    My head cannon of The Traveler (from the guides) is that he was training as a maester but was overcome by wanderlust after studying far off places and abandoned his training to travel. This is why he is so knowledgeable about the places he visits. He finances his travels by hiring himself out as a guide to wealthy merchants or lesser nobility who end up having to travel to unfamiliar cities for various personal reasons.

    It just occurred to me. The three leaders of Robert's Rebellion were descendents of the three invasions of Westeros. Ned represents the First Men. Jon Arryn represents the Andals. Robert Baratheon represents the Targaryean invasion.

      The Robert one is a bit of a stretch. Also there's the Rhoynish invasion of Westeros. So this doesn't really work

      @@jaimelannister1797 what is the stretch. Is it that Robert's grandmother was targaryen or that his ancestor Orys was a targaryen bastard?

      @@makuojinanwa yeah i agree bareathon's are just an off shoot of targaryens especially with orys and the fact that the targaryen would intermarry with them when the valeryons weren't available and/or targaryen brother and sisters weren't really wanted the whole incest thing. that's why i thought it was always ironic that robert hated and wanted to kill all targaryens when he basically owes that family everything for the baratheons even being around and at it's level in westeros

      @@jaimelannister1797 yeah I kinda agree with that but also I kinda see the Rhoynish as a more refugee crisis or an asylum situation so sticking with invasions only I think it works. The Robert one being Orys marrying the dondarion daughter is no different then the andels really

    Personally I like to think of the Andals as the Vikings of a world of ice and fire. Slowly assimilating into the society and becoming the ruling class similar to the Vikings who became the norman knights of Western Europe.

    I find it interesting how many people read something in one of the ASOIAF books and take it as "truth". It is clear that EVERY SINGLE PART of all of the books are written from a particular person's point of view. And we all know people can be mistaken or, in the case of something that is spoken, can lie.

    • @Tronic21

      or they take every word as a clue to someone's heritage or identity or family or their future. I mean i wonder that people have ever thought that would mean GRRM would have had to meant every little clue which people see 7-8 "clues" a page. I mean he does do that with forethought alot but no way as many times and as many things and story lines that people think every he has. and if i hear "foreshadowing" any more then needs to be i'm really doing the "hand on the face" emoji. "foresjadowing" is unfortunately used way too much and incorrectly so many times about GRRM's writing and ASOIAF

      @@MyBoomStick1 I recommend you start with Mistborn. It's first novel is almost a standalone so you can see if you like it and if you get hooked the rest of the series is so damn good. His other work is a little umm "more" so it's a good starting point to get acquainted with his worlds. People sometimes say not to but I greatly recommend reading Warbreaker and Elantris, two of his earlier and 'weaker' books but I loved them both and they helped my understanding of his universe.

    I think all of us accumulate *some* list of things we look back on later as decisions we made for the wrong reasons. If we honestly didn't realize at the time they were wrong, it's easy enough to forgive ourselves - all we can do as we go along is our best "in the moment." But if we did know, deep down, and just caved in to other motivations, those we tend to remember and carry with us. I think the best we can hope for is that our list of such items is "minor." I absolutely can see Hoster looking back on the decision re: Lysa as a big one.
    I feel like my list is fairly minor, but then again I've never been lord paramount of a domain either. The world tests people differently. I generally believe power corrupts, and I've just never had any significant amount of power. I've certainly never been in, say, Galadriel's position when Frodo offered her the Ring.

    I think you can connect to works more than once. I read LotR long ago, and connected to it in a young person's way. But I read it again not too long ago, as a 60 year old person, and it was an entirely different experience. I remember that first experience, but I don't think I can fully appreciate it the way I did then, since I'm just not the same person.
    I won't cop out, though - if you erased my memory of all of these books and told me I was only allowed to read one of them, it would have to be Lord of the Rings (and the Silmarillion, hopefully). ASoIaF is awesome, but I just can't quite put it on the same tier as Tolkien.

  • @KipIngram
    @KipIngram 9 місяців тому

    39:00 - And besides, those Andals that were pushed out of their own homes, what were they supposed to do? In the end you really can't blame people for seeking to survive. It's really no different from a fox taking a farmer's chickens. It's survival. I think attempts to lay down some inviolable set of rules that can apply to every single situation is doomed to failure.

    At a certain point, I become irritated with the lemon tree deniers based on their lack of climate knowledge. You can't compare Braavos to Winterfell and say, "They had greenhouses and hot springs, but still no lemons!" It is the middle of a continent, and further north than Braavos, which is a coastal climate. Even if it's dreary, guess what? So is the Pacific Northwest, where people successfully grow citrus in sheltered gardens all the time. Learn to garden before you start theorizing about gardening!
