Mr. Basil Rathbone was INDEED the greatest Sherlock Holmes that has ever lived! NO ONE comes close to him as he always delivers Holmes as a sharp, intelligent, quick witted, and master crime solver of all time! Thank you for the great memories!
Basil was a hero in the war. He was a great Gentleman and one of the finest actors of all time . What a legend ! I love him and it's so sad he passed away in 1967. His wife did love the parties and he had to work to pay for them . He loved acting and was stereotyped as Sherlock Holmes. He was like lugosi and Chaney he will always be Sherlock Holmes! What a fine man , long live his memory!
The parties were a responsibility given to the Rathbone’s by the British Consulate. They served in this way during WW2. Basil Rathbone was in the Great War.
He may have been typecast as Sherlock Holmes but he is the best Sherlock Holmes. No one has played that role better than him. It’s amazing to hear this interview with him and very interesting to learn these different things about his life.
What a little beauty of an interview you have got here. I love basil rathbone as sherlock holmes, nigel bruce as watson. Well basil your movies from 1939-1946 are still watched today. Terriffic actor and what i would give to spend an afternoon chatting to this man. His quote on giving actors stardom far to early is correct. Heaps of money and fame and it destroys alot of them. Its still happening today bssil. Took basil 14 years to master his part. A true genius of acting. In which wee rarely see today. This is 2019. In 20 years wee will be at 100 years since The Hound Of The Baskervilles, and The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes. R.I.P my friend. You are in history as one of the very very best, if not thee best portrayals of Sherlock Holmes.
Yes I agree. He says 14 years till he got to grips with is part and then goes to say he is still learning. This voice is in this interview is the mark of a true gentleman. What a excellent interview.
Wonderful Basil Rathbone such a talented actor could play any role, just adore him. Would like to hear all the interview, lovely voice and very handsome ❤️ enjoy all his films.
I'm twenty-years-old, and I think that he is handsome! I've loved watching him in old movies with my Grandma! I've seen him in A Tale of Two Cities as the Marquis St. Evermonde. Of all the portrayals of that character which I've seen, his is the most powerful and convincing!
The great Basil Rathbone is one of my heroes. Amazing, beloved character actor, and the first true classic actor I ever took a serious interest in. I credit him for kick-starting my venture into classic film several years ago, and I've never looked back.
Mr Rathbone’s film career can basically be divided into three sections: Villain, Sherlock Holmes, and Horror. He was also a master fencer - witness “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “The Mark of Zorro.” Despite tiring of Holmes, he attempted a comeback in the role - in a couple of TV pilots, and in a stage play written by his wife! None were successful. He also recorded readings of some of the original stories. A great talent!
I can't watch any other actor playing Sherlock Holmes. I just can't get past the greatness of Basil Rathbone. They all seem impostors. Same, incidentally, for Nigel Bruce as Watson.
What a treat! Thank you so much for sharing this - Basil Rathbone, childhood legend now explained and unveiled as a man beyond the actor. Truly appreciated!
TY very much for this upload, a wonderful interview with one of my favorite actors. Interesting how Basil Rathbone quickly glossed over his Hollywood years. Ouida was a constant drain on him physically, financially & mentally, what he chooses not to say, is more telling than his spoken words. He had to keep working right to the end of his life, purely to furnish her lavish & spendthrift lifestyle.
Today there are no genuine actors no talent all movies consist off action and no acting. Oh! how Basil Rathbone could teach up and coming actors with master classes on how to become not just good actors but to take the time to learn the craft which may take many years to become to the pineal of their careers. Basil was a true master of the art of acting who was so versatile a true gentleman and such a handsome man with a voice like velvet.
Love it. Thanks. I agree with his points about the english accent, there is no such thing, I grew up speaking English in Scotland, my favourite voices of English are East African, it sounds so beautiful.
Basil Rathbone career was incredible considering he was born in 1892, which would meant he would have been in his mid 40s when he appeared with Errol Flynn in the Adventures of Robin Hood. Apparently he kept in good shape by having daily fencing exercises.
Well they did do just that in American news broadcasts they taught everyone a generally midwestern accent for the greatest national acceptance. It's considered the most "neutral." Thats a fact we learned in broadcasting school. Of course it didn't start until well after Rathbone had passed, so he was prophetic.
D4661b. Delos Records (Delos Film Buff Series), Pacific Palisades, c1975. DEL/F 25412. 2 sides, 12 in., 33 rpm. Contents include: [on side 1] Basil Rathbone (length 9 minutes). The album includes interviews by Tony Thomas with Edward G. Robinson, Basil Rathbone, Walt Disney, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Stan Laurel. Tony Thomas was appointed a producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's radio magazine program "Assignment" at the network headquarters in Toronto, and interviewed Rathbone in December 1958, when Rathbone had been brought to Toronto by the CBC to recite "The Night Before Christmas" on television. The Rathbone interview includes less than 2 minutes about Sherlock Holmes. Broadcast date for the episode on the CBC?
As most people do, Rathbone uses the word "accent" in place of "dialect". Accents are one languages influence over another being spoken. An Italian speaks English with an Italian ACCENT. DIALECTS are variations within a language. English with an Southern accent for example. He mentions a standard "accent" for actors- devoid of accent. Impossible! Fascinating Interview!
@@DavesRabbitHole English is a special case. I think one might use the word accent to refer to English spoken in different countries. English spoke with an Australian or America accent should be correct, as opposed to English in the Cornwall dialect. But that's only my opinion.

