- IBERIA Trip Report onboard one of their Airbus A330-300 from London-Heathrow to Madrid on a nice summer afternoon.
Late-August flight from London-Heathrow to Madrid onboard the IBERIA A330. We were, literally, 9 passengers onboard this Airbus A330. The experience onboard the IBERIA A330 was fantastic. We flew on the IBERIA Premium Economy seats and they provide huge space. Even more if the plane is empty.
The main reason why this flight was so empty is, probably, the mandatory quarantine upon arrival of passengers arriving in the UK from Spain. I felt really comfortable onboard IBERIA and really safe. Very attentive and engaging crew. Wishing the best for them in the future!

There are several reasons they keep these flights running with few passengers: To keep the airport slot positions open / to give the aircraft a run out (often rotating aircraft type to the normal schedule for this purpose) / to keep the pilots current (it looks like there was a check pilot in civvies on the flight deck jump seat when you walked past on disembarkation in Madrid).

I'm sure that as soon as the vaccine will start to be given to people, restrictions will tend to ease. What it's clear is that we must re-activate the economy, and aviation is a key part of it.

The reason that this flight operated was purely due to freight, the belly would have been full. IAG moves a massive amount of freight between Heathrow and Madrid, IAG's two hubs. Nothing to do with slots, if that was the case they could have used an A319.

Hi Lucas. Great video. Especially the landing shots at night into Madrid. But isn't it so sad to see Airports and flights so empty. Covid has really devastated the travel industry. Great to see you in the UK Lucas. And what a beautiful sunset ;-) Fantastic service by Iberia to give you some cheeky food when this service was not supposed to be open. And they gave you some water, better than some airlines we can think of ?? ;-( I also ask the question why such a big aircraft as it isn't as if the IAG Group have lots of money to burn during these harsh economic times ?? This flight is operated every day with A330 or A350 because of the cargo demand. Even if there are no passengers, probably the flight it's still profitable due to the cargo that goes in the cargo holds. Cargo that can' be transported on small A320/321.

I don't know mate... but this is terrible... the airline industry is suffering a lot and nobody seems to want to do anything to save it...
Maybe the vaccine will ease all this global psychosis and the travel restrictions could be lifted... I know the vaccine won't solve the problem in a moment, but, at least, it should be enough for these restrictions to ease a lot...

La verdad es que cuando grabé este vídeo, hace unas semanas, tuve muchos sentimientos encontrados: ver Heathrow así es algo que seguramente no vaya a volver a ver en mi vida. Dentro de unos años volveremos a este vídeo y nos impresionará aún más... sin embargo, el propio hecho de que esto esté sucediendo ahora es terrible... ver aviones vacíos es lo peor...
En fin, esperemos poder encontrar una solución efectiva rápidamente...

I know an Iberia pilot who told me they use the Madrid - London flights to verify new pilots on long haul ops. Idid this flight on the 350 a few months ago and they were signing off a newly rated captain.
Air Europa does a similar thing on the 787 between Madrid and Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona. A lot of fun to fly on.
It's partially true. What you say is completely true. However, there is a powerful economical reason for flying DAILY this plane to London since years ago: the cargo demand. This plane can take in its cargo holds a lot of cargo that would be impossible on an A320/321. That's the real reason why it's operated on a daily basis.
As you say, this flight is used sometimes for crew checks and that stuff. That was the case in this flight, for example. On the flight I've recorded there were 3 pilots in the cockpit, one of them was checking the other 2.

I had never been on a flight with 9 passengers before. Lowest was 30, but it was a full flight being an E145 with just 30 seats. This sounds nice and you could easily move to another seat too.
Neat video, Lucas. I was supposed to fly from heathrow last saturday but because it was cancelled due to Government travel advice. Thats the 2nd cancelled trip this year, so just a little bit jealous of those of you who can fly!! Booked a city break in February as a consolation. Im not holding out much hope of getting there, but at least its something to look forward to.

