      Didn’t we see a video already of Dan getting his ha buzzed! I’m surprised we are still seeing him with long hair! Have to admit that video was a shock! It will take a bit time for us to get used to the new Dan but it gave us courage to just go for it! Some of us are stuck in our old way and need a push into a new look! Still such a fan here!

      Yeah, this was filmed before his haircut. I loved Dan's long hair, but I understand his reasons for wanting to cut it. With his hair being so incredibly short now, he can grow it back into the shape and length he wants. Personally, I like his hair a little longer.

      I've been blessed to have a few female stylists who were honest with me when I showed them a pic of a style they knew would never work on me. It was hard for me to hear, but I later appreciated it.
      One time, I wanted a Halle Berry cut a la the '90s. My stylist tactfully let me know the cut would not flatter my neck rolls 😅, not to mention that the style was high maintenance. 😂
      I settled for a trim. ✂️
      I'm in awe of Dan's surgical cuts as he massages yet boosts his clients' egos. Master class! 🙌🏾💫

      I have curly hair with a similar curl to his. It's a soft curl and it's very pretty but it has to be cut properly. I am lucky that I have a good hairdresser who works with me and is frank about what my hair will and will not do.

    I have been doing hair for 42 years. I specialize in curly hair. I disagree about conditioners. Shampoo (and water alone) is alkaline which leaves the cuticle open especially on curly hair which in turn leaves the hair dry and dehydrated. Conditioners are acid which are designed to close the cuticle leaving curly hair smoother and more hydrated.

      I have had curly hair all my life 62 years and at the moment it's the longest I've ever had it...half way down my back couldn't agree with you more.My hair would look terrible without conditioner.I always condition, never use products or any shampoo or conditioner full of chemicals.I water down a little conditioner to keep frizz under control.
      People everywhere I go tell me how beautiful my hair is 🙂

    • @josephsalden
      @josephsalden 5 місяців тому +8

      9:46 Dan said I would only condition your hair, every time you shampoo your hair. Emphasising the natural oils to come through rather than depleting with condition when not necessarily shampooing the hair. Timestamp of what he actually said provided. Have a listen :)

    • @Lock484
      @Lock484 3 місяці тому +2

      Joseph is right 👆, I'd just add that he even says at 7:35 that he shampooed and conditioned his hair 😌. His only point was to use those two products together, and then maybe try a leave in after care conditioner on days when you don't shampoo your hair 😉

  • @MrJlepley

    Back when I had hair it was curly like that. I used to pat it dry with a towel, then shake my head over the shower or tub, that's it. It dried shiny and beautiful. Only combed my hair in the shower when I combed in the conditioner (wide toothed comb - and I was a morning shower person). Worked really well.

    I think the cut would have looked a lot better with a longer fringe. Would have been nice with a more tidy sides and leaving length in the front. Just my opinion and what I personally like. Dan is a master and the client didn’t give him much direction other than keep length which doesn’t really work in this situation

    • @DanTowey
      @DanTowey 8 місяців тому +7

      Agree... WAY shorter sides. He has strong bone structure to pull it off.... & a slightly shorter curly top

    • @TheAmazingHuman
      @TheAmazingHuman 8 місяців тому +8

      I think he wanted to preserve the length on the sides based on the picture the client showed him. What the client really needs is a chemical treatment to relax his hair just enough like he suggested, "opposite of a perm". Justin Timberlake has a relaxer and it looks good.
      Btw... the guys hair is gorgeous. Love it! ❤

    So nice to see a cut on curly hair! Being plagued with it myself I’ve lost count of the number of hairdressers who have no idea what to do, or say, “well if I cut the top you’ll have no perm left”. It is hard to take care of curls & to find someone who knows how to cut them. Thankfully, now I’m older, I have the whole lot cut off, back of head shaved, pixie cut, I love it 😊

    When you were giving him advice on how often he needs to shampoo, that hit home for me!
    I am about to turn 73. When I was growing up, the shampoo directions on the bottle all said “wash, rinse, repeat” daily. I only did it once!
    I washed my hair every day because I was an athlete and then went to gym
    Then in last 10 years, I didn’t wash my hair on Sundays!
    Now I am still washing too much. I will try 1 or 2x per week because it is super dried out!
    Crazy how the info has changed over the years.

    A tip to the barber- please don't scrunch or pinch curls. You're only creating frizz. When applying product it's best to apply to wet or slightly towel dried hair, then kind of stroke the hair (top down motion, like youre petting the hair or sliding it between praying hands). This allows product to coat strands without creating frizz. Oh, and you probably need more product than you realize if you use the proper product (usually leave in conditioner). Applying products this way will allow you to see the curl pattern come to life rather than you attempting to create your own curl pattern by scrunching. Hope this helps you in the future. xx

    He needs some curly haircare tips, otherwise he'll just end up with dry, tangled/matted hair again. Setting with gel and mousse then diffuse would be great with getting curl definition, preventing frizz, and holding curls and moisture (which helps with preventing tangles).

