Just think what that would have sounded like in a tightly, acoustic controlled studio with 40 re-takes and endless overdubs under the magical hands and ears of a master audio engineer . . . That's how the 'guitar gods' get their sound. Josh sits cross-legged on the roof in one take with a single mic in the open air. Oh yeah . . . he also plays banjo, mandolin, bass, ukulele, and fiddle. He sings. He writes. He composes. He takes the back seat and accompanies others. He shares thru instruction. Just wow!
And now ladies and gentlemen, we resume with our regularly scheduled programming. Good to see you back man, loved the album, looking forward to more covers/rearrangements!
Whenever people say "What isn't Josh good at?", they usually mean in the form of instruments, but judging by the description, he's also a good grandson!
@@jsguy100 I spent at least half a day googling and watching frame by frame a few months ago. Was determined to figure it out. Enjoyed watching the video a hundred times too. LOL
Stunned. Astonished. Speechless. I thought, many years ago, that all the gods of the guitar had been identified. I could hardly have been more wrong. Technically flawless. Very much more to the point, musically a limitless delight. And such pleasure taken. Left reeling in wonder. What a supreme achievement..
It is scary good. Technically a wonder. But simultaneously over-flowing with music and imagination. This is talent of an order denied to us mere mortals. You can only look on open-mouthed.
Josh, perhaps I’m stating the obvious but you’re one of the best out there. The deep respect you have for musical tradition and technique shines through every note.
Are you kidding me??? you have an old soul Josh! Reverend Gary, Jorma, Dave Van Ronk, Bromberg and the like would be happy that there are young folks like you carrying on the piedmont tradition. Very, very well done!
When you arrive very tired at home 'cause your day sucks and in the middle of the song you starting to smile but you don't know why. That's true art ladies and gentleman. Greetings from Spain.
Morris Rowell's restoration of your 65 Harmony Guitar shows through on this performance as well. You both do excellent work. Congrats as well Josh, for gaining over a half a million subscribers.
@@lazydog1964 Hug gratefully received! This country is in dire need of a Texas-sized dose of self-deprecating humor. You keep dishing it out, ok? Going to listen to Josh again, and will try to focus on the music and not the hairy microphone!
Lorraine Liberti You are such a sweetheart and yes ma’am things today are beyond bizarre at the least and I’m going to send Josh a bid for that Mic hair, i have the perfect spot for it right above my 1 eyebrow on the left because the on the right eyebrow i just let it grow and comb it back WAY BACK.. :)
I used to have an old 78 rpm record of "The New St. Louis Blues" by Ted Williams and his band. Same tune! Over the years, I lost that disc. But...a couple of years ago I found it and the entire Ted Williams "album" of 4 78 rpm dics with original packaging. Now my old Victrola is happy. Great job on this tune by the way! Love it.
OH MY!! Not only is this one of my favorite pieces, since before I learned to play any music, but I've been picking banjo, guitar, fiddle & cello for over 50 years, listening to the likes of Stefan Grossman, Atkins, Watson, Kottke, Williams, etc., etc., your version, Josh, is by far my favorite rendition. All hats off!
Josh - how long does it take to learn something like this before you're ready to record? Not a sour note, on your first take? For real? An absolute legend you are.
I'd reckon he has to spend 8-10 hours practicing the piece after it has been learned in order to nail it like this. Unless he's just super-human, which he might be. This would take me like 40 hours hahaha.
I guess it takes him a fair amount of practice but nothing crazy since he's been kicking ass for years. But this piece, no matter your skill, seems quite complex to learn and master
One of my favourite songs performed by my favourite artist. I’ve loved this song since I was a kid. My father had various versions even back to Ethel Waters and Bessie Smith which enthralled me all those year ago. A perfect rendition of a perfect song. Well done Sir.
Wow ! That Harmony sounds great ! I remember how cheap they were in the 60's ( I started plying guitar in 1963 at age 15 ). Harmony guitars were played until you could save up the money for a Gibson or Martin ! I remember the Harmony Sovereign selling for $89.95 . My first guitar was out of a Speigal catalog for $21.95 . Yes , it REALLY sucked ! Nice to see you playing a Harmony !
This guy is blessed with an embarrassment of talent and ability. I play a little guitar and know that Josh is gifted and I msure has put in a lot of work to be as good as he is. That said it looks like it comes easy to him. What comes easy to his listeners is the enjoyment and fun just listening to the wide range of songs and musical performances that are always superb.
As a kid, that was one of our favourite 78 records (google it Millenials! ;) ). I think you missed going up to the 4th a few times, but.... wow, magical!

Check out his new album, Public Life. Might be exactly what you’re looking for.
All I gotta say is thank goodness for this platform so we can enjoy "unknowns" such as Josh...but of course now he's not unknown anymore!

Don Morgan Josh is an over-achiever.
If this isn't the Sultans of Swing sweater
I wonder if Josh enjoys the fact that some of his fans can remember this kind of detail. Must be flattering!
you know it will be a good one, if the sweater is on
@@kitkovsky Just what I was thinking! Although, to be fair, you know it'll be a good one... if Josh plays it.
Thanks, what a great way to start my day.God bless

props for the Harmony. Lovely old girl.
When the word 'virtuoso' is an understatement. It's just incredible what he can do with a guitar.

It IS a Harmony! The body looks like an old Martin 000.
H162. Beautiful.

The saddest thing about this entire video is that the Microphone has 10 times more hair then i do, NOW THATS BLUES :(