Madre mía, qué drama! Durante mucho tiempo volaba casi todas las semanas entre Madrid y LHR (siempre con BA o con IBerlia). Salvo excepciones, los vuelos iban siempre llenos, incluyendo aviones tipo A340, A350 o Boeing 777 (de BA). Ver así un avión es deprimente, la verdad.
Gracias por compartir la experiencia en cualquier caso.

Ojalá pronto podamos ver a la vieja normalidad o, al menos, a algo parecido...

I flew to London this Tuesday and we were 21 passengers in economy. (My latest video)
Iberia did probably not cancel this flight because the aircraft had to be in Madrid anyways.
It's what happens when you force to 14 days non-sense quarantines to anyone that arrives in your country. 7 months into this shit and countries were not able to make a test system to avoid this chaos... The aviation industry will recover from this, but it will take years. Governments seem to not know how important the aviation industry is for the economy and society in general...

I was lucky enought to take the same trip (moreover, on the mighty A340-600) in the opposite direction just days before the lockdowns started in March.
That's nice! I've flown the A340 2 times on this route as well... now they are retired from Iberia fleet so it's not possible any more. They were fantastic trips! (Both on the channel, of course) :)

Tengo una foto del avion, pasó por mi casa (lo único que se ve fatal, se ven las luces y ya) lo bueno, una vez ví un A359 de noche y lo pille perfectamente. Excelente vídeo y que bien por parte de Iberia de no cancelar el vuelo.

OMG!! I can’t believe there was only 9 passengers on that A330. It really shows how COVID is effecting international air travel, Especially with the UK imposing quarantine on flights from other countries. This really puts people off going anywhere, as they don’t or can’t afford the need to isolate for 2 weeks when they return! ✈️
I think exactly the same... Almost every country is implementing (or implemented already) a test system on airports to reduce or eliminate these crazy quarantines... as far as I know, this system is not in the UK airports... 😔
OnBoardHD yes, I agree! Testing is the way forward. You can be tested and have a result with in an hour in some places. I suspect the reason behind not doing it is cost and investment in infrastructure...✈️
@@richardnei The point is that, on a short-term, yes, there will be savings. But as soon as you have to invest more in health (more and more people going to hospitals) and giving unemployed people some monthly help (with numbers growing every month)... we could, easily, get to the conclusion that those tests are cheaper in the medium and long-term...

I had 1 crew seat just 3 rows ahead of me, so I've seen the crew during the whole flight :)
Curious to know how many came off the incoming flight, given that may have determined whether to keep the flight. I fly a lot Australia to Europe with Qatar and they are one of only a handful who have kept flights going, because they fly in fairly full and return to Doha pretty much empty, so I figure they must be at least breaking even and keeping planes circulating, because the cost of mothballing and maintaining is huge. If this Iberia flight had a similarly light pax load coming in, then makes no sense at all, as a loss is a loss, great for staff to keep their jobs, but yeh, very sad situation for many.

@@OnBoardHD Deberían ofrecer un test, vuelos así con pocos pasajeros no son rentables, es pérdida para la aerolínea.
Los tests en aeropuertos deberían estar disponibles... aunque no fuesen totalmente gratis... en fin .. veremos como sigue evolucionando la cosa...

The only thing I don't understand is why IB deployed the 330 for such a small amount of passengers (and not a smaller aircraft). Unless the pax number was higher on the previous leg, which I doubt. Otherwise great video and great afternoon views ! Thank you
This flight is always operated by an A330 or A350. There is a huge cargo demand on this route, so the reason to set this plane on this route isn't the pax, but the cargo that can be transported on the cargo holds. That0s why they don't change the model even with these numbers.

Te sorprenderá que seguramente no hubo una gran pérdida para IBERIA en este vuelo. La razón de que IBERIA use estos aviones en uno de sus vuelos, todos los días desde hace años, es la enorme demanda de carga. Es decir, aunque no hubiese pasajeros en este vuelo, seguramente la bodegas iban llenas y la pérdida no fue tanta o, incluso, puede que este vuelo diese beneficios.
Imagínate el beneficio que daría este vuelo en la época en la que iba también lleno de pasajeros...

