      I realize this is a year old post….but the mud baskets do stellar work at keeping your poles from not only sinking into mud…but also crevices in rocks. They are a tool provided for a reason.

    I’m 75 own a walnut walking stick. I can put all 195 lbs in this walnut stick and it will not break or bend. Hand made by a craftsman in Indiana. $28.00. I have about 1000 miles on this walking stick. It’s been with me thru 4 Bigfoot encounters. You can keep your high tech. Correct grain with very good craftsmanship. You have life time walking stick. My stick poked a bear in the nose. Life is Good!🤗🇺🇸

      I've had this thought myself. Sure, a traditional walking stick may be bigger and heavier, but, they do tend to be stronger and last much longer. My late father had a couple and they are still in perfect order.

    In backpacking, we have a saying. Light, durable, cheap... pick two cuz you can't have all three.
    They sure are light, and the jury is definitely out on durable, but holy cow are they NOT cheap. Unless you are using those things a LOT, it's really hard to justify that kind of cost.
    Personally, when I even carry poles, they spend about 90% of the hike stowed away.

    Agree on the price of the Gossamer Gear poles, and I’m a guy that LOVES their stuff.
    Cascade Mountain Tech comes through again with a similar product. It’s a two-piece carbon poke, EVA handles, flip locks (better than barrel locks imo), cost $63, and weigh 5.6 ounces each without baskets on them.
    Unless you’re REALLY counting grams it’s hard to argue with saving $140 at the cost of .6 ounces per pole

    Such a great video as always! For me, I never check the weight on any of my gear. Except for one piece, well, two pieces, my trekking poles. A couple years ago I spent the cash on the Leki CF poles. When I was a kid I always thought it silly to see the backpackers with poles, but let me tell you trekking poles are a must-have item! Keep up the great videos!

    For those of you wishing they had these in z-poles, good news! For the same price ($199) you can get the Leki MCT Superlite. Fixed length z-poles available in 5cm increments from 105-130 cm. For the 120cm variant, they're only 5.7 oz per pole, with cork grips, removeable/replaceable straps, and they pack down to a ridiculously short 14.5". Because they're fixed, I don't ever have to deal with fiddling with locks or adjustments and they have minimal points of failure. Super reliable and comfortable all day. Hands down the best trekking poles I've ever used.

      Leki's warranty is very good, but Cascade Mountain has a two-piece adjustable carbon pole at 5.6 oz per for $50 on Amazon.

    I most definitely don’t need these but at this point why not. I didn’t mean too but I fell down a rabbit hole and I now have a setup sub 10lbs base weight with a Stratospire Li, Nemo Tensor, Fillo, Rumpl Featherlite, and a HMG Southwest.
    I just find it crazy that back in the day I’ve carried backpacks to school with my laptop and text books and they’ve weighted more than this lol…. That and my other more comfortable setup was like 30lbs but to be fair it includes a comfortable pack, a huge campsite tarp, and a chair and table haha. Wouldn’t want to trek far with that though.

    Since I hike and hunt in cold weather, I only use aluminum poles. Carbon fiber gets brittle in cold weather, and I'd rather have a little more weight for the additional safety factor.

    2:48 Don't land on your trekking poles! 😁
    I was an avid cross-country skier for years and broke a number of fibreglass poles. My favorite pair of poles are thin-walled aluminum ones. They are bent in numerous places and scraped all over. A deep scrape in fiberglass or carbon fiber can create a stress raiser which is a weak point, and the laminated tubing can break. The number of layers of carbon cloth, the thread diameter, angle of the weave, layer to layer, and the resin and method of impregnating the cloth with the resin, plus so many environmental factors determine the final strength of the tubing. It's even more complicated in the manufacturing of carbon bicycle frames. Carbon fiber products aren't created equal. I would like to see a pole set with carbon upper sections and an aluminum lower, since that's the main section that hits rocks on a regular basis.

