshiping Jesus, without knowing it.. The conscience is like the balancing line, that works with the Truth - depending on what is given to you... For example, you know based on what you know, your conscience will tell you of good n evil.. If you go by the truth, you will listen to side of good, but if keep going against it, you go on the side of lies or the evil.. You conscience is like the fruit of tree of good and evil - there to ask what will you eat.. Thus, no one goes to the Father, God, without Truth.. Even if you say, you know Christ without truth, you like the demons and devil.. Even they know who Chrsit is, yet they lie n deceive and no truth is in them.. Most Christains don't realize, Jesus he is the truth, means you have to have a conscience that works with the truth given to you.. I say truth given to you, because some things are given to some, but not to others.. All is judged by what is given to them, that don't just include stuff but also knowledge and understanding.. That is why there is no redemption for Angels, the amount of seeing and understanding of the majesty of God in heaven, should have been enough for them, to not rebel like Satan n other fallen angels.. We as humans, is not given the sight or understanding of Heaven, thus given redemption options..