I totally agree
Nigel Bruce was the best Watson also👍👍
Using my deductive reasoning, I would agree
I love Basil as holmes. He was terrific in nearly every role he took on. That said, Jeremy Brett personified the great detective to perfection.
Jeremy Brett far better
So handsome, so elegant, such a great actor, such a gentleman. His voice is so beautiful.
En cuanto a lo que mencionas, otro ejemplo a seguir.
Basil Rathbone was The Greatest ever!! What a Great voice he had!!

Regrettably his wife ruined him.

Heath Ledger comes to mind. Alone in New York with drugs. Could this have happened to B. Rathbone? If he had been a young star? Only he wasn't.
Yes I agree.
He says 14 years till he got to grips with is part and then goes to say he is still learning.

Never get tired of listening to his beautiful voice.❤
I absolutely love this man! He was such an amazing human being. ❤️
Courageous, empathic and sharp.
The best Sherlock Holmes ever thank you basil rathbone

He was *very* attractive ☺️
@@alabhaois Thanks! ♥I know that it's unusual for my age, but I watched a lot of old movies growing up...
pity we couldn't hear more of the interview. Thanks for what we had.
Such a gentleman, Basil was. No one does Holmes better. Articulate and intelligent. I love him so.
The great Basil Rathbone is one of my heroes. Amazing, beloved character actor, and the first true classic actor I ever took a serious interest in. I credit him for kick-starting my venture into classic film several years ago, and I've never looked back.
What a great actor and man. So gifted in so many ways.
Forever Sherlock Holmes. So beloved, is Basil Rathbone.
Wonderful to hear this. One of the greatest actors of all time.
Every five years or so I read all the Holmes stories all over again. About a dozen times now.
What a great interview, not dated but you feel your there! Love his spoken word . Thanks for posted.👏👍❤️
What a pleasure to hear his voice!

Fascinating! A magnificent and historic actor…the best Sherlock Holmes in my view 😊👍👍
None better!!!!!!! impossible to define the class and acting plus the beautiful spoken word accent of BR hes truly on another level !!!!
A wonderful human being. His family are scousers like me! We use to BMX at the “Rathbone” in Wavertree as kids.
Great interview. He was everything I hoped he was. I wish, in general,
Tony Thomas..The Canadian radio interviewer/host and producer conducted this conversation with Basil Rathbone at The CBC Radio Network in 1959.
The sound quality is incredible, a wonderful actor, I really enjoyed listening, thanks for sharing.
I can't watch any other actor playing Sherlock Holmes. I just can't get past the greatness of Basil Rathbone. They all seem impostors. Same, incidentally, for Nigel Bruce as Watson.
Absolutely agree.
Timeless, excellent actor.
I have had a consistent crush on this man for the past 6 years now😅❤️

Remarkable. Old school star.
Great interview and a great Sherlock
Listening to this, I cannot in my psyche separate Basil Rathborne from Sherlock Holmes. 😅
His war record is incredible So was Nigel Bruce's I recommend people read up on it So brave

Agree Basil Rathbone was magnificent actor another one in that class for me was Charles Laughton, actors who could actually act 👍
Rathbone, best Sherlock Holmes actor ♥️

I LOVE HIS ACTING
"Theataaaaa" - Love the accent.
Elegant, for sure. 😏
His younger brother was killed in the war.... Basil was very distraught over it... Very emotional reading... Rathbone is great man and actor...

Interesting that Jeremy Brett also had to have voice lessons. Both wonderful actors. RIP
More!More! More!

Mr. Rathbone has a marvelous strong voice all the more he's really equipped for various roles under his name simply the best!!!!😅😅😅😅

Legend

Man, if he didn’t die young, he would have been a much better Denethor!
Terribly terribly posh..don’t ya know old fruit ! Love him ! At the start of the interview he is very clipped, then it slips a bit .
Quality.
Is this a CBC interview? The interviewer has a very Canadian accent reminiscent of the era.
Was his mother really Irish?
WHEN WAS THIS INTERVIEW DONE?????
In the mid to late 50's. Not sure of the specific date.
This was recorded in Canada in the winter of 1958..when Mr.Rathbone was narrating"The Night Before Christmas"on The CBC TV Network.