  • @chemistryflavored
    @chemistryflavored 3 роки тому +8

    I will always take aluminum poles, even if they are heavy and "outdated". My poles have actually saved my life by not breaking when carbon fiber would have. I almost fell down a snow drift covered mountain when I lost my footing and the ONLY thing keeping me there was my pole. My tent also needs both poles and I'd hate not having one if it broke. To each their own I guess.

    CF doesn't do well against non-tip to tail forces... like getting the end caught in rocks as the pole is bent. Having mud guards kind of helps w/ that a little, but you still can get caught in between some rocks... and definitely on planks.

    $ 100.00 per pole .. naah.
    My Aluminium Poles are heavier, but far cheaper and most probably stronger.

  • @calvinminer4365

    That's pretty short. Most women's pole max out at 125cm and men's 135 to 140 cm. Wouldn't buy some made to small just to save some weight.

    they are pretty amazingly light, and with that come the prone to breakage on falls, but investment is good since you can just replace a section rather then having to buy new poles. I just reviewed them compared to the cnoc carbon corks and i thought the GG lT5s were worth it given the weight savings.

    Glad you didn't get hurt worse than you did! I am only going to buy aluminum poles due to my experience with Carbon poles for Alpine Touring, and trying to be a "weight weenie." I snapped one pole in the middle of a groomed run with a pole plant, and another during a high speed crash which ended up causing a lot of damage to me as well. The durability of the aluminum is worth the added weight, especially up here in the Northeast (specifically White Mountains). I have the Black Diamond Trail which are almost 3.5x heavier, but a buddy and me put them to the test this summer on a Presi Traverse in 1 day. Lots of paint chips taken off the poles in that 1 day, but still going strong. Not sure that we would have been so lucky with carbon. As with everything though, there are situations where carbon poles would be far superior... most likely a place that is not as rocky as what we are accustomed to here. Just wanted to share my experience with carbon vs. aluminum. Really enjoying your content!

    I considered these poles at the beginning of last winter. Finally, pulled the buy trigger on a pair of MSR Dynalock Carbon Fiber Ascend TPs
    Gossamer Gear TPs are, by far, the lightest carbon fiber poles on the market, at this time. Perhaps too light for durability. 10oz for a pair of GG TPs. 17oz for a pair of MSR Ascend TPs.
    I, typically, don't use TPs when I'm hiking up or down big rocks. I prefer to concentrate on how & where I place each foot. TPs are slippery on large rocks. TPs come into their own when they can be planted into the trail/soil or when hiking on a snow packed trail along with MicroSpikes.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

    I agree they are great trekking poles, but.... if they were some cheapo $35 poles that you have to retighten after the first mile or so, would you still them high marks for quality or would you talk about how much better Gossamer Gear or Leki locking mechanisms are?

  • @Waldlaeufer70
    @Waldlaeufer70 2 роки тому

    Really a funny suprise at the end of the video. However, if there are people who just read the title and look at the picture without watching the video, they might consider the poles as really bad quality.
    I have bought mine (the older version made out of two parts) seven years ago and have hiked a lot with them. They have never let me down. However, the twist lock system - even if very strong and stable - is a bit tricky to handle at times. I hope the newer system is a bit easier to work with.

  • @tc-mc2ns
    @tc-mc2ns 3 роки тому

    Video was informative, but maybe cut to the chase sooner. A lot of times, someone is not going to stick around for the ending -leaving with an impression you thought the pole came up short under use. I have metal poles, and if i had jammed a pole, it would have failed under that same situation. wouldn’t all poles fail under that stress load?

    I was on a hike which took me around the side of a cliff and the space was so limited that rangers had driven a piece of rebar into a boulder to step on and then you have to sort of duck under an overhanging boulder at the same time. The fall would be hundreds of feet down if you slip. The poles I had on my backpack were long and caught the top boulder as I stepped onto the rebar. Luckily, nothing bad happened but it freaked me out a bit and I bought shorter poles (Black Diamond Trailbacks; good quality and value and easy to find parts for).

    Hi Dan, I really like your reviews but the bit about not finding that waterfall without that app seems disingenuous at best. Those falls are so popular in Oregon that you can just follow the other hikers or the well marked trail. The app looks like it could be good for more difficult areas.
