Sadly, a hiker was killed by a Grizzly Bear at Denali National Park in Alaska. It is the parks first death by bear since officially becoming a safe haven for wildlife in 1917. The bear had to be put down for public safety since it now was a man eater.
Rangers found the tourist camera and determined he spent over 8 minutes near the bear at a range of 50 yards. Park rules at Denali ask you to be 300 yards to 1/4 mile away from bears and at Yellowstone they state 100 yards. Ask anyone who visits or works at these parks and they will tell you they see people brake those rules daily for bear, moose, elk and other wildlife. Do people think they can out run a 30mph charging bear? Do they think they will get that perfect picture, not knowing the footage they watch on nature shows are taken with huge lenses, and sometimes even staged with captive animals?
Please enjoy nature, but be careful out there. For yourself, for the wildlife, and for everyone else that plans on visiting these amazing areas.
    Thanks.

Please be safe in bear country. PLEASE REMEMBER while we hike in their land, carry BEAR SPRAY!
Bear spray is 99% effective, while hang guns are around 80% and long guns around 70%. Multiple reasons why guns aren't the best option. Remember bear, as well s all animal attacks, are very-very rare, so enjoy nature. Hiking in groups of 2 or more and making yourself known will also keep the bears at a safe viewing distance. Thank you for watching Brian's Art for Animals.

Bear Spray doesn’t always work either. Wind, and rain can make it ineffective. Some bears have been shown to be unaffected. Bear spray doesn’t disable the animal. The only thing that can truly stop a bear attack is a firearm and that person properly trained to use one. A dead bear can’t kill. The other problem. What if your allergic to bear spray. I am! The bear spray would kill me, before the bear ever does.

This is so important. I was at Rocky Mountain National Park a few months ago (winter 2021) and myself and my family pulled over to observe a Mother Moose and her calf. She was about 100 yards off the road. We rolled down the windows and sat quietly, observing but being ready to leave. Just then 2 cars pulled up next to us- a family with small children and an older couple. They ALL parked and got out and started WALKING TOWARD the Moose. One woman got within 40 feet to stop and take pictures- meanwhile ruining the view for everyone else. They all started closing distance on her and the moose started getting agitated and I was thinking WTF??? Don’t people know not to ever approach wildlife like this?? I was always taught that it’s a given. But no, Karen needed her pictures to post on Facebook.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 4 роки тому +8

Well, in fairness, a bear is also fresh meat. Sometimes you can stay a respectful distance away, and those who think you can are just as foolish as those who intentionally get too close.
Chances are that when you see any predator bear, it has already seen or smelled you. But sometime conditions mean you can suddenly be right on top of a bear and both of you are surprised. If this bear happens to have cubs, you could be considered a threat, and the bear will attack.
And a one Alaskan Ranger said, "One bear in twenty-five is insane." It's true, get too close to that twenty-fifth bear, even by accident, and you will probably be attacked.
But I don't go into bear country, ever, without means to protect myself. I don't want to kill a bear, but I'm a bit more in favor of killing a bear than I am of a bear killing me.

If a bear attacks and kills a person it immediately receives a death sentence. It will be tracked and killed asap. I know how much everyone loves our wild animals. You can show your love better by keeping your distance and allow them to continue to be wild animals, and not a single cute photo before their death.

Been an avid outdoors person all my life and have encountered all kinds of wildlife. It makes me furious to see visitors to wildlife parks rolling down their car windows - with their kids in the back seat!!! - and feeding bears, which can strip your car doors off like opening a can of spam.
I've seen people having their kids hand feeding deer and elk, which can split your skull with a hoof strike, calling "hey, kitty kitty" and throwing lunch meat to a cougar.
People just don't use the good sense God gave them. Then, when there is an attack, someone gets maimed or killed and the animal gets put down for doing what comes naturally to them.
PLEASE! STAY IN YOUR CARS with the windows rolled up, don't feed the animals and make nuisances of yourselves. Keep a respectful distance, enjoy the view and always remember - a wild animal is a WILD animal.

Even after multiple warnings regarding the bison in Yellowstone via UA-cam and postings in the park, I'll be damned if you don't see or hear of another incident because people just will not pay attention. That once-in-a-lifetime shot of a wild animal 5 feet behind you may be exactly that because you may never get the opportunity again.

+Elsa I know how you feel. The first instinct is, "OMG... he KILLED it!!!", but you don't know the circumstances. Sometimes, particularly with large predators, it is unavoidable.
Bears can be very determined and, if they decide you have something they want or decide you are lunch, simple things like doors and windows on your house are not going to stop them. I've seen black bears rip open car doors and slap open sturdy metal ice chests like they were Chinese take-out cartons.
Seeing one coming at you on your own front porch is bound to be a very bracing experience. We have two kids, pets and livestock. I would very likely have shot it, too... then cried my eyes out.

