  • Sleep Apnea Signs & Symptoms (& Why They Occur) | Central, Obstructive & Mixed Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a term for several conditions involving decreased airflow during sleep. There are 3 main types of sleep apnea including central sleep apnea (CSA), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and mixed sleep apnea (MSA), which all cause very similar signs and symptoms, although with some differences. In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea and why those signs and symptoms occur.

Tnx doc! Now I know where my problems including my depression are coming from, was just too scared and embarrassed ( due to wetting the bed ) to ask a professional and tested but this informative video helped me a lot. I’ll see my doctor and talk to him about my condition

I have had obstructive sleep apnea since probably teenage or early adult years. I always woke up with headaches and just felt like garbage all the time. I am 42 and I got a sleep test and CPAP a bit under a year ago. MY LORD! My life has changed. The only regret I have is I didn't do it sooner. Weight was not an issue as I was always relatively thin most my life. It's just genetic. Take it from me, get your sleep study and CPAP immediately. My only regret is I didn't do this sooner.

Just before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, I was finding that I would just spontaneously nod off during the day. Most scary while driving, combat it with caffeine. Now sleep with a C.P.A.P. device all those symptoms are gone. Just to drive the point home, at one point figured I didn't need the device. Stopped using it. Was at work one day, fell asleep while sitting at my station and fell on the floor!! Wow several people witnessed it!! Big eye opener take that C.P.A.P. device seriously.

SERIOUSLY?!! I searched these videos today because I’ve been falling asleep spontaneously while driving and working and it just recently started feeling like someone is trying to push my off button and I’m fighting to stay awake! Your comment cemented it for me that I need to go get this taken care of, I really REALLY appreciate your comment! It made the difference for me!

Thank you both for your comments. Last year I blacked out while driving and had a full work up at the hospital. No real results. Happened again at work last week. Another hospital stay. Now I'm in the process of being tested for sleep apnea. I've been googling symptoms and none show anything about falling asleep or blacking out so thank you for confirming I'm not alone

I have this thing where as I’m falling asleep, I stop breathing and it manifests as thinking I’ve swallowed my lip piercing; I’ve imagined I have an apple stuck in my throat; and sometimes it’s believing i’m choking on my own spit. It seems to be mostly at the exact point I’m about to fall asleep. I went to the doctors surgery today and he told me it’s probably sleep paralysis. I’m not sure about that… I want to go back and push for a referral to a sleep clinic. I do have insomnia in general and I’m trying to correct it but this is a hurdle. It’s worth mentioning, I have terrible sinuses and my nose isn’t my primary way of breathing in at night. What are your thoughts? It happens a lot and I’m done being tired and having the heck scared out of me.

Can sleep apnea also affect your eyes as in feeling strained and heavy constantly and sometimes certain patterns looka s if they are vibrating as been battling the last 12 months waking during the night not getting enough sleep. My partner says my snoring is intorable. Every day know I wake up feeling as of I am hungover lightheaded constantly weak and exhausted and constant neck pain

I had mild apnea for a long time. Now it seems like I'm experiencing mixed. Even when I sleep on my side, I feel like I choke as soon as I fall asleep. This causes me to wake back up. My throat is extremely sore and I've had a headache for about 4 days now.
Sounds like I need surgery. My some years ago, my doctor told me to lose weight. But I'm 6' 165 lbs. I'm also pretty active. I guess old age is catching up to me (46). But I can't live like this. I feel terrible and can barely function. And when can't get proper sleep, you might as well be dying.
I'm making an appointment today for a sleep study. I probably destroyed who knows how many brain cells because of this.😅

Ill be going for my test ina month...this is a nightmare, i miss my sleep! I think i have mixed MSA and its worse because i have asthma , plus insomnia , dry mouth at night....it feels like im going to die every night and now it lead to sominphobia ( extreme fear to fall asleep ) i dont take naps anymore and I stay up at night as long as i can , sometimes i dont even sleep at all. The longest was 2 days but my mind and body couldn't take it anymore and i juss had to fall asleep. Now im terrified if i see a bed or anything that has to do with sleep...when i do sleep and i wake up first thing on my mind is worried about when night arrives ....this is hell for me i don't wish this on anyone... sometimes i juss wish this will end so i can stop suffering :/

Does anyone have the problem that the CPAP and/or mouth appliances have reduced their sleep stoppages to almost nothing, but they are still waking up with their head filled with sand/snow/cotton? If this simply because it takes a while for the brain to adjust to the machine so you wake up with a clear head? Because the machine has its own side effects? Or because of an undiagnosed brain condition in addition to the sleep apnea?
