  • Good morning. I'm Dr. David Richardson. I'm a cataract and glaucoma surgeon that practices in Southern California. I've been playing with a video idea; basically, take a little bit of time I've gotten in my day that's free to share some of the knowledge that I have about glaucoma that may not be commonly available online.
Right now, I'm discussing systemic issues that can be associated with glaucoma as part of a holistic approach to treating glaucoma; not limited just to addressing intraocular pressure or IOP. One of the things I mentioned in the first video was sleep apnea. So, I'd like to discuss a little bit about sleep apnea. And let's get going and chat.

Great, succinct content. Your linking my sleep apnea with onset of normal tension glaucoma when no one else said this is key to helping me with both.

Hi My husband suffered with sleep apnoea for years. Then a friend recommended taking calcium supplement to help with tiredness.. It CURED the sleep apnoea. He also found out he was coeliac hence deficient in vitamins and minerals. He needed extra magnesium also for restless legs and jerking when he lays down to sleep.. Thought you might be interested. I am looking at your videos because i have just had trabeculectomy surgery. Thank you.

Dr. Richardson, thanks for this informative video about the sleep apnea and glaucoma. I have both, at VA they told me to take the sleep apnea study because they found out that I have lack of oxygen in my blood stream. At that time, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and glaucoma as well. So, result to me very interesting that this condition about the lack of oxygen in my bloodstream is associated to the glaucoma also. I didn’t know that was associated as you explain as I understand. Again, thank you for that important information.

How do you sleep at night now then?
      On the side?
I don't think you can sleep on your back with sleep apnea...
But isn't sleeping on the side bad for patient with glaucoma?

Omg! Same! I was wondering how insomnia affects glaucoma or if there was a link and this is one of the videos that came up.

Hi Dr. My Husband has just been diagnosed with having Glaucoma and he does not want the nasty side effects that come with the Latanoprost eye drops. He hopes that there is the possibility of an operation. Meanwhile, while we explore these options, are there any eye drops without terrible side effects such as nausia, headaches, extra growing of eyelashes and ingrowing, red soreness of eyes and dizeness? Thanks

    Dear Doctor
What I have noticed is a certain opacity in the tutorials or videos that talk about eye pain in glaucoma. Because sometimes they say that only the "angle closure" hurts and sometimes they say that it hurts when it is "open angle"; but at the same time they say that the "open angle" does not hurt or give symptoms until it is advanced and we notice the "tunnel vision" could you clarify a little about it? Sometimes I have pain that I don't know whether to attribute to blepharitis or high eye pressure.
    Best regards

Hello, thanks for this. I was diagnosed with papilledema and then IIH. I found a new neurologist and he is recommending I do a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea. I'm doing it tonight. Have you ever seen patients in their 30s with papilledema?

Doctor, thanks for such an informative video. I’d like your opinion on something not too related to this video, but as someone who is a month post GATT, when would you say it is fine to be exposed to sunlight and when is it fine to read/exercise? My doc says I can do whatever I want, which is awesome but I’d like your opinion as well. Thank you again.

Stephen V. Tran Glad you found the video informative. There really are no post-op restrictions after GATT once the blood has cleared from the anterior chamber (front part of the eye).

Thank you for this information, which no one else is talking about. Doc, you really should possibly consider not driving and looking at your camera.....check the accident statistics.

My suggestion Dr is to not interrupt your talk with that music, it's annoying and jarring. You have a lovely soothing energy but those interruptions are not.
I love these informative videos on glaucoma especially your holistic approach. 👀😊
