I can remember the last days of tinned rations, some of those we were given evoked similar feelings to this stuff...mostly alright, but now and then it was touch-and-go.
The marzipan taste may be rancid oil or shortening. Unlike hardtack, many ration buiscuits contained oil or shortening to make them soft and better tasting.
