+Peter Anderson I've played this game many a times since avgn did this vid and I always gotta pause for the cause to LMFAO from James rant at the end of the episode great shit
Anybody else get the Cowabunga Collection and notice how the in-game museum guide specifically points out the impossible jump and how you can just walk over it?
Congrats on still playing and reviewing this game! The biggest issue I had back in the day was that when I got this game as a christmas gift, I hated it so much because it wasn’t the one my friends had (everyone had the second game at the time). After a few years, I learned to play it, finally liked it and learned how to finish it. Now, it’s one of my favorite NES games
Gary Beltz I don't think there is anything they could do to satisfy "the current generation" with a remake. Most modern games developed purely for modern gamers don't "satisfy the current generation". I mean, just look at the last few Turtles games that have been released. If they were going to make a remake, I think they would have to keep it 99% faithful and just iron out some of the kinks. But I don't think a remake would honestly work at all.
Da da da da da da daaaaa! Da da da... Da da da... DA DA... DA DAAAAA!!! Da da da da da da daaaa! Da da da... Da da da... DA DA... DA DAAAAA!!! Doo da da doo... Doo da da deee! Doo da da doo... doo da da da da daaaa!
I like how the recent cartoon series made a shout out to it and mentioned the two minutes and 10 seconds timer from the dam, from the last season. That was just epic.
I don't have a link it was on TV when I was watching it on Nick. They were underwater avoiding electricity fields and one of the characters said "we have 2:10 to get through this" I was like wow lol
The reason this jump works like this has to do with how the game affects your character after walking off an edge. If you look carefully, you will see your turtle actually raise a bit before he drops. This is why walking across the gaps works so well (as intended for whatever reason). The jump here is the effect of clipping through a wall at the edge and colliding with the top just enough that for one or two frames the game thinks you walked off an edge and raises you up just enough to get up there.
Wow! I just was watching a playthrough of this game yesterday from an uploader name Proton Jon who BTW mentioned AVGN in his video. It's good to see Mike and James playing this game again after all these years. I played this game a few months ago and I only managed to get to the dam where you had to defuse the bombs underwater and that's where I had called it quits.
That "jump" is so insidious because many preceding boards are set up very similarly but with various jumps right at the end at a similar spot. So you are basically hypnotized to think you have to jump.
I've been watching since day one. James, thank you for doing what you've done. Your videos have brought me and my friends years of good memories and you've brought me out of some bad times. Thank you for being the AVGN.
Happy 10th Anniversary Cinemassacre! Thanks for all the nostalgia mixed with a modern narrative to make it hilarious. Kids these days will never understand our X-Bit struggles. 👾👾👾👾🎮😜
The only thing that botheres me about the joke is that in the Nerd episode, we can see the Nerd actually walking over a small gap before the "You can just walk over it?" joke. So, we already knew we could walk over small gaps. But on the other hand, I only noticed it on my third time watching it, or so.
The TMNT video is still one of my favorite AVGN videos of all time! I also remembered making that jump, but never went back to try it after the nerd video. I still think this is a pretty good game, it just has some issues. My main problem with it is the enemy re-spawning. Take that out, and this game would be far less frustrating. I've never beat the game either. When I was pretty young, I would usually either die at the dam, or make it through but be so damaged that I would die quickly in the 3rd stage. As I got older, I could usually make it to the 4th stage but would die there. One time, I somehow made it past that and ended up making it all the way to Shredder, but by the time I got there, I was down to 1 turtle with very little health, so he quickly destroyed me. I need to go back and finally beat it one day.
Not that many players got to experience it, but I really liked the way you could recover fallen turtles at specific points as a way of getting extra lives. Losing and retrieving characters is a cool mechanic and I wish more games used it.
Thank you James and Mike for all the great videos, had tears in my eyes through a lot of them. Ah, the memories 😃 I'm still making my way through them lol
James, the magic of your comedy and video game reviews is in your ability to speak to our childhood ignorance and innocence. The joke holds true because anyone playing the game, unaware, would feel the frustration you exude and behave in a similar manner. The GREATEST part of your shows is in, that your a GROWN MAN behaving like such. I love. Hats off for entertaining me for over a decade.
