The ramifications these buttons could have for animal rights and animal justice could be seismic! I'm looking forward to sanctuaries giving these buttons to pigs and cows too. I know there's at least one cow learning to use these and I've seen her ask for help after knocking something over.

If dogs can honestly express themselves so well, imagine what the future will look like if a device were created so that their barks, growls, noises could be translated through a small speaker connected to their collars like the movie Up.

This has reinforced what I have always believed, apart from the fact that animals are sentient beings, I truly most wholeheartedly believe that they have a sort of personhood about them. They are not just mindless creatures and the buttons are an incredible avenue for them to express themselves.

I know exactly what this last woman is talking about. It was 1990, my parents and me got our first pet, a sausage dog pup. That lil rascal got only 1 year old. He was sick, terribly sick and we were too inexperienced to listen to signs and indications he was maybe trying to give. When he was on someone's arm he appeared fine but whenever he was on the ground he walked along the walls of the room forever.
He died that Friday night in his kennel screaming like hell. We thought it's just the seperation from us. The next morning he was dead. Until today I feel the urge for compensation. I have still something to repair, to make it good again. If I'll ever get a dog again, I will get such a board too and teach it at least the basics of communication !

This is a sweet video. Animals also often recognize sign language and movement for communication really well. My dog Gracie and I often "talk" that way...I have some specific movements for things like "sit", "come here",etc. and her barks vary in tone according to what she see/wants. And she has specific movements for "outside" or "come this way", things like that. Wish I'd trained her with buttons but she's 11 this year and I don't know if she could learn them.

This is a wonderful study. I am so glad that the people have found a way to enhance their animal companion lives. I was a vegetarian for years then I went back to eating meat. I do feel some guilt because everything has an innate desire to live and thrive whether it is an insect or an dog. On the other hand the truth of all life is that one being feeds on another in some way to survive. Scientists theorize that is how we got mitrocondria in our nucleuses. One ancient microbe consumed the mitrocondria but instead of dying the mitrocondria survived and eventually the host cell and the mitocondria formed a symbiotic relationship. So I think for me instead of shunning animal products it is about finding products that were raised in a more humane way. I know this is not a perfect solution but it works for me. Also many of the animals like sheep that have been bred for human desired traits would not survive without us. The domesticated sheep will die from the weight of the wool if it is not shorn regularly. Peace all

My spunky young gal seems interested but intimidated. I haven't tried it with my senior. He gets whatever he wants anyway, but I'd like to help him have a voice. I am trying to figure out how to add their names so I can tell who wants what. I have trained before, but I really don't want to mess up the button experience. I think I am overthinking it. Can they ask the dogs why they specifically need to pee on the carpet?

I bet people are afraid to try the buttons because they don’t want to face knowing they could have done more for past pets.

How can I get in touch with this foundation?! I have an 11 year old crazy intelligent Mountain Feist and I want so so much to know what she has to say especially starting as an elder dog. How??? I see them on Amazon but I really want assistance to know I'm doing this right for her.

I have 2 sweet and beautiful male flatcoated retrievers, aged 5 and 8. I’m very interested in using these buttons to deepen my conversation with them. But I’m wondering if it makes sense at their age, or if they are simply too old now to learn this…. Can anyone advise? Many thanks!

I think Billi the cat started using buttons when she was 10 or 11 (?), so it doesn't seem like you have to start from when they're really young. It might be worth a try!

its not just dogs. Its most animals. Also the ones we usually eat like cows and pigs. Pigs are probably more intelligent than dogs.

I've heard it said that pigs are very intelligent. Like other species, they have a design-purpose on and for the Earth, to clean the land, somewhat similar to, but different from coyotes, vultures and ravens, etc., just as bottom-feeders and shellfish clean the waters. Tests have been done with heavily polluted water, such that "harvesting" shellfish was prohibited there, so that they could multiply to appropriately high and abundant numbers, and they went back and tested that water every year, and as the shellfish increased in number, the water became clean, and then pristine in its purity; shellfish are living filters. Man has not understood that all the species have their innate design purpose, just as butterflies, bees and hummingbirds pollinate the vegetation. So too do the keystone species, equines and elephants nourish the land in their respective regions, due to their singular stomach that passes along a great quantity of nutrients, enzymes and minerals, together with germinated seeds, such they they feed and re-seed the Earth, which benefits everyone. Man has largely been clueless in not perceiving the purposes and needs of the creatures, only thinking about how whatever animal can suit his temporal desires. Man has much to learn.

In the words of Martin Luther King Jr.: “One day the absurdity of the almost universal human belief in the slavery of other animals will be palpable. We shall then have discovered our souls and become worthier of sharing this planet with them.”