  • @Germania72
    @Germania72 7 місяців тому +2

    I think he needs to moisturise that hair. He needs a leave-in, curl cream and a mousse or gel after the shower to seal moisture. That's what I do to keep my waves soft and not frizzy in the UK. Some people mentioned a relaxer. Nah, I see potential in his curls, but he needs to look after it with hair masks once in a while and styling products after washing and conditioning.
    Edit: And yes, I clarify my hair every 2-3 washes. It works marvels to reset your hair not only because of the water, but the buildup from styling products.

    That's the issue with curls: often, when you think you need a haircut, what you really need is just some styling product. Before heading to the barber or salon, give it a few weeks after you start thinking, "I should get a haircut." You might change your mind by then. If not, go ahead, but remember, there's a way to trim your hair while still keeping it long-it's called "fake cutting." Gels, creams, and other styling products are your friends during the so-called "awkward" stage.😂😂

    I think a more modern cut would've been more appropriate for his age and looked better on him.
    But at the end of the day he wanted a good cut to grow over time into his desired cut. Can't really blame anyone for this. The circumstances were what they were. What can you do.

    Why didn't he dry sculpt it first and then tidy it up wet? He needed more projection and volume on the top front, covering his forehead and then gradually shorter around the sides, higher on his crown to round it all out. Again, Dan has worked magic here. Sam has a very sharply angled face and there was just way too much hair on the top that emphasised the angularity of his face and gave it too much height. I really appreciate how Dan gets to the point about what the client thinks he wants and communicates what the clients choice will do and what is actually going to work better. Dan has softened the angles of his face without making him look effeminate. Sam came in looking pinched and left looking more open and approachable.

    He needs "the curly girl hair routine"!!! After shampoo and conditioner you wide tooth comb then scrunch with a microfibre cloth. Then, take leave in conditioner all over your hands and with prayer hands sandwich chunks of hair from root to tip allover. Then take hair gel allover hands and again with prayer hands, sandwich chunks of hair root to tip coating all the hair. This is called putting on the "cast". Then, take the microfibre cloth and scrunch all the hair bottom to roots. Tip your curls upside down into the microfibre cloth and wrap the cloth into a turban and leave for minimum 20 mins. You can use an old t-shirt or cotton cloth if you haven't got microfibre btw. Then unwrap your turban, put a diffuse attachment on your hairdryer and cup tip to roots chunks of curls pushing up to scalp. Switch the hairdryer on when you've cupped and off again before you remove the diffuser. So you switch the hairdryer on and off throughout holding each cup of curls for several seconds. Use a low heat, slowest setting on the hairdryer. Once all dried you will have crunchy curls. Now you need to "break the cast" by gently going around your hair taking hanfuls of curls and scrunching them upwards from tips to roots breaking the gel cast. Once done you will have moisturized, glissy, soft bouncy curls! Use a silk pillowcase or wrap your curls in a silk scarf in bed. To revive curls on the following days you can salt spritz and diffuse or do the leave in conditioner and gel then diffuse. All people with wavy or curly hair should follow this routine because it's really fantastic! Look it up on youtube there's loads of people doing it. Funnily enough i've been doing this routine for 30 years but now it's actually a thing everyone is raving about 😅

    usually the cuts are great, but this was not it. Should have noticed the thinness in his hairline at the start and realized you'd need to leave some of the weight in his midsection to maintain his full look. Also to barbers in general, please stop using thinning shears on type 3 curls cause it breaks up our curl pattern and makes the hair look frizzy like the gentleman here. I hope the client recovers

    Clarifying shampoo will suck the life out of your hair, especially curls. I live where there's hard water, and I've found a vinegar/water rinse once every 7-10 days to be entirely sufficient to keep the mineral deposits in check without drying the hair out.

    I felt sorry for Dan to get someone with the hair like that. The haircut looks okay, but it doesn't look the best. I agree shorter and more structure with a better and probably a low cup beard. I don't know what that guy wants to grow with here. How too it will look a hot mess. But good work for Dan trying to tackle something like that. I noticed the guy wasn't too happy at the end. He didn't ask him if he liked it. They just cut the video off LO. L. The eyes ask are you happy but that video just cut cut off

      Dan's weakness is definitely dealing with very curly hair. The hair is not the problem, this guy has great hair. A specialist would know how to cut and style it.

    • @pacomoka
      @pacomoka 8 місяців тому

      Had the same thought process but you also have to think that the hair's not even near dry at the end, so it's lacking quite a bit of volume. They would've just had to wait it out to get the before/after shot, which I assume they couldn't afford to do.

    i dont think the issue was the cut, dan really is an expert at cutting hair, its the styling approach n technique which has let this whole haircut down. You can see it in the client's face. Its possible that when the client got home an rewet n restyled it it could of looked much better.

    not a great look in my opinion. Really like your videos but a more modern approach would make way better cuts, like introducing fades and tapers more often to your master scissor skills would be amazing.

    Very nice cut but I miss your long thick hair and I am glad you leave it natural and dont color it. If you want more highlights in your hair add some apple cider or reg vinegar to water , rinse your hair with it and go out in the sun. You can also use clear henna, no color.