Wow, can't believe I'm this early. XD I still love the TMNT AVGN episode and it's still one of my favorites (along with the re-revisited episode). Can't believe how long it's been. You guys are still rockin' it!
Oh my god, I just said "holy shit" in unison because my brain exploded and I'm legitimately laughing out loud. "You can just walk over it" remains to be one of the funniest moments of having the internet.
To answer the damn dam question and why it's so loathed, well, I can't speak for everyone, but I don't like 'hurry up and wait' sections. It makes no sense to make a level where it's CRUCIAL to utilize EVERY second on your timer, but make you stop and bide your time with the obstacles. I have awful anxiety and this part is panic attack inducing. Especially the end where the music gets frantic. Kinda like hearing the Sonic drowning music or Shadowgate 'torch running out' sound. My poor chihuahua nerves can't handle it lol.
Your voice doesn't match your appearance. I envisioned overalls caked in mud, work boots, and a long stem of some plant hanging from your mouth. Maybe some chewing tobaccy...
+TriplePProject That's a good chunk of why I quit making videos. Besides editing taking way too long and UA-cam being strike happy over anything and everything. I already felt really self conscious over my Texan accent ~_~ People perceive you as unintelligent and uncouth despite my 1350 on my SATs(me and math aren't on speaking terms, k?). I've never been to a tractor pull, drank a cheap beer, or even watched a Cowboys game or even shot anything, I swear. XD
ahahahah the Sonic drowning music, one of the most disturbing tunes in videogames: TUN-DA-TUN-DA-tun-da-tun-da-TUN-DA-TUN-DA-tun-da-tun-daTUNDATUNDATUNDATUNDA -BLOP-
That same walk-jump happened to myself and a handful of friends as kids, James. None of us could get passed it. Your old AVGN videos are not invalid. One day after many failed jump attempts I just forgot to jump and just walked over the hole. I passed the knowledge onto my friends and we actually got to continue and play the game. None of us, to my knowledge, ever made the glitch jump up. My friend David actually beat the game since I found that out for all of us. It's about the experience, not the results.
Not gonna lie, I had this same exact problem when I was younger. I jumped up there at that part but years down the line, couldn't do it anymore. So now I just walk over it just to save me the trouble of frustrating myself to get up there. xD
Even Aqualunggamereviews referenced the original in his review of the game when he gets to that part he says something like "And don't feel bad AVGN I didn't know you could just walk over that jump either"
Here in the UK the "jump" you can walk over was revealed on a TV show called Gamesmaster in the Consoletation section of the show. Someone asked for help on that section of the game and was told "You should've experimented!" and revealed that walking over the "jump" was the way to do it.
It was brutal for a 6 year-old. As an adult, just put some time into it, and it isn't that hard to complete. The hardest part is finding the technodrome, because the enemies do a lot of damage.
Ja Ja! So nice to see you guys! this makes me think in George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” 8:35 "It's a game that requires a lot of patience and i think that when you're a kid you certainly don't have much patience" also you could say "As an adult i just don't have the time for nothing in my life"
On this game I noticed that if you throw boomerang and if you switch in to the other turtle while boomerang is still flying you can catch boomerangs with all turtles and share it
I remember when I played this it seemed good to us 'cause in the weekends before we'd rented Superman, Back to the Future, The Adventures of Bayou Billy, and some other hideous miscreations :(
Though it has a few flaws, I love this game too! I did a live stream of it back in October and was able to defeat it. (Hint: Get the scrolls!) -Mike ua-cam.com/video/v-YceDqSUo4/v-deo.html
I also love this game, but I never gotten passed the room where the walls with spikes closes in on you. I loose too many Turtles there and hours of setting up the Turtles with scrolls is wasted. That is mayor flaw in my opinion of the game. Still love it though.
I'm pretty sure I beat it when I was a kid. That being said, I did spend several hours a day doing nothing but playing it. By the time I was finished, my reflexes couldn't work on any other games for days.
You can look up speed runs and such. It's possible, check out Nintendo complete. He does play throughs of tons of games. Not really speed runs but he plays and beats it.
I have no way of testing this now but going from my childhood memory, I recall getting higher jumps by doing the upward attack at the apex of the jump. There are a number of shortcut jumps you can make in this fashion.