Humans are #1 on the food chain until you start hoofing it into bear country. I'm amazed after 30 year's to keep hearing about multiple people being mauled to death or disfigured every year. I spent 16 years in rural Alaska. I've never been charged by a bear, but I've known others that have. I have been charged by more than one Moose, and yes, it is terrifying. A Good tip, don't play dead with a Moose. He will kick you until you are dead. Get a stick, hopefully you have a hiking stick, raise it high waving it around while yelling your head off. If it looks big/tall, they will usually turn and run.
Play dead with a Griz, drop, curl up, protecting your head and gut area.
A Black Bear, Do Not Play Dead! You're best defense is waving your arms high, make yourself as big as you can, and yell and scream as loud as you can. Make a LOT of noise.
Or you can do my favorite thing to do. Carry a BIG GUN with a LOT of power!
But I'll tell you one thing, most locals are much more afraid of Moose than Bears. No matter if you follow the "rules", Moose will go after you much sooner, and more likely than a Bear.
If you're traveling by foot in Bear Country, backpacking or whatever... It's a really good idea to carry a shotgun/Bear Gun, with enough power to kill it. Otherwise, you will just piss them off, and it will hurt a lot worse before you're dead, than if the bear just killed you outright.
If you're in country with Wild Animals, BE AWARE AT ALL TIMES OF WHAT IS AROUND YOU.

Some people just don't realize how quickly quadrupeds can close the gap between them. These bears, although they look it at time, are not lumbering, heavy-footed blobs of protoplasm. The very same people who become victims of provoked bear attacks wouldn't come close to a rattlesnake or copperhead to take a similar up-close shot. So, I reckon it is a matter of underestimating, or being completely ignorant of a bear's agility.

Fortunately, it's not always the case. A photographer from my home town was killed by a sow grizzly in Glacier Park after he ignored multiple warnings from the bear, and continued to follow her and two cubs. She eventually had enough, and attacked. Upon evaluating the photos in the camera, the parks folks decided that the bear acted defensively. They closed that section of the park for a while, but took no action against the bear.
It's important to note that she did NOT feed on him. She attacked him to neutralize what she perceived as a threat. Assertions that she is now a "man-eater" are uninformed. However, I would agree that once a bear makes a deliberate predatory attack on humans and sees them as a food source, the likelihood of future attacks is certainly higher.
I live not far from Seattle, and see bears often. I saw one bear in my yard twice yesterday in the middle of the day. That's disturbing. The local bears are becoming habituated to trash and losing their fear of people. That's never good.

I was naked cuz when it's your life you better move as is. we scampered down towards the stream and his between some boulders. thank God for theoon but almost froze to death. At first light my best friend went up to check things out while I stayed with the women. He was in long johns don't ask about the women! when he came back with a bird whistle letting us know it was o.k. to emerge we saw a completely decimated camp. This griz smashed and ripped the place apart
he even opened up a can of baked beans by crushing the can
tire the tent to shreds. One of my boots was so chewed on it couldn't be used and never found the other. we just got what we could and hiked out for 36 hours. wrapped my feet in tattered clothes for shoes. we didn't have a firearm so we were a little scared but we made it out. I remembered hearing his grunts and all the noise he made the nite of the encounter. Had we stayed in the tent I think we would of been done for. My buddy kept a cool and the women were awesome. He's a Chippewa indian and had spent his early youth with nature. super mellow brother. I have nothing but respect for mother nature and her creations. Bears are at the apex of the food chain cuz like he said all they like to do is eat sleep shit reproduce and do it again. Don't ever think bears aren't curious opportunistic animals with a lot of weight. they are unpredictable by nature and will eat just about anything. in reality they're land sharks and I would imagine humans taste like pigs especially the fat ones. so if you see one keep it in your mind and stay away cuz if they want you for whatever reason you don't have a chance without a firearm unless your a die-hard Aborigine of real mountain man. curiosity killed the cat and he had nine lives. your odds suck. that goes for buffalo, mountain lions elk deer and the like. Had a nasty experience with gators and snakes too. All mother nature requires is respect something few humans seem to have any more but the simple ones

All food/garbage has to be in a tree hang at least 20 feet away, and do not go into your tent with clothing that you might have dripped food on, also, toothpaste, tums, anything that would tempt a bear, do not take it into your tent! Also, get trained, have bear spray, but know how to use it:)

I went tracking grizzlies in Glacier in 1976. Powerful animals, they do not share nor play well with others. A Ranger and a biologist were attacked 3 days earlier. We should do all we can to protect these majestic creatures from encounters with humans. Such encounters usually end badly for the bear. I think you are right about city folk running out with their iPhones. You have probably sat in hiding for hours behind a tripod waiting to get a “close-up” from 100 yards. Most people don’t understand the patience, the equipment, and the prep (library and zoo) that it takes to get a Nat Geo shot.

