Video from the Detroit side at the foot of GM Building to the Windsor side in Canada.
First stop is to pay the toll, second stop is the actual Canada Customs Checkpoint.
Some construction work in the tunnel, I think that was on the U.S. side of the tunnel, the actual border is where the two flags are painted on the side walls.
MUST have a Canadian or U.S. Passport to cross the border.
Border crossing occurred sometime after midnight, that's why pretty empty at the border.
At the end of the video, Detroit Skyline and Windsor Casino by night.

Very recently the Canadian Government (CONSERVATIVE PARTY) has increased the duty/tax-free exemptions for goods purchased outside Canada.
What can I bring back with me?
When you return to Canada, duties and taxes are applicable on all purchases unless you qualify for a personal exemption. Personal exemptions allow you to bring goods of a certain value into the country without paying the regular duties. If you have been outside Canada for:
•24 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$200 worth of goods free of duty and tax; ◦If the goods you bring in are worth more than CAN$200 in total, you cannot claim this exemption. Instead you have to pay full applicable duties and taxes on all goods you bring in.
•48 hours or more, you can bring in CAN$800 worth of goods free of duty and tax;
•7 days or more, you can bring in CAN$800 worth of goods free of duty and tax. Goods may be in your possession at time of entry to Canada but are also permitted to follow entry to Canada (via courier, mail or delivery agency).
Alcohol and Tobacco - Restrictions apply to the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring into Canada under your exemption. If you have been outside Canada for at least 48hours and are of legal age, you can bring in these amounts of alcohol and tobacco products free of duty and tax as part of your personal exemption:
Alcoholic beverages:
•1.14 L (40 oz.) of liquor; or
•1.5 L of wine; or
•24 X 355 ml (12 oz.) containers of beer.
Tobacco products (all of the following):
•200 cigarettes;
•50 cigars or cigarillos;
•200 tobacco sticks; and
•200 g (7 oz.) of manufactured tobacco.
If you bring in more than the free allowance of alcohol or tobacco, you will be required to pay the applicable duties and taxes.
Detroit is an amazing city! Windsor is certainly fortunate to be the opening gateway to mid-western Canada.

I've always liked taking the tunnel to Canada better than the Ambassador Bridge because I like the thought of taking an underwater tunnel to Canada. It's so fascinating how the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel was made.

Went to college at Toledo and made more trips to Windsor than I can remember. We usually took the bridge but I've gone over via the tunnel twice. Miss those trips.
I see a lot of people in the comments section goffing at how big the transition is from US to Canada. As someone who was born in Windor and has lived there for a long time, all I can say is that its in a different country. I understand that Detroit is very close to Windsor and shares some similarities, but you need to realize that they are separated, lol. Canada in general is somewhat more "peaceful", and quite different from US, so you can expect some pretty awesome changes.
All I'm saying is that different countries, even if they're close together, don't usually share the same rules.
Like for your comment BUT you forgot one major factor that makes all the difference btwn Windsor and Detroit and pretty much btwn USA and Canada and I'm talking about gun violence (black-on-black with ILLEGAL guns): DEMOGRAPHICS.

Detroit: Whites 10.61% (2010), Blacks 82.69%.
Windsor: Whites 77.1% (2006), Blacks 3.9%.
Now forget about rest of Canada, big country, right? but why pretty much no blacks in Windsor compared to neighboring Detroit (just one small river btwn them), why is that?

Never used Ambassador Bridge, full of trucks AND the most expensive border crossing btwn US and Canada.

I haven't crossed over to Canada in over 15 years. It used to be, before 9-11: Customs agent says, "Citizenship?" You respond: "U.S." "Where are you headed/what is your purpose for your visit?" "Going to Jason's strip club". Vrooommm........c-ya!! Or get pulled to the side for a car search.

My brother went to Lake Superior State University. It was a golden rule that if you went to Canada for alcohol, you had to make it a longer trip because the border guards just seen you go in and would check your car coming back to the US. So, the students grabbed some beer, stopped and ate some fast food before bringing beer back to their dorms. He actually was the first person to take me out of the country. Mom was pissed but it was a great time

@@Abonanno24601 Sadly. Jokers is now an empty lot. Don Cherrys was torn half down recently. Sat doing nothing for a number of years. Now a 3 or 4 story condo is being built. Howl at the Moon has changed a few times. It is now The Bull N Barrel.

In 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983 we passed through this tunnel when driving to Florida for family vacation at March break. One of the times on the way back to Canada, there were people milling around the stopped cars entering (or inside) the tunnel, I only remember it was dark. And later my dad found the hubcaps were gone from the Buick Skylark..
When going to Canada from Detroit we always took the Tunnel. I have never been on the Bridge.

For toll rates, the winner is Bluewater Bridge, now accepting CCs on the US side as well, last Oct I returned back to Canada and cash only (US funds only), CCs always accepted on the Canadian side heading to USA.

Yes, motorcycles are prohibited in the tunnel both ways.

I guess for the Detroit-Windsor area Ambassador Bridge is the only way to cross the border both ways riding a motorcycle.
I have crossed the border into Canada from three different States, and I could not help but notice the stark difference as I did. It was like stepping out of darkness into a brightly lit, sunny day. Has anyone else ever felt this way too? And how do you Canadians feel when you cross the American border? Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying that one country is better than the other, but It's just the way I experienced it.