This has always been one of my favorite games on the NES. I actually have 2 copies of it because I enjoyed it so much! I never knew you could make that jump. I feel like my entire childhood is a lie now. *cries in corner*
You can make the jump by clipping through. That wasn't intended so the joke "You can just walk over it" works. Happy 10 years bud Look forward to more AVGN and Cinemassacre!
Yes! I can just walk over it! After 10 years of falling I'm finally can just walk over it :) After James show me the true, I can just walk over every f****ng hole in my life =D
From what I read the game was commissioned when the cartoon was in early production and no episodes where made yet (the actual title for this game in japan is Geki Kame Ninja Den) so the development team were sent a few pictures of the comics and early prototipes of the figures to have as reference, hence all the wierd enemies , they were simply taking them out their asses because they had little to none idea of what to use. In the famicom version April is said to be Splinter's daughter :P
For me, this game back in the day was like a current open world game, you go to the sewers, walk on the streets, go under water, etc etc, now looking back at it, I can tell this is why I like games like Oblivion or Skyrim or Infamous... thinking more about it, makes me realize that PC game Syndacate Wars just reinforced me that idea, I just realized. Kinda cool
+RetroDeath ya, they should've made a new game with things like this game, new obstacles throughout the game to figure out instead of monotonous fighting
I remember this game so well from my childhood, even this particular "jump", the thing that pissed me off the most as a kid was the trucks that drove around when you're in the turtle van- that used to make my young blood boil! lol
Hate it or Love it, this game might go down as one of the most talked about. This game still proves to be a great conversation piece for avid video game lovers. Great video.
Is it just me or is Mike getting more and more bitter and unfunny with every episode? Dont get me wrong here - love the hell outta that guy but it seems to be like he used to be more relaxed and enjoying himself and the time and now he just wants to discuss things to the bitter end, show skill or talk about very grounded stuff. Wish he would lighten up more and find the joy back or is it just me?
Here's a helpful glitch I discovered some years ago: In the sewer area of level 3 where you get the second missile pack, jump into the water when you get to the end rather than climbing the ladder. If you climb the ladder you'll have to walk around a whole bunch of shit to get back to the van but if you go into the water you reappear in the same spot with the van right next to you.
My dad bought me this game for like $50 back in like 91 for my birthday. I used to play this game and beat it constantly. Like three to four times a week! I was a super expert at this game. I had a specific strategy for beating it. I tried to beat it about years ago or something but did not remember my awesome last level and Shredder strategy so I got destroyed. No Internet or guides! Good memories!
I never found the underwater level to be difficult and was my favorite part of the game when I was a kid, probably because the music for it was awesome. It being notoriously difficult really didn't become a thing until the past couple of years, I think people taking the AVGN episodes way too seriously at the time is what started it actually.
My friend completed this multiple times when he was a kid(like maybe 8/9 years old). He used to hate the dam level, even though a lot of the parts after that were harder. I remember he slept over at my house one time, and in the morning he got to the Technodrome, but then my mum said we had to turn it off because we had to go somewhere. He knew where the "kidnapped" turtles might be too, and said the Technodrome wasn't always in the same place.
James holds his controllers in such a weird way. I always put my index fingers on where the shoulder buttons should be even if they're not there or not used.
Its funny how that jump was always known even as kid, same as the "walk jump" and swimming stage is really easy if you take your time. My major problems started in the driving stage as not knowing where to go and as said then the patience ended :D
"Cowabunga? Cowa fucking piece of dog shit!"
haha good times.
hell yeah
Don't forget "Shredder's my ass and Splinter's my balls!" :D
why cant a turtle swim?
Peter Anderson Damn! Ninja'd ;)
+Peter Anderson I've played this game many a times since avgn did this vid and I always gotta pause for the cause to LMFAO from James rant at the end of the episode great shit
2006: You can just walk over it.
2016: You can just jump through it.
2026: you can just do a lvl skip and go to the end level.
Slowly we're getting a speed run of turtles
Can't believe I've been watching AVGN for over a decade now. My husband still quotes the Turtles and Top Gun episodes regularly.
what about now?)
@@prook3y gotta wait another 3 years for a second anniversary.

