  • In this video I show how to replace the HID headlight bulb on my 2008 Saab 9-3 and restore the expensive factory headlights. The bulb replacement is similar for 2003-2012 Saab 9-3s with the xenon headlights.
Please be sure to send me your suggestions for a headlight clear coat. Thanks!
    Items shown in video include:
1.) 2008-2012 D1S 35w 6000k bulbs (easier to find on Amazon and don't have to wait over a month to get like on eBay!): amzn.to/34Ic959
    2.) OEM bulbs $$$$: www.esaabparts...
    3.) OR 2003-2007 D2S 35w: www.esaabparts...

You don’t have to remove bumper to replace lights but I’m glad you did because I’ve got to replace my radiator.

Mine is an '08 aero v6, I didn't have to remove anything to get to the starboard-side bulb other than the circular cover. On the other side, I did have to remove the wiper-fluid duct, but that was all. I don't have particularly large hands or thick wrists, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I think he did it for renewing his lights. Kinda better than having yo tape around the headlight and you have better control. But you could get good results either way

You don't have to take the bumper out for just bulb 💡 replacement, just take the battery cover and air intake cover and you should be fine. Besides that, if you really care about the brightness, then you shouldn't put this type of light bulbs.
    Check this one,
    www.theretrofitsource.com/d1s-osram-xenarc-66144-nightbreaker-laser.html
And here is a comparison to just get an idea of how much of brightness you can get with those.

Don't forget that you got snow on your state so, it's really important to have the best. Also, why don't you install yellow HID's for the fog lights?
Also, watch this video to know the best way to restore your headlights in my opinion

Excellent information! Thank you for taking the time to share!! I've been debating switching to yellow fogs. I feel like this is an obvious answer but do you think its worth the investment to go with an hid kit for the fogs over yellow tinted halogen bulbs?

No problem bro, that's what you deserve when you become a SAAB owner ;-)
And it is my job to share my knowledge and experience with the SAAB owners.
Now back to our topic, but before that I hope you will forgive me for my long comment.
I am not recommending you install HID’s for just the color. There are many other reasons to switch to HID instead of Halogen or even LED. At the beginning, let’s talk about brightness. As I am sure that you and many other people agree, the brightness level will offer the most important quality for any type of headlight and fog lights.
With xenon headlights, you can get anywhere from three to five times the brightness level you would with standard halogen lights. By that, you may able to see more than 500 meters away from you, which can help you to drive safely and to bypass all risks. Your lights will make the driving experience safer for yourself, as well as those around you because they’ll have an easier time spotting your vehicle from any direction.
When you have very bright light bulbs (HID), they will allow you to navigate turns with greater confidence and parallel park in tight spaces with a clearer eye for your surroundings. Even during the daytime when you pull into dim-lit garages, HID headlights can make the experience of parking your vehicle a whole lot easier.
Another example which could explain of how HID’s are important, if you’re driving in dim-lit hillside or back country roads, xenon lights will help you spot crossing deer and opossums. Likewise, you’ll have a better sense of when to slow your vehicle in areas populated with such animals. With this added sense of where you’re heading on late night commutes, you’ll make better driving decisions and avoid fuel-consuming wrong turns and unintended detours.
A further benefit of the clarity and safety that HID brightness offers is the level of farsightedness you get during nighttime commutes. This ability to see things instantly and more clearly from greater distances can help you prevent disasters and get to your destination in less time, and also cut down on fuel costs.
Simply put, HIDs are the best headlight and fog light bulbs for night driving and even in times of rain and snow as well as in times of natural storms.
As for advising you about choosing bulbs in yellow color instead of any other color for the fog lights, the yellow light penetrates through snow, rain, and fog more effectively than white or blue light, making it more ideal for bad weather applications.

@@mobbak"What you deserve when you become a Saab owner", lol, true words spoken! I own a '05 9-3 Aero Sport Sedan, beautiful auto but always something! I also had the same bulb issue (flickering, on and off) that had me, at one point, replacing the HIDs before figuring out that it was a ballast issue.

Another nice DIY saab vidoe. For 08+, I don't think you need to removed the bumper to replace the headlight bulbs. As for sealant, don't use Meguiar headlight sealant, they last at most a year, and turns milky. I got a question for you, my 08 saab has the same light, I keep getting the "Cornering light malfunction" message on the driver side, any idea what would be issue. The light is working, but i can tell the light projection was slight different than the working side. I searched the saab forum, some said it might be the self leveling mechanism near the wheel. I'm planning to swap the left and right and see if i can get the same message. Not sure the connectors are the same for both side.

    • @WeakestofWeeks
      @WeakestofWeeks  5 років тому

Thank you for your comments! I will avoid the Meguiars headlight product. As for the cornering light malfunction, I have been fortunate to never get that error. However, I would start with the sensors. One sensor is attached to the left front control arm and I think another is on the rear left side control arm. Outside of visually inspecting them to see if they're broke or disconnected l, I'm not entirely sure how to properly diagnose. Additionally, from what I've heard there is also an auto level control module of some sort in the engine bay and then also the actuator on the bottom of the headlight assembly next to the xenon ballast.

      @winglik7 5 років тому

@@WeakestofWeeks Thanks for the advice. Will play around with the actuator and switch the light and see if get the same message.

I bought two bulbs for around 90$ and after all it turned out that my bulbs are fine and problem is somwhere else. Unfortunately it wasent possible to give back that new bulbs back in to the shoop. No idea where's ther problem. Balast connection ?

After polishing / cleaning your head lights you can tint wrap them in a legal shade. Mine are wrapped to 20%. Main thing is they offer UV protection which caused them to yellow in the first place, plus the tint acts as a physical barrier to stop dirt and debris. 👍🏻

I think I prefer the H7 bulbs which can be changed from the inside by simply pulling off the battery cover and the wiper fill tube. No tools required and it only takes 4 minutes.

I just changed my xenon bulbs the same way today. No tools required. Just pulled the battery cover and held the wiper fill tube to one side as you described. Took me like 5 minutes.

How long did the eBay lamps last? I feel like my Xenons go after a year or two no matter what so if it's even a year you got out of them it's probably worth it.

Why remove the bumper? Makes no sense. But you did an excellent job explaining the bulb replacement. When folks actually do this with the assembly in the car the connecter is on the top. Tricky to remove. Be patient!

I need to do an update video bc since this one I've replaced my xenons with out pulling the bumper. I will say it's a must when replacing the passenger side DRL light on my US spec car. Those pesky AC lines are in the way and there's just no room. I also prefer to pull the headlights when sanding them down and then polishing. I'm always nervous to slip and sand the fender lol.

Nice video, but contrary to the others comments on the Mequiars 'Keep Clear' clear coat, I used it with good results. Several light coats not only prevents further oxidizing, but doesn't yellow. It's been 1-1/2 yrs. and they still look good.👍
