Working out is a privilege

  • Working out is a privilege. Never forget this fact and every workout will be awesome. Having joints that allow you to have delicious workouts is a gift as is having enough time to lift weights consistently. Many in America have to work so many hours that fitness can’t be a priority. Older folk like myself often have joint issues bad enough that working out is either very limited or not possible at all. Next time you workout, don't think of it as something you “have to” do but something that you are very fortunate to be able to do.
My right shoulder needs a total replacement which is a very serious surgery. It's not an injury, it'as simply worn out. It might be from years of beach volleyball, it might be from swimming, or it might be from 40 years of lifting. Right now, there are very, very few exercises I can do with my shoulder in this condition but I literally treasure the few I can do.
I have to stifle the urge to pillow scream when some young adult with perfect joints who could do any exercise they want asks "how can I stay motivated to workout?".
I have been working out daily since 1983 because I love how it makes me feel, makes me sleep better, and lowers stress. I do 2-4 weight workouts a week and 5-20hrs of hiking or biking a week.
What I now tell these people who complain they cant get motivated is to simply not bother because lifting weights wears out the joints. Wait until your doctor tells you that exercise is a matter of life or death for you and THEN you will have motivation to workout and you will have healthy unused joints to work with.

Exactly Scooby, great vid. Most people don't understand how entitled we are, how ungratefully we treat our lives. We should be thankful for being able to walk or use our arms. I've torn my meniscus in the knee and I was falsely diagnosed by my orthopedist after waiting 3 months (thanks free healthcare system!). I ended up walking with a swollen and inflammed knee for 10 months straight, couldn't bend my knee all the way. I also was in a big pain EVERY DAY, stuffing myself with medication (which didn't work) and painkillers.
It really made me grateful how I was able to walk 10 kilometers without any issues, how I was able to do squats, and how I used to be able to hike in the forest without any problems. All of that was gone. This experience really taught me a valuable lesson. It is an unfortunate reality - we don't treat things (or people) properly before we lose them!

It truly is uncle scoob. Im 32, (subscribed since I was 17) and weightlifting, fitness in general was always a huge part of my life until recently diagnosed with health condition that essentially limits my ability to lift heavy and do traditional lifts in order to prevent further progression. Luckily despite the restriction to lift heavy and workout at my old intensity I found that I could still get stimulation on major muscles with high reps(25+) with extremely light weight and resistance bands. It's different and miss the barbell but I learned to find joy and love my new routine. It's better than not being able to at all. Exercising is amazing for the mind and body and truly is a privilege for anyone that has no health issues preventing them from grinding. Keep up the great content.

In junior high (circa 1976), I started working out with my buddy Dennis. In July of 2000, he got Lymphoma ( I can't recall which type) and for a long time during chemo he couldn't work out. I realized how lucky I was that I could still lift. To this day, down in my home gym, I still have a picture of him on the wall, bloated from chemo with 'Do it for Denny' written underneath. It reminds me that there may be times when you can't lift or exercise so appreciate the time when you can do it for as long as you can.

Exactly! There was a time in my life when I really didn't have time for any fun. I'd get up at the crack of dawn, travel to one job, then go to another job, go to the gym on the way home, take a bath, sleep, start again the next day. On weekends, housework, cooking a week ahead, and taking care of my parents. For two years, I couldn't read a book or watch a movie. But I could never cut out exercise, because I knew that if I did, depression would overcome me and I'd hang myself. It was my only weapon against breakdown, and it saved my life.

Similar to this wonderful Scooby1961 video, I have learned to fall in love with the PROCESS rather than the GOAL (of art, hobbies, and more). I realized only then do I ever make progress in anything. A goal hyperfocuses on the END rather than the necessary PROCESS that builds to that point. A goal also heavily implies "once you get it, that is it," but many things in life are more process oriented and require work to make it to a goal and a continuous process to keep it effective. Combining them creates a continuous line of ongoing processes with little goal points spread over it. This combination appears to be the most effective: having a goal in mind, but putting extra attention on living within and experiencing through the process.

