I think even with inverted mode the backlight on all ips, va, oled still distrupts the eyes, for reading the E-ink display is still the ultimate thus why people sacrifice performance for something soothing and light weight.

No way it is a Kindle alternative. The Mini 6 jelly effect is horrible to my aging eyes, the font scaling it poor and it is too heavy for reading. And battery life is terrible. I have the Mini 5 and bought the Mini 6, but returned it. Piece of overpriced junk in my view. Will stick with my older Kindle.

Interesting video but for me several key elements make an iPad unsuitable as a regular reader:
    1. Poor visibility in outdoor settings. Try reading with an iPad on a bright sunny day.
    2. Distractions. Even with smart notifications the temptation to do other things on an iPad destroys the mindful and distraction free nature of reading.
    3. Battery life. e-ink displays take all the worry of battery top ups away. This creates a more relaxed state of mind.

I agree 100%. For minimalists who don’t want multiple devices, and who casually read on devices, I see the portentously of the mini. But for a stand-alone e-reader I agree the kindle is the best

The new iPad Mini is a device I want for no justifiable reason. It just looks really neat considering the size and the small bezels. I have a 10 inch iPad Pro from 2018 that is just fine, but I can’t even get over the lack of eInk displays for reading. I vastly prefer a Kindle solely for that reason. Good video, but for me my kindle is a better option because of the e-ink display. You are correct about the Amazon ecosystem not being huge, but I use calibre to put books on my kindle, amd you can set it up to convert epubs to mobi format for the kindle. So you are not truly confined to Amazon. Having said that, the kindle isn’t for everyone. I’ve been trying to get my wife to jump on the kindle bandwagon, but she prefers reading on her iPhone. The iPad mini sounds like a good option for her. Thanks for the video!

@@Bhawna03, a lot of it is individual preference. I started out with a kindle paperwhite in 2015 and loved it, so I upgraded to the new base kindle paperwhite a month ago. I love the new one. Having said that, from my understanding kobo makes a great e-reader as well. I like how their ecosystem is a lot larger, and they can accept more formats than a kindle can. They also have some features that I wish the kindle has, which they can add with a software update, but haven’t done yet. As far as a kobo vs. an android tablet, that will again be individual preference. I don’t like reading on my phone or any kind of screen like that, but I love reading on an e-ink screen, as they are much easier on the eyes. Love my iPad and uses it for reading, however the draw of an ereader is the e-ink not just the size. The iPad is great but still a computer screen which leads to more eye stain and the other apps encourage distraction. My reading attention span had decreased since I began reading on my iPad. My personal experiment proved that the nightshirt does not make as big a difference in night reading as switching to paper. It will always be up to the individual, however due to the fundamental differences the mini iPad hasn’t replaced the kindle up to now and likely never will. I don’t have a kindle yet but am planning on getting one.

  • @oBraveHeart

My reason for switching from a Kindle to an iPad Mini is the simple fact that, unlike the iPad, or any tablet for that matter, the Kindle isn’t ideal for reading Manga. Now I can enjoy my novels, as well as my manga in almost perfect experience. Minus the battery life, of course, but it really doesn’t effect me all that much due to my sporadic reading habit.

Have to tell you - for such a new channel - your content so far has been extremely impressive!
Each of your videos are beautifully lit , performed and edited - all super polished and professional.
    Excellent start!!
I’ve always preferred Kindles or even Fire tablets to iPads for reading.
As a full service device, of course , there is no comparison - the very best Fire Tablet is still not close to even the least expensive IPad.
My IPad is easily the device I use the most every day for almost everything - and they are even great for reading Comics and graphic novels .
But for novels? Not so much!
As a pure reading device - The Kindle Paperwhite or The Kindle Oasis is definitely the way to go.
Besides the E ink which lets you read anywhere and which allows the battery to last for weeks instead of hours and which does not give you any eye strain - to me, it just FEELS better to read on a Kindle.
The very light form factor - the features - all of it specifically designed for reading and you can really see that when you use them.
Btw - I notice you have the burgundy Amazon cover for the Oasis.
I have that one as well and I’m not sure why - but I’ve noticed it significantly drains my Oasis battery!
I recently switched to using a sleeve for it and there has been a DRAMATIC improvement - something for customers to keep in mind!
Have you noticed this issue in yours at all?
Anyway - keep up the great work and good luck with your channel!