Visited the entire Continental USA, 48 out of 50 states.
IF you're a proud Obama/HRC progressive liberal, I guess you pretty much love Canada, cause I bet that's what you meant by Canada brightly lit vs. USA darkness, right?, but for Conservative Americans, that's the opposite except visiting family or some easy border crossing for shopping only taking advantage of very strong USD.

I feel this way all the time crossing over into Canada. I've crossed from Detroit to Windsor and from Buffalo to Fort Erie and it's a drastic difference in the way things look and how the people are. I used to think that Canadian towns and cities bordering the US would be exactly or close to the same but that's far from it.
I like how the Canadian border guards can do their jobs and not be total dickheads about.

Most times I've crossed the border I've usually been driving 3-5 hrs to get there - I love American drivers they're more courteous - always relieved when coming into the US - returning to canada after a month or so in US I know what you mean though- In my opinion I think at the border crossings the USA has more industrial and bigger cities and you can see more trees on the Canada side which makes it feel brighter. I could be full of shit just what I noticed.

1) if you happen to use a radar detector, be aware they are illegal in Ontario BUT... I've been using RDs for about 11 years and no issues whatsoever, get in touch with me IF you happen to use one while in Ontario,
2) if you happen to own guns (I do) and wanna take them with you while in Canada (firearms are federal jurisdiction), you can fairly easily do that legally, get in touch with me as well if you need assistance on this issue.

Recreational marijuana is ILLEGAL in Canada, all 10 provinces plus three territories.
Only medical marijuana is lawful but strictly regulated and you must keep all paperwork on you when stopped by a LEO.
If CBSA agents find anything illegal in your car, you might get arrested and automatically turned back to U.S. hopefully with no criminal record on you.

Hi Shane, this is the only LEGAL underground border crossing in entire North America, cause lots of ILLEGAL tunnels btwn USA and MX, if you know what I mean LOL
Yes, for this tunnel you pay BOTH ways, $4.50 to USA and $4.75 to Canada. They accept credit cards at the toll booth. Same for Ambassador Bridge but that's mostly for big trucks. They are privately run, same for ALL other border crossings to Ontario, ALL TOLL BRIDGES. No land crossing btwn USA & Ontario.
Tunnel runs under Detroit River.
Has anyone taken the bus? How long does it usually take for them to evacuate the bus and check everybody's passport?

The cool part about visiting the USA or Canada is the duty free stores. Plus in the states gas is cheaper.

I'm planning on getting an enhanced licences and driving from Detroit to Windsor. What is everything I need to bring to the border and once I get there what are some hotels you recommend in Windsor. Did you find it hard adjusting to the km and miles difference? On a side note, I got a picture with the Caesars casino behind me in the background. 3) Try to use a good GPS device on your dashboard and set it up for km so you'll get driving speed in kph, also in Canada liters vs. gallons at the gas pump and Celsius vs. Fahrenheit for local temps,

1) Just one toll highway in Ontario and that's around Toronto AND that's an electronic toll road (ETR) so no toll booths like in the States, they photo record your license plate and then send you a bill regardless where you live in Canada or USA,
2) All places accept credit cards, same like in the States except for toll booths, that includes McDonalds, Burger King, etc., also all gas stations accept pay-at-the-pump with a credit card, but if you don't have a credit card go to any financial institution in USA and get some Canadian Dollars cash, it's up to you to figure out how much you're gonna spend in Canada.
BTW, for the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or Ambassador Bridge, you can pay the toll with credit card or cash in either USD or CAD.

Shawn Ryu I'm pretty sure they (American and Canadian Customs) know who's a "friendly" and safe border crosser and who needs to get a more detailed "attention" from them. As soon as you cross the border pretty often (and I'm absolutely sure they know when was your last border crossing AND how many times have you crossed the border in the past years) AND no issues whatsoever with your previous border crossings, they will see you as very low-risk border crosser and therefore they will ask you just the routine Qs, citizenship, where you live, where you going, how long you'll stay in the States (or Canada), where you stay, how much cash on you, what's your occupation, when did you cross the border last time and where did you go, coming back to Canada what did you buy and how much, these are their main Qs but not necessarily you'll be asked all the Qs of the above. In my case max 2-3 min to clear the Customs on either side of the border regardless where I've crossed the border. LOL On a serious note, depends what state you live in (and I mean the "famous" CO, WA, etc.) and your type of lifestyle, marijuana is strictly illegal in Canada except medical marijuana, not allowed to cross the border with any quantity, big trouble if you get caught, most likely if you're lucky they wont charge you with anything BUT you'll have to go back to the States right away, also couple of firearms are prohibited in Canada, you're allowed to enter Canada with most of long guns (rifles and shotguns) Americans legally own in the States but you MUST declare them at the border, ammunition as well, other than that I see no issues entering Canada unless something in your Criminal record. Canada and USA share the intel when it comes to criminal record in each country. Be safe out there.

Shawn Ryu You get told (by Canadian or US Customs) to drive to the 2nd Inspection Area where they will search your entire vehicle (engine included) only after you have failed to satisfy the (Canadian or US) Customs officer they have nothing to worry about you, Homeland Security and cargo in your vehicle. In my case very rarely I have the great "honor" to take part in this waste-of-time program, last time two years ago while crossing the border from New Brunswick into Maine, the first US Customs officer (a she) found it strange that somebody who lives in Toronto has to cross the US Border some 1K miles away from the nearest border crossing in Buffalo, NY, after maybe 30 min all cleared to get into U.S.A. In their defense, they are doing their job and if you have nothing to hide, this is just a very minor inconvenience in your life.
