Installing Pontoon Vinyl Flooring on ALUMINUM DECK

- This has been one of those things discussed frequently, but this is the first video I've shared on the topic. When installing vinyl flooring on an aluminum of composite surface (non-plywood) you must use a solvent-based adhesive as typical indoor/outdoor flooring adhesives can't cure between the two non-porous surfaces. This video talks about that process and shows how to install the vinyl on your aluminum decked pontoon boat.

Great job, great video. Just completed this on my 24” deck a few weeks ago
Nice! Sorry I didn’t have the video up sooner for you! Hope it went smooth
Been waiting for you to do this video! We replaced old carpet, with the new teak vinyl. I would not do the removal process again! Ended up using a 4” wheel sander, again not easy and you are correct about it melting the old glue. We used ATT 390 Marine and exterior adhesive, non flammable. Good for aluminum and Marine grade plywood subfloor. It’s a glue, not a contact adhesive, soo much easier to use than contact adh. The floor has been down for 2 months and is secure and beautiful. Love your videos!
Thanks for sharing the adhesive you used and your results…I’m sure that install process moved along much faster and smoother! Pontoon Stuff advises their customers to use a solvent based option which is why I wanted to show the process. They’re playing it safe with that advice because when done correctly the solvent based adhesive will surely hold their flooring down for the long haul!
Good old fashion hard work right there! Nice Job!
Seems more and more like that's the only way to get stuff done! Thanks for watching!
Sweet! At some point im going to redo my 27' all aluminum floor. Yikes! Will be worth it, im sure. Thanks Tom 👍
Definitely worth it!! Just get it cleaned really well and work on it in chunks…you’ll get it done in an afternoon!
Thanks for making this video!!
Happy to help!
This is the video I needed!! Thanks!!
That’s what I was hoping for!!! Lots of aluminum decks out there from the early 2000’s that are finally needing some TLC!
Question - My 1995 aluminum deck has many small holes from various mounts over the years. Some water does seep/splash thru when running. Will this affect the flooring or the glue?
Thanks - your videos are outstanding.
Once the new flooring is glued down it really shouldn’t impact it negatively. I would consider adding underskinning to be safe, or add silicone from the bottom on places that water could potentially splash or spray up
Good explanatiom
Thanks! Hoping it'll help lots of DIY folks at home with their projects.
Hey Tom. Is this the same glue you would use on marine grade plywood that has been treated with a sealer? Thanks!
I would advise against sealing and if the marine grade treated plywood. It needs to breathe and dry when it gets wet. If it’s untreated and you sealed it then yes, you’ll likely need a solvent based adhesive (as long as it doesn’t interact negatively with the sealant). If you’re installing carpet and not vinyl you could use a regular carpet glue as the carpet breathes enough for the glue to cure
New to the channel and looking at pontoons to restore one and I live in Florida and they have some that have the aluminum floor seems like a good idea, but do you have any thoughts or opinions about that versus plywood floor?
Aluminum decks are great because they last forever. I still haven't taken on a whole aluminum floor project because it adds an insane amount of time getting the old flooring and glue off. The deck needs to be perfectly clean before adhering new vinyl to it, and the solvent based adhesive is 100% more tedious to use than rolling glue onto plywood. If you're going to be in saltwater then the plywood can cause some issues with corrosion...we're up here in freshwater so we don't worry about that at all. The plywood we install lasts 20-30 years anyway!
Thanks so much will be watching all the videos be be informed and use them as a step by step thanks again you have inspired me take this on instead of a boat payment with a new one and getting our materials and and all the rest from pontoon stuff
@@lancejenkins4910 Fantastic! It's the best feedback we can get when someone tells us our channel helped inspire them to take on the project. You'll be so happy with the end product and the money you've saved!
Is vinyl on aluminum hot in the sun?
It shouldn't be any different than when it's installed on wood. A hot day in the 90s under direct sun it'll get a bit hot, but just splash it down with water and it'll be good to go for a couple more hours. We've had black powder coated aluminum trim on our boat and it never felt very hot to the touch even on hot sunny days.
I AM grO0t
Thanks for watching Groot!
