Good stuff. After Mutt Lange produced "High and Dry" (A great album), he really leaned into their AC/DC-esque sound but did with them what I think he wanted to do with AC/DC after "For Those About to Rock" (another great album). I'm sure Angus and Malcolm fought tooth and nail and was why Mutt found more time on this hands and creative control with Def Leppard. Mutt is quite an accomplished musician, songwriter, arranger, and producer, and that wasn't lost in these albums. "High and Dry" is an epic album in its own right with songs like "High and Dry (Saturday Night)", "On Through the Night", and "Bringing on the Heartbreak". But it's no coincidence that their sound was very close to the raw, untamed offerings of AC/DC. Sticking with Joe Elliott's strong tenor voice, Mutt knew the keys of A and E were going to be the staple of Leppard's set list. Heck, even the iconic "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is in C#m, borrowing heavily from both A and E. They knew how to craft great tunes and their concerts are still pretty epic. Joe had the appeal to bring the ladies and when they added Collen, all bets were off. The stadiums were packed with rockers of all kinds, and whether people love or don't Def Leppard, they brought rock to the masses in a time when people had declared rock a dead genre.
So just a couple of helpful bits... on the first one: use your first and second fingers to play the first two cords, then use your ring or pinky to add the C on the 5th fret. An alternate way to play photograph which I think adds a little more umph because it's based on an E power chord on the 5th string 7th fret. With your first finger bar the two middle strings at the 7th fret... think of this as your anchor. Later in the song, you can slide it down to play an open A with it. With the anchor in place let's play the riff... bar the same two middle strings on the 9th with your ring finger. This is the lower half of the E power chord I was talking about. As a matter of fact, if you want a more bassier sound, you can have the anchor finger include the E (5th string on 7th fret) and/or the open E 6th string. The second chord requires that you rock that ring finger up to just hold the 4th string on the 9th and add the middle finger to the 3rd string 8th fret. The third chord is made by just moving that ring finger down to the 3rd string on the 9th fret. The fourth chord is to just play that anchor (bared 3rd and 4th strings on the 7th) . I also like to add 2nd string 10th fret with my pinky. Now as we get into the song I tend to let the tip of my first finger in that anchor position touch the 5th string to mute it and on occasion chug a bit on that open 6th E string. Enjoy!

I used to play it different. But the unison B sound more accurate. I once saw Phil play this kick in person and he moved up and it weirddd me out. I never forgot that so I relearned it and it took me a while to get this fingering down. Sometimes I play it A sus.2 and standard f major 7 positions.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker interesting... I only ask, because here ua-cam.com/video/fxrEZ_MvDyg/v-deo.html , at 6:47 he appears to cross pick the last 3 notes of the intro... (Which is how I also believe Steve played it, from the videos I've been able to find) e -0 B------0 G---5 Could be wrong on that, but the only slide I see is when he moves up from 4 to 5 on G with his pinky, right before those last 3 notes. Thanks for the comment man, I appreciate it. Yeh they changed a lot after Pyromania. I think hysteria is amazing. But it sure is polished. The Mutt Lange grip got em. Which commercially was the best thing that could have happened for them. But it was a different sound than the beginning. After Hysteria, adrenaline was so so. I didn't mind it so much... but it was kinda weak. After that... well... Just odd. 😎🥂

