      sadly no, I kinda wish at some point he'd do a Classics review of any of Sparklehorse's album, or maybe now give Dark Night Of The Soul a score, after a decade

    Woah, I forgot about what the label had done with this release, and it's nice to see melon had principles even way back when.
    RIP Mark Linkous 🌹

    Very well said. As for myself I bought the album when Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse released it themselves, and I kinda hoped there wouldn't be an official release as there was. What's even worse is the digital release includes bonus tracks, which is like EMI saying "Sorry we were fuckwads about this whole thing, here's some instrumentals, that makes everything better right?"
    I also wanna say R.I.P Vic Chesnutt, who sang on one song on this album.

    I found out about the album just this week in 2024 and learning that it was sabotaged by it's own label is the most heartbreaking thing. It's such a beautiful album ): Love specially "Revenge" feat. Flaming Lips and "Stars Eyes (I Can't Catch It)" feat. David Lynch. Like, what a project. Such a sad thing

    Part3. (yup a trilogy post, this is Return of the Jedi) I think a great question of the week would be: "Is it a good thing for talented artists to be able to find themselves in studios and working with producers/mixers/engineers that they in no way could afford in a 100 years?" -or to re-phrase: "Is it a good thing for record labels and record contracts to exist?"

    i think what you said about the music industry is totally right and i agree with you but still i wonder how you like the songs on there. it would be special if you could a part2 to this review, appreciating the songs on there and not let it be put to waste by the money-factory that wants to suck it out and throw it away.

  • @theneedledrop
    @theneedledrop  14 років тому +3

    @finalmattasy If you sign away your rights as an artist, you're responsible for the outcome. I understand, and realize the "contract" isn't going to die out even if the major labelsl go bankrupt. My problem lies with the ethics of refusing to release a piece of music to the public, but then deciding the time is right when one of the major creative minds on the album is dead. Sure, Capitol had the "right" to withhold the music, but does that mean we should stand by and just accept it as right?

  • @eviltoastman
    @eviltoastman 12 років тому +2

    Also Danger Mouse himself released this on a single LP bootleg. Some report it sounds awful. I own the boxed set and the bootleg and the bootleg is absolutely fine.

  • @finalmattasy
    @finalmattasy 14 років тому +1

    Part1. I can imagine that artists may feel angry that their stuff is being held back; but also that the artists experienced/experience the support of the label(s) that they have agreed to sign with. In order for people like me to know about guys like sparklehorse or danger mouse (and for them to exist) there has to be somebody paying for instruments, studios, meals, houses, transportation, publicity...... whether labels are crooked or just monetarily sensible is entirely case by case.

  • @TerrierBram

    I could have save his soul man. Left alone the song Revenge, to start with. Ace. Very good. And over time I can decide how solid it is. But sounds pretty like it. What a pity situation. And why somebody who makes this level of music commits suicide. Mixed emotions with this album. But the content stroke me already, for sure.

    EMI has pretty much had a beef with Danger Mouse since he did that Grey Album using the Beatles samples. I think he should just stop dealing with them because they clearly haven't gotten over it.

    I feel as if the concept and content of this entire album is all about the industry, the people who control the intellectual property of the artist and the way in which they manipulate advertising, the media, and the image of the artist. Mark Linkous and Dangermouse and everyone else on this album have had battles with major record labels, this album and piece of work as a whole is loaded with hidden meaning, references and symbols.

    @VacuumBoots81 Where are people coming up with this stuff? Mark was a friend of mine, and he was definitely eager for this to be released. EMI didn't fail to release it because they didn't like it, it was a contractural dispute with Danger Mouse's label. This is not just some rumor, he told me this himself!
    To suggest that EMI is just cashing in now because Mark is no longer with us, is just convenient speculation.

    It would perhaps be better to just pay money directly to Dangermouse, Sparklehorse, etc. and get the album from bit torrent to bypass EMI. Tasteless actions on the labels behalf. Great commentary on it TND.

  • @VacuumBoots81
    @VacuumBoots81 14 років тому

    @wooboy11 I don't think that's quite what he is saying. It seems suspect when a label doesn't release an album while the artist is still living simply because its not the album they wanted and then turnaround and release it after the artist's suicide. For whatever reason, the label didn't think the album would make a profit at the time and therefore didn't release it. Yet, because of the suicide, there is a lot more profit to be made off of his final studio album--an increase in public interest.

  • @wooboy11
    @wooboy11 14 років тому

    ok, so we shouldn't release anything from the beatles, jimi hendrix, joplin, etc.
    I don't agree, but I see your point.

  • @CitizenCane92
    @CitizenCane92 14 років тому

    Well, the record industry is collapsing in on itself. Musician's are starting to be able to release music their own ways, and through their own means, Soon enough moments like these won't happen. I think that will basically mean that music won't be so totally controlled by the industry anymore.

    @TerrierBram I know man. It is really weird that he committed suicide when he was making some good music.

  • @wooboy11
    @wooboy11 14 років тому +1

    well, he did get much more attention after his suicide, so why not release the album? I don't think they released the album because he committed suicide, but rather because he got much more attention from the suicide.
    Of course money is always a big part of the plans of ANY label, but to think they only released the album because of the money is a rather judgmental statement.
    You can look at other points of review, like for example, they might be wanting to pay a tribute or something.

  • @finalmattasy

    @theneedledrop agreed... but making money off of dead artists is as old as a painting on a wall. Should Capitol not put it out? Or wait for the death to be forgotten? I totally agree that it's cheezy and cheap though. I think it's the audience's fault for not appreciating living artists equally. Then again, who isn't insurmountably fascinated by death? God Bless!!

    Part2. So yah, case by case. In THIS case, I think it's unfortunate that the Fantanoman would go off on a rant about people and relational/business decisions that he apparently doesn't know the details of. Anthony is (apparently) assuming that these artists are being held in cages against their will regarding THEIR relationships with the labels THEY have signed with.

    • @finalmattasy
      @finalmattasy 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure how i felt when i wrote this. I think of it like any relationship, some things are expected, other things happen.. is it legal?..
      People are right to think that a relationship is good looking, and right to change their mind.. whoever wants to do whatever does it, and that's the organism.

    • @finalmattasy
      @finalmattasy 3 роки тому

      ...i think labels and artists find each other because they have confidence in each other, and that confidence is based upon everything they can assemble as far as opinions go.. so it works out, and fate wins.

    XX? What is this porn. Nah, just kidding. But uh this is very sad man. Mark Linkous would not be happy about this block in releasing the album. I found the band Sparklehorse from a collab with Raidohead on the soundtrack of Lords Of Dog Town. When I searched up Sparklehorse I saw that Mark committed suicide. I was pissed when I saw this, cause the guy could have had a good future. He also just ended his life. But god, I hate the big music labels. Most of them are capitalist bastards.