That moment I realize I started watching AVGN when I still had hair....
this game does have its flaws but i thought it was pretty good overall
Agreed! I actually love this game aside from a few flaws. And the music is great -Mike
Those Konami drums. They make this game 3x as good as it should be.
I wouldn't mind this game be given "remastered" treatment to.
How would they do a remake in this style that would satisfy the current generation though? I agree it's time for a remake.
Gary Beltz I don't think there is anything they could do to satisfy "the current generation" with a remake. Most modern games developed purely for modern gamers don't "satisfy the current generation". I mean, just look at the last few Turtles games that have been released.

I like how the recent cartoon series made a shout out to it and mentioned the two minutes and 10 seconds timer from the dam, from the last season. That was just epic.
no way did they really?? i love that
I don't have a link it was on TV when I was watching it on Nick. They were underwater avoiding electricity fields and one of the characters said "we have 2:10 to get through this" I was like wow lol
They must've taken 10 seconds off the timer in that episode because it's 2:20 seconds on the underwater portion of the level.
Could have been they prob mentioned 2:20 instead, regardless. Shout out :)
Which episode?
The reason this jump works like this has to do with how the game affects your character after walking off an edge. The water/bomb level still gives me anxiety. Fuck that seaweed.
This game is just great in my opinion... had it on the nes in the 90s in austria, have a nice day...
Even the Cowabunga Collection points this out! Someone at either Konami or Digital Eclipse must have been a fan.
That "jump" is so insidious because many preceding boards are set up very similarly but with various jumps right at the end at a similar spot. So you are basically hypnotized to think you have to jump.
I see that the Mike's jokes came back full force. I thought they died out

Mistranslation.
what I found weird is that Napoleon from the punk frogs is a bad guy also in the game

After James show me the true, I can just walk over every f****ng hole in my life =D
Cowabunga? Cowafucking piece of dogshit!
Congrats on 2,100,000+! Love the vid by the way.
Why is James so red in this episode
Sunburn? Working out?
ever heard about the sun? haha
UA-cam Red ;)
+retroralph wtf LOL
He works out...
I'd be game for seeing James beat this one, similar to how he finally beat the Joker on J&MM. Some pretty epic stuff there!
You can just walk over it.

What are you talking about?
For me, this game back in the day was like a current open world game, you go to the sewers, walk on the streets, go under water, etc etc, now looking back at it, I can tell this is why I like games like Oblivion or Skyrim or Infamous... thinking more about it, makes me realize that PC game Syndacate Wars just reinforced me that idea, I just realized. Kinda cool
This game clearly does not stand the test of time both graphically or game play. the newest TMNT is way better
no fucking shit
that's bullish, this game stands up, that new game is just repetitive button mashing
I'm not sure if sarcasm or not, but i hope so.
The irony is that the new game sucks ridiculously hard and definitely is not the better game here. They completely missed the boat with the new game.
+RetroDeath ya, they should've made a new game with things like this game, new obstacles throughout the game to figure out instead of monotonous fighting
I remember this game so well from my childhood, even this particular "jump", the thing that pissed me off the most as a kid was the trucks that drove around when you're in the turtle van- that used to make my young blood boil! lol
"which is why it was funny" said nobody about anything funny ever lol
that is a fantastic observation sir
Hate it or Love it, this game might go down as one of the most talked about. This game still proves to be a great conversation piece for avid video game lovers. Great video.
Is it just me or is Mike getting more and more bitter and unfunny with every episode? Dont get me wrong here - love the hell outta that guy but it seems to be like he used to be more relaxed and enjoying himself and the time and now he just wants to discuss things to the bitter end, show skill or talk about very grounded stuff.
Wish he would lighten up more and find the joy back or is it just me?
I actually discovered that jumping trick when I was a kid playing this game. Good memories.
I wish I knew about the jumps 25 years ago!! Happy 10 year anniversary!
Watching this video brought back a childhood memory that had regressed. That fucking jump drove me crazy as a kid
I never found the underwater level to be difficult and was my favorite part of the game when I was a kid, probably because the music for it was awesome. It being notoriously difficult really didn't become a thing until the past couple of years, I think people taking the AVGN episodes way too seriously at the time is what started it actually.
6:13 that laugh worth viewing the video. James reaction though
This is very important work you're doing here.
I still have this game. This video will be helpful when I play it again.
