- Carl Threatens Negan And The Saviors
After seeing first hand of what Negan and the Saviors are capable of, Carl makes a stand against Negan and the Saviors. However, his courageousness was admirable to me and probably most fans out there. We see that Carl cost the group their firearms as a result of lashing out against Negan.

I like how Negan looks more impressed than angered when Carl's threatening him.

Interesting fact on why Negan is impressed with Carl
Rick was not a man to be messed with prior to Negan arriving, Rick came back from assumed dead to being a community leader (he wasn't given the role, he didn't ask for it, he took it), Rick focused on his own people and would take down anyone that threatened them, Rick didn't make a threat to people he didn't follow up with
That's what Carl learned from his dad, to stand strong and be assertive, and not let anyone destroy what his community built, if you remember Rick demanded a cut from Alexandria for helping them deal with Negan, but after Rick encountered Negan himself he met someone who reflected his own way of life, Negan tested Rick, and sadly Rick cowered, this disappointed Negan as he told Rick to his face, if Rick had been the man he used to be, Negan wouldn't have fucked with him
So Carl in this scene and others when Carl stood strong and determined, Negan was impressed because he did what Rick failed to do
@@Bustuhh Exactly, Rick never stopped being a survivor and he knew how to deal with the outside world, but what made him lose to Negan when he first appeared was some this factors.
Rick is even more ruthless than Carl, but Negan knew that and Negan knew that self awareness needed to be broken. Again Rick had all the resources to break down against Negan if he want the second he came to Alexandria for the first time. What Negan knew in the first place is that Rick became a confident selfish guy instead of continuing to be a cornered tiger he was after the Prison was messed up. If Rick never made to Alexandria and had to face Negan, he would be dead in a minute because again Negan's group is large than Governor's but what was governor's mistake was that he triggered a cornered tiger and let him had the upper hand while Negan knew he had to cornered that RV and mentally destroy their leader before they attack again.
And to be honest, Rick despite showing emotions like he is scared and afraid because he knew the other side has the size of 4 to 10 times bigger than his crew, his crew had always something that gave him the upperhand and that was battle experience.
Rick is being used to Battle more than any of o the groups he found, I think even the saviors, because he managed to kill a lot of them before Negan broke him. Again Negan knew the right call to win Rick, that was broking his soul and will to fight back.
His son however it is ruthless but harmless, because again Negan knows how Carl is just a kid who has balls but not a threat. Because he ain't a leader and doesn't have enough power to face Negan's group on his own. That's why

Negan respects Carl. I thought Chandler Riggs did a fine job this episode of playing a kid who knows he has to suck it up but can't control those teenage hormones at the same time.

I think Negan saw a potential heir/successor in Carl. Shame he died over some petty shit behind the scenes. A Carl villain turn down the line would have been great.
I think if Carl had lived that he and Negan would have become closer after Rick was gone there was a definite unspoken respect between them.
Negan respected Carl, because he learned from Rick (early years Rick) how to be a leader and make hard decisions
Rick created an image of fear, if someone threatened his community Rick would kill them, Rick killed other group leaders prior to this and that reinforced the image Rick created which Carl learned from
So when Rick met Negan the alphas clashed but Negans dominance destroyed the image Rick made, and Negan was disappointed by this
Negan then told Rick in private "if I had met that Rick, I wouldn't have fucked with him!" There was a picture of Rick when he was dominant
Rick destroyed his own image while Carl kept standing strong, which is why Negan was impressed with him instead of Rick
If they didn't fire Riggs then Lincoln might have stayed. He was not happy about how they did Riggs .

I also feel like if Carl hadn't died he would've been that bridge for the other characters to incorporate/accept Negan into the community, at least just on the basic level. I am not saying that everyone or anyone would have forgiven him, nor even Carl for that matter, and I'm also not saying that any of our main cast should "finally" forgive Negan when the franchise reaches its end. But, because Carl - who was just a kid when the apocalypse happened and seemed so much more worn out by all of the fighting and turf wars going on than those far older than him - I feel as though he had sensed that so much more earlier than everyone else within Negan and so kept on saying that none of them have to fight anymore.

Carl learned from Rick how to stand strong and be a leader, even when Rick himself forgot why he was feared
Negan privately told Rick that if he had met the Rick of old, he wouldn't have fucked with him, Carl stood as a man in front of Negan (privately and in public) and threatened him, that impressed Negan and was told to never change the image Carl created for himself when faced with Negan
Negan in this scene and others when there's witnesses, won't let anyone get away with threatening him, a punishment will be made, but it's all part of not letting someone destroy the idea of fear, so when Negan was alone with Carl he didn't care about the threats he made, but if it was done around witnesses Negan would punish them

I think it's more than Negan knows that the only reason Rick can be controlled is that he fears for Carl's safety. We all saw what happened once Carl was gone. Rick went full DGAF and became the most dangerous version of himself.
If you replaced Carl in this scene with John Wick, all of them would be dead before a dialogue even happened.

I always loved how Negan low key loved Carl, he genuinely was hurt and empathetic towards Rick when he died.
The little grimace that Negan gives as he says, "Do you want me to prove how serious? Again?" I love that so much for some reason.

Scenes like these really showed how unfortunately not great of an actor Chandler was.
