This has reinforced what I have always believed, apart from the fact that animals are sentient beings, I truly most wholeheartedly believe that they have a sort of personhood about them. They are not just mindless creatures and the buttons are an incredible avenue for them to express themselves.

This is a sweet video. Animals also often recognize sign language and movement for communication really well. My dog Gracie and I often "talk" that way...I have some specific movements for things like "sit", "come here",etc. and her barks vary in tone according to what she see/wants. And she has specific movements for "outside" or "come this way", things like that. Wish I'd trained her with buttons but she's 11 this year and I don't know if she could learn them.

I know exactly what this last woman is talking about. It was 1990, my parents and me got our first pet, a sausage dog pup. That lil rascal got only 1 year old. He was sick, terribly sick and we were too inexperienced to listen to signs and indications he was maybe trying to give. When he was on someone's arm he appeared fine but whenever he was on the ground he walked along the walls of the room forever.
He died that Friday night in his kennel screaming like hell. We thought it's just the seperation from us. The next morning he was dead. Until today I feel the urge for compensation. I have still something to repair, to make it good again. If I'll ever get a dog again, I will get such a board too and teach it at least the basics of communication !

I wish I had known about this communication system a number of years ago. We had a cat who would have excelled in using them. My spunky young gal seems interested but intimidated. I haven't tried it with my senior. He gets whatever he wants anyway, but I'd like to help him have a voice. I am trying to figure out how to add their names so I can tell who wants what. I have trained before, but I really don't want to mess up the button experience. I think I am overthinking it. A few years of watching Bunny and Billi (the cat) finally inspired me to try my own. I could only afford 4 buttons right now. I can buy more buttons, but it's the batteries that hurt lol. This is a wonderful study. I am so glad that the people have found a way to enhance their animal companion lives. I was a vegetarian for years then I went back to eating meat. I do feel some guilt because everything has an innate desire to live and thrive whether it is an insect or an dog. On the other hand the truth of all life is that one being feeds on another in some way to survive. Scientists theorize that is how we got mitrocondria in our nucleuses. One ancient microbe consumed the mitrocondria but instead of dying the mitrocondria survived and eventually the host cell and the mitocondria formed a symbiotic relationship. So I think for me instead of shunning animal products it is about finding products that were raised in a more humane way. I know this is not a perfect solution but it works for me. Also many of the animals like sheep that have been bred for human desired traits would not survive without us. The domesticated sheep will die from the weight of the wool if it is not shorn regularly. Peace all

I love how spite what is being said and reported by these "button experiments" people still separate humans from animals. Humans ARE animals. The cognitive gap between humans and other animals isn't as big as you'd think.

I wish Fluent Pet would develop a system of buttons that plug into USB or some other style of power rails.
I would gladly pay the few hundred dollars for 100 buttons, but I simply can't afford to buy hundreds of batteries for them.

Humans always have the perception of knowing what the intention and state of mind of another creature is. Oftentimes it is called empathy. The trouble is that people rarely have the perception not to know what the other thinks.
I have no idea how one might have the idea that an animal does not have a state of mind with feelings, but to assume that it is the same as that of a human is equally idiotic.

I have 2 sweet and beautiful male flatcoated retrievers, aged 5 and 8. I’m very interested in using these buttons to deepen my conversation with them. But I’m wondering if it makes sense at their age, or if they are simply too old now to learn this…. Can anyone advise? Many thanks!

I think Billi the cat started using buttons when she was 10 or 11 (?), so it doesn't seem like you have to start from when they're really young. It might be worth a try!

I bet people are afraid to try the buttons because they don’t want to face knowing they could have done more for past pets.

That's great! What kind of fur baby are you going to introduce them to? Bunny, and also Todd, the very smart tuxedo cat at a channel called *_"Do you know Todd?"_* are my favorites so far, of these types of videos. It's very enlightening and educational to watch these. I so wish I had the buttons decades ago with the dogs I had, though I taught my dogs many words to understand, their ability to communicate with me was hampered by my inability to discern the meaning of their facial expressions and body movements. My Jack, a Great Dane/Akita mix, so smart and so human-like that I trained so greatly would have used them immensely, I'm sure, and Service Dog Nellie, a very sweet and talented, affable Golden, would have also used them. It's a case of *_"I wish I had known then what I know now!"_* Being unaware and unknowledgeable of *_just_* how aware and smart they were, I believe, was a type of handicap to me, being clueless of so much. Watching these has changed my thinking and my heart to having a *_far_* greater level of respect for the creatures than I had before. It has opened my eyes. I wish you and your critter well in your endeavor with the *_Fluent Pet_* buttons. How exciting for you. I imagine the bond between you will deepen immensely with increased communication and the enhanced respect that communication can offer. 😍🐕

@@cacatr4495 Hello! First off I wanted to say that I have a brain lesion and so I may miss responding to a lot of things you said and I might not make sense. If so, I'm so sorry! I'll try my best.
On November 8th my precious boy Toby died in my arms from the dog COVID that has been going around. He was 8 years old. I was broken. Completely broken. I didn't think I could get another dog because I couldn't go to this heartbreak again. Well Chance happened that I met up with an old friend who had a $3,500 goldendoodle mini F1B 9-month-old pup that she was in over her head with because she's really busy and couldn't give him the love and attention he needed. Long story short, he's mine now. He's the most amazing bundle of joy ever! I'm so beyond blessed to have him in my life. I had no idea that I was as broken as I was until now when I am so happy and back to my own self again. I'm having so much fun training him and doing everything from the start. Like you, I've had so much experience with dogs. And all of this new technology and just everything they know now, just blows my mind. It's exciting to get to try it! Do you think you may ever think about getting another dog again? I think you should. 🫶💖