In my opinion it shouldn’t be that way, I’m from the old school of thought I know but grizzlies have been on the endangered species list and it’s taken them more than 50 years of being on the endangered species list for recovery! Just because you can hunt them doesn’t mean you should! Now hunting them with a camera is okay but respect the distance from them so we don’t have to kill them for humans mistakes!

Actually grizzlies were never on the endangered list. They were placed on the threatened (not endangered) list for just the lower 48 in 1975. In 1975, the grizzly population in the Yellowstone Ecosystem was around 130, with those numbers well over 700 today. Studies were performed at the time that identified the Yellowstone Ecosystem could support 400 grizzlies without negatively impacting their population, and equally as important other populations such as deer, elk, moose, etc. Once the number reached 400 the grizzly was to be delisted from the threatened status. This goal was realized around the year 2000. Since then, the population was allowed to almost double, which began to threaten not just the grizzly, but also numerous other species including elk, moose, deer, the newly reintroduced wolves, etc. The threatened status has changed multiple times since 2007 with 2017 delisting them once again. In 2018 the emotional outcry of many activist organizations forced legal action and the court did overrule it. This is even when presented with factual information , even when numerous years of scientific study showed it would have a negative impact on the very animals these groups wanted to protect.

Today there are close to 60,000 grizzlies in North America. The population of grizzlies in North America has always been strong and in no way was ever endangered.

Was that just to scare me, or was there really a panther? Whether they made it up or not, i knew to get in the house, way before dark, just in case.

I thought at the start he said "a few days ago I was killed by a grizzly bear" I was like "then how are you alive now"

As a photographer not willing to die like a southern California hippie, I carry both bear spray and a Glock 10mm with bear rounds. My biggest fear is coming around a sharp corner only to be face to face with a momma griz with Cubs. There is only one way out of that situation alive and it's not to sing pretty songs to it like the hippy grizzly man.

I think 300 yards is far too close.
When I am photographing wildlife, I prefer to be seven parsecs away.
Only a bear in a faster-than-light spacecraft can charge me.

Why so many thumbs down? My guess? Individuals who've never been in true contact w/ the wild. They're trying to apply politically correct policies to animals. You're video is fantastic and a needed touch on reality. The pricks who thumbs down need to either work through their issues constructively or get eaten by a bear ;-)

"They're trying to apply politically correct policies to animals" ...? what does this mean?

No offense intended. The intention of my statement was to cause a reaction on your part not in a manipulative way but instead on one more concerned w/ self preservation. The creator of this content is trying to WARN you.
Bears are extraordinaryl beautiful animals but their beauty must be appreciated from a distance.
Don't be the next Timothy Treadwell (nor the unfortunate woman who trusted his stupidity).. Be cautious and stick to your HUMAN instincts otherwise you're subject to those of the bear. Does that make sense?

I wasn't offended, i was just asking, as I didn't understand your statement. IMO the problem is lack of realistic wildlife education in the public. Also all this misnamed "reality TV" where idiots are constantly interfering with wildlife. I have worked with wildlife, I appreciate the issues. Bears seldom harm humans, relative to the number of opportunities they have. But they do kill people at times. Timothy Treadwell was an idiot who kept pushing the envelope to see what would happen. He got himself and his poor girlfriend killed. He also got the attacker bear killed (assuming the attack was due to Treadwell pressuring the bear in its territory). 3 deaths, his fault.

Yeah, the politically correct thing to do is to NOT do something stupid that will get you and the animal killed. We politically correct people are NOT in favor of having wildlife killed because of human stupidity. Might want to rethink your choice of words ...

I gave a "thumbs down" simply because the title implied that we would see the last footage of the charging bear so we could see the bear behavior immediately before the charge. But no! The STUPID IDIOT procedes to give a ridiculous lesson on hugging trees and "respecting " an animal that would as soon eat you as look at you. If we are stupid enough to protect these mankillers we should be STUPID enough to live with people getting eaten by a bear.! This is ALL true!!

Very valuable information, particularly about the huge lenses that are used or staged scenes on these nature shows. I don’t think a lot of people realize that. Like you said, they think someone actually got up that close to take the pic. Thanks for making this video. You never know, you might have saved some lives.

thanks..yes wildlife shows are just that many times. Shows. Using footage from captive animals, old stock footage, filming multiple animals to tell a single animals story, and of course using equipment the average person can't afford at all. So this is why we shouldn't even try to recreate what we see on tv by getting too close.