I read anywhere and browse the internet and socmed anytime I'm bored, so I prefer a tablet rather than bring several devices with me. Sometimes I visit reddit/google when I'm in the middle of reading to (carefully) search for a forgotten character😅. Eye strain is real unfortunately, but the ipad mini 6 seems to be addressing a few of the disadvantages of using it as an ereader. Ordered a mini already and waiting for it to arrive, can't wait. Yup. I’ve been *very* tempted by the new iPad mini for use as an e-reader instead of a Kindle. Despite being the lightest iPad (10.4) oz) it’s still about 3 oz heavier than the new Paperwhite (7.23 oz). But, it’s infinitely more capable and versatile! And I’ve always wondered why the Kindle gets to advertise weeks long battery life whereas tablets use straightforward hours. The iPad’s 10 hour battery life works out to almost 3 weeks if you only use it for 30 minutes a day! And you could probably get another week out of it if you turn off WiFi, put it into airplane mode, and turn the display brightness down. Hey, I think I’ve almost convinced myself :-)

I think it's because LED backlit devices can't get away with the claim because you can see the battery drop by 10%-20% in a heavy session. Also, Amazon's claim that the Kindle has "weeks" of battery is borderline false advertising - remember they used to say "weeks and weeks" and changed it. I read a couple hours a day, and so I have to charge my Oasis once every 5-6 days. It never quite runs flat (because it starts popping up warnings at under 20%), but I'd have to cut my reading by "hours and hours" a week to get "weeks" of battery life...

    • @-johnny-deep-

@@gospelofrye6881 All true! The e-Ink is the key difference. And I fully agree that Amazon is being deliberately misleading about the Kindle battery life to make it seem 30 times better than the iPad (4-6 weeks for Kindle versus 1 day for iPad). As I said, if the iPad was advertising the same way, it could claim three weeks battery life ... (at 30 minutes of use per day). (and PS - your 3 hours a day of Oasis use for 6 days amounts to a total of only 18 hours, which is not even twice as good as the iPad.)

No matter how small or fancy the ipad mini is.. it still hurts my eyes after reading on it for an extended period of time, especially at night when there is no ambient lighting around me.. While it might be a great all-in-one portable content consumption device, a Kindle is always going to be a better choice when it comes to reading..

Thank you for sharing , very helpful ! One thing that is quite important for me is the function in the Books app on an iPad of SPEAK. With the new voices of Siri the quality is very good and very human-like and so I find myself using it often to read the books to me while I’m reading simultaneously (I am not a native English speaker and that is a good practice).

Great discussion... I think a purchaser has to seriously consider where they intend to use the device most of the time. The new Kindle will be 30% lighter than the new IPad Mini. If I were on public transportation or in a coffee shop reading eBooks, I suspect I will be less of a target for robbery using a Kindle than an Apple device (as the Kindle device format does not scream new / expensive). $140 vs $500 is a big price difference as well. The biggest benefit is the weeks of time between charges that means you do not worry about finding a charging opportunity during a week-long vacation. Finally, who wants to test dropping a IPad in a bathtub or pool while reading a book? - Kindle for the Win.

I love seeing a video on the mini that is dedicated to reading. Just a reading video on any iPad in general is perfect for me. I thought I was going to get the mini last month. But I then received an iPhone and air as a gift. I am still using my old mini for reading but it’s getting outdated. Slowish. I do love that it has thick bezels. Easy to hold while reading versus the new mini might be but the mini screen is bigger than my old mini. Which I think I’ll enjoy better. More words on the screen for me to read so I don’t spend changing pages often like I do on my current mini. I currently read often on my other iPad because it holds more words per page. It’s easier on my eyes for that. Which my current mini was a bigger screen. I think I need to get the new mini. The air sometimes is too big for certain scenarios. Reading in bed.
Thanks for that night shift mode. I will set a schedule. I definitely like having dark mode for reading at night in the books app. Was reading at 1am the other night and my eyes were hurting a bit on the gray color and remembered I can switch it to black. Was able to finish the chapter with relaxed eyes lol.