It’s such a shame British people can no longer visit Spain without a 14 day quarantine. I was due to fly on IB3166 on the A350 last week along with the Jet2 A330 and Iberia CRJ1000, but sadly I was unable to due to COVID😞
Hopefully we will be permitted to return soon. I have a trip to Málaga booked in December, but case numbers will need to reduce 80% before the UK government will let us travel again.

I've read this week that many countries were about to reduce quarantine times to 7 or 10 days. Some experts said that 5 could even be enough with a good test system... Let's see what happens, but I don't know how long the aviation industry will survive this situation...
I'm sorry to say this... but the cases won't reduce until we get to a vaccine. Cases are growing all around Europe again and another lockdown it's just not possible (and nobody wants it). Cases won't reduce, but governments seem to not understand this...
OnBoardHD That is the sad truth. We need to learn to live with the virus, because a vaccine will likely not be available for some time (if it is even ever available). The UK Government certainly doesn’t understand this as when any country passes 20 per 100K cases it is immediately put on the quarantine list. It is also ridiculous to say that you are in as much danger to go to a small Spanish island like La Gomera or El Hierro as you are going to Madrid or Barcelona, which is obviously higher risk. I’ve already had 57 flights cancelled/rearranged and I expect that number to keep on growing...

The Canary Islands are about to start testing every tourist that enters AND leaves the island, so that way, other governments would allow tourists to fly there again without any restrictions... let's see if these becomes real soon!
OnBoardHD That sounds like a good plan. Any idea if the Canary tests will be free, or if not how much they will cost? I personally can’t justify paying €50+ every time I travel for COVID tests.

Aviation is starting to come back now. 😍😍 In fact, on May 12, me and my family are flying with SAS from New York to visit our native country Kingdom of Sweden for 3 months. We’ll be flying on the A330-343.
Hopefully this will be the good one and we won't have a step back in 3-4 months,,, :)
Vaya! que vuelo más vació pero muy probablemente, necesitaban el avión en Madrid para hacer otro vuelo con muchos pasajeros y por eso no cancelaron el vuelo, eso he escuchado que a veces sucede y más con un avión para largas distancias como lo es el A330, igual excelente vuelo y que el personal de tripulación les diese un snack a pesar de la cancelación de este servicio, excelente sin lugar a dudas.
Estos vuelo se hacen siempre con A330/A350 por la alta demanda de carga entre ambas ciudades. Aunque no haya pasajeros, la carga que lleva este tipo de avión en las bodegas no la pueden llevar los Airbus pequeños.

13:03 hace tanto tiempo que no vuelo, años!!!! Ni me acuerdo como se siente una turbulencia, creo que seria como si un Cercanias pasara por un cambio de vias a alta velocidad.
Por cierto mi ultimo vuelo fue un Alicante-Barcelona, con... IBERIA!!! imaginate el tiempo, ahora ese vuelo se hace con Vueling y aun sin la Terminal 1 en servicio!!

This route is operated daily by an A330 or A350 (A340 when they weren't retired). The reason for that is the huge cargo demand on this route. Even without pax, this flight was probably profitable due to the cargo. Imagine how profitable it could be during the normal times with full cargo and full pax...

Efectivamente. Ese vuelo se opera a diario con A330 o A350. Da igual si hay restricciones de pasajeros o no. Ese vuelo se opera por la demanda de carga.

Me sorprende que el Aeropuerto Heathrow esté completamente vacío . Iberia es una aerolínea difícil de usar para los viajeros asiáticos. En mi país, KoreanAir y Asiana Airlines operan vuelos entre Seúl-España.
Son los efectos de cuarentenas obligatorias sin ningún tipo de opción de librarse de ella con un test con resultado negativo... No se cómo va a salir la industria de la aviación de esta...

Iberia offers pay-to-eat menu in their short and medium haul routes, not depending on the type of plane used.
Why did they use a330 since theres 9 passengers inside so they can use a319 instead