Def Leppard's best work was when Steve Clark was alive & in the band. Not a huge fan of Phil Collen, especially after I saw DL in 2007 and Vivian Campbell took a back seat to Phil during any shredding parts. Meanwhile, anyone who's ever played Dio knows that Vivian can run circles around Phil. I get that Vivian was there to play like Steve, who wasn't a big shredder. But it was still a bummer to see Vivian let Phil play the guitar hero.
I agree. Big Steve Clark fan here. Steve was a songwriter and a riff master. His style defined the band and laid the foundation. Not disputing what you say at all here... but Interestingly enough, I have heard some interviews with Vivian in the recent past where he tries to shed himself from the "shred" image and has said he is really not a shredder as more of a blues guy. He has referred to his Dio solos as tricks. He's probably being humble. He seems like a really down to earth dude. I've met Phil before. He's a great guy too. We chatted about our love for the guitar work of Andy Summers and the Police. Phil is just cut from another piece of the carpet than Steve. Steve Clark was the bomb man. 😎🤟🏻
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thanks for sharing all of that Marty. I was not aware of Vivian's views about shredding. It seems hard to believe. My favorite solo of his is Don't Talk To Strangers as it has the perfect shred/blues mix. Plus you get a wonderful "Protect Your Soul" scream by RJD at the climax. That said, I won't be so hard on Phil going forward. It was largely due to my expectations of Dio-VC, instead of DL-VC at that 07 show. Keep up the good work Marty. And there's no shame in branching out with some Warren DiMartini, Jake E Lee & John Sykes - 3 of my favorites behind EVH.
The songs notes are not correct, nor are they being fretted properly. But if this is what you want to teach people more power to you. The songs don’t have to be played just like Steve and Phil. It’s your version, not the correct version.
Yeh. There's a few ways to do it. I change my mind a lot. Lol. 😂😂. Please share your video so I can learn a new way. I would love to see others for sure!

Great lesson! Can you PLEASE do a Def Leppard lesson for "Tonight" ? It's such a cool song -- struggling with finger positions.
That was pretty awesome man! Sick tone. Very crunchy and airy. Are you going into and amp & mic cab or Sims? I dig the Custom also. Is it a ‘70s?
Cheers. 🤘🏼
Thanks John! I use a fractal ax8 for UA-cam. With a Freidman be setting and Friedman impulse responses. I put my delay and verb in through protools. 🤟🏻
Hey Marty! I watched your buddies documentary yesterday. The 1st 30 years of Steve Vai. I must say it was rather good. He is a very smart man, that Stevie is.
It's a good documentary. That guy that made it actually got to work with Steve on getting all that old Info together. He did a really nice job. I thought the story about eating cat food was hilarious. 😂😂

Loving these Def Leppard riffs! I learned a couple new things. Thank you! What's the backstory of that gorgeous weathered LP?
Awesome man, glad to hear! Well... it's an 81 Custom. Has 498t And a 490r in it. Ive had it for about 6 years now. A friend of mine in Nashville collects Les Pauls and only likes flame tops. He had this one and didn't want it....so I swapped a 2012 Lp flame top for it. It's my heaviest guitar. Weighs almost 11 pounds.

You always have great tone. Do you have a Spark Amp and if so, any links to your presets? Thanks!
Hey Kevin. Thanks man. I am running a Fractal Ax8. I have it on a Friedman BE100 amp setting with a stereo Friedman IR (I think is from ML labs??). The IR's are great in the fractal too. I run stereo into pro tools.
For FX I could use the fractal FX but instead I add them in pro tools in case I want to take them out later or add more.
I basically just use a stereo chorus, delay and reverb. Sometimes I don't use a chorus depending on the song.
It makes things easy and sonically nice for UA-cam.

On Foolin': Why would you play 5-4 on the G instead of 5G - 0B? 🤔
(Which is how I also believe Steve played it, from the videos I've been able to find)
e -0
B------0
G---5
Could be wrong on that, but the only slide I see is when he moves up from 4 to 5 on G with his pinky, right before those last 3 notes.
Thanks for the reply!
@@MH3GL interesting! I go by ear mostly. And then try to break bad habits of playing stuff wrong for years. So hard to reprogram. 😩

Steve Clark and Pete Willis were a great duo in layering their parts. After this album your lessons are on, obviously it wasn't the same band and I lost interest.
But great lessons. Honorable mentions Rock Brigade, Wasted, Sorrow is a Woman.

Thanks for watching! 😎🎵🎵
You are playing the intro to Foolin wrong.