The Paper white is much easier on the eyes. It also is smaller which is easier to hold. Having to charge the iPad every day or every other day is a deal breaker for me. My paperwork can adjust to low light too. I'm not in the Apple ecosystem so the iPad holds nothing special I can't do on my pixel or my Laptop which has a built in pen. Bonus, I paid $98 after taxes for a reconditioned model which is pristine.

    So conflicted
Trying out my friends kindle paper white and I feel like my eyes are straining more reading on it vs. my iPad mini
I really want to make the switch to kindle but I like the slick look of Apple, the screen size, the diversity of it.
But on kindle I like that I could read jt outdoors, it’s lighter, and it’s waterproof.
Id feel much better bring a kindle for travel vs my iPad but idk.

I have an iPad mini 6th gen and am thinking about purchasing a kindle. I’m on the fence about it and the two primary reasons leaning me towards the kindle is battery life and eye strain. I guess I’ll continue doing my research and see if I pull the trigger or not! 😅

iPad mini (as a replacement for a Kindle) makes sense for a minimalist who doesn't want to have multiple electronic devices AND who is an avid reader like yourself. An avid reader doesn't need the discipline to read. Whereas, as a casual/reluctant book reader like myself, having a compartmentalized product to dedicate reading on really is a game changer. I read more now than I ever have before thanks to the Kindle. (I've had plenty of small tablets before). Yes, there's a "focus" feature on the iPad and that's great, but knowing that the whole world of entertainment behind the reading app is waiting for you to tap on is really a temptation someone like myself would have a hard time resisting. But, yes, ipad mini is awesome and this is coming from an anti-Apple.

When I decided to trade my iPad pro for an iPad Mini I did have the intension to use it for reading, but for month I just can't seems to use the iPad Mini to read, because as soon as I pick up the device there's hundreds more ideas of to do on the iPad than reading. And after that I decided to invest in an kindle and it have works wonders. I can just kept reading from my kindle and I don't even want to stop reading sometime. I think it's better for me to have a device that's dedicated to reading and nothing more.

I watched so many iPad Mini videos already and I think it is an amazing device. My problem with it: it offers too many distractions. Currently I have an iPad Pro 2018; I guess I will buy the next iPad Air or iPad Pro 11 and keep reading on my kindle, that does not alway scream in my ear: "come on - watch youtube!" or "open Twitter" or "did you read your mails already?"

I tried with Books App but the search result is so limiting where I can’t find what I am looking - for instance Atlantis by Edgar Cayce, Letters a Father To His Daughter by Jawaharlal Nehru, Energy Medice by Edgar Cayce, The After Life Book by Jennie Reed … The search result with Book App only gives me limited range n doesn’t give me unlimited range of books, periodicals, magazine, newspapers so on … any tips regarding this where I can get what I am searing via Book App like the way gets the search result with kindle

For me... hmmm.... still kindle is the best device for reading.. I really love the experience during using kindle when I could totally focus and immersed in my reading activities.
If i'm using Ipad, it's true I could use all of that feature that you mentioned to help me focus enough during my read.... but... there's always temptation to distract my self from my reading to doing other activities such us playing games, browsing, emailing, etc, because... hey.... it's there, in one device, just with simple click and then Voila...hahaha...
And also, I still have the eye strain problem even though I tried to minimize the blue ray effect by those features you mentioned...
So for me, kindle still is the best device if you totally want to focus on your reading
But don't get me wrong... Ipad mini is awesome device for everything you need and I really really love mine... LOL
Awesome review btw... Thank you so much ^^

Nice, thank you. Would be great to get sense of how large A4 or "Letter" sized PDFs (like lots of academic papers) render on the Mini. I imagine everything gets scaled down and illegible, requiring one to zoom and then move the zoom focus as one reads? And I guess somewhat out of scope, but crucial follow-on to that is how annotation is done and synced to things like Zotero. I know, totally different world. Just voicing what I'd like to know 😅

I am an avid reader and I have a kindle Oasis (the older model) but I still prefer to read on the Ipad mini 5, the print is more refined and it has a nighttime option while my older oasis does not, also when a book has graphs or pictures the Ipad is clearly better. I want to upgrade my Kindle as the battery life has become sad, but I don't think the new oasis is worth it, Amazon by now have done a lot better, they're not even colour yet and the battery is not great for just an E-ink device also it is not USB C (WTF). SO I'm upgrading my Ipad and waiting for the next generation of Oasis.