Hi from Canada! 😊 I agree, we need to be grateful for our blessings and advantages while we have them. I'm just over 60 myself and in bad shape to be honest, but still fit enough to do something about it! All my life muscle building has lurked in the back of my mind, and a life-long admiration for men who are in good, healthy shape brought me to your YT. Aside from a few courses in college and periodic memberships at the Y, my own fitness journey has been negligible. After the recent passing of several close family members and friends (my only living relations are now far away in the Netherlands), I awoke from grieving for four years to realize I must do something about my crappy health. My goals are to stabilize my energy throughout the day, gain strength and flexibility to prevent falls (had two nasty ones recently), and work on building a healthier physique. I prefer a Mediterranean-type cuisine so that should help. After bingeing on several of your videos today, I subscribed 🙂 I hope your videos and newsletter steer me in a good direction. You are an inspiration! Btw, never mind anyone's prudishness, keep wearing those Speedos! I love it, you look awesome! 😉

Working out every day is quite taxing on the cartilage of your joints (depending on the weights being used ofcourse).
The body needs recuperation. Time to repair.
For longevity working out that often is not needed.
Clarence Bass comes up. He does a once a week weight workout and once a week cardio, from what I read from him.
Then again, for people who feel better working out every day, keep doing it, ofcourse.
It's often also adviced to people who have a light depression. Do sports. Run, bike, workout. Whatever fits you best.

Scooby, you're an expert fitness person (among other things) but here you're showing your lack of understanding of psychology.
People are different. They live different lives. Problems from one life do not translate to another one, and the solutions that one person has, may not serve as solutions for another person.
I get it that you feel it's unjust. You want to be mobile and yet you have limitations; and people who do not value sports as much as you do, happen not to have these limitations (some people at least). Yup, it be that way sometimes. But you won't change it or come to peace with it by moaning about it. And I'm saying this with the best intent. Kudos, and thank you for the channel.

I had to unfortunately scale down most of my weightlifting, I'm 30 and I have massive problems with my left shoulder, I have to save it for my 60s so that I can still use it. Fortunately, this channel inspired me, I have replaced lifting almost completely with cycling and I cycle a 100kms a week, religiously and I always make sure to cycle in nature, to be in contact with it more, cycling in cities stresses me out.
Thank you for everything you do Uncle

What are the massive problems? Doctors in 2024 are often hysterical with the "never do x" stuff. You should be lifting weights. Don't make your shoulder hurt, but you have to use it and make it stronger.
Does barbell overhead press hurt your shoulder? It completely fixed my surgically repaired shoulder.

@@SK-2ill Overhead stuff is completely impossible, pullups are impossible. Whenever I hold anything heavier in my left hand and try to lift it even moderately, it hurts as hell + makes weird sounds. It's a joint problem. I am scheduled for a CT.
In any case, I do gaintaining cable stuff, limited range of motion movements, crunches and legs. I have been lifting consistently and heavily every week for 10 years (that's probably how I screwed it up in the first place anyway) so I have a solid musculature already, I am fine with maintaining it and instead focusing on my VO2 max and improvements to mitochondrial function thru 6-10h of cardio a week, that's where my goals shifted at this point in life.

@@Viflo get that figured out soon, 0 capacity for overhead lifting at age 30 is no bueno.

@Viflo Rotator cuff issues? You probably have been overworking yourself for years like you said. Anyone that claims " there is no such thing as overtraining" is a BS artist.

@@JbgunnerisFINISHED This isn't Scooby's fault by any stretch of the imagination, English is not my first language, I've been watching him since 2007 and he's always been calling it "injury". It's only now that I realized "injury" doesn't mean an acute problem that needs immediate medical attention, but overtime damage.
      Now I know :)

I 100% agree with this. I feel healthier mentally and perform better at work because I work out. I am in an office or lab all day constantly looking at screens so going to the gym is the perfect break.

Hey Scooby... 16 years ago your videos and knowledge helped me go from 276lbs to 190lbs. ... Back at 230lbs I'm rewatching your 6 pack abs series circa 2008. Can you do a new video about the nutrition label and FDA dropping calories by fat. Can you explain how to calculate that with the new label? It sure would help! Thanks!
