if you want to train your dog to stick to you while chaos going around you like bicycles, runners, cars and etc passing by, you really need to teach your dog to prefer being next to you instead of chasing them. In order to do that, you have to teach your puppy to stay next to you and neglect all the things happening around him in his or her earlier ages. Like, take your dog to walk around the place you live but don't let him to get distracted. Every time he looks away or tries to chase something pull him towards yourself and tell him to stay close if he follows your commands then give a tasty treat. I trained my dog by asking my nephews to run around him and make noise. I started pulling him at first but after a while understand that sticking with you is advantageous. So, make sure you show him or her that he has to stay with you unless you let him go freely, and meanwhile give the puppy good appreciation.

P.S. I just can’t stress how important it is to teach your dog the yes and no command! I daily trained my dog so he can understand what is yes and what is no. Every time i feed my boy i tell him to wait and then once he moves towards it i say no and take back the food.. eventually, he understands it and waits until I fill the bowl and tell him yes to let him know that it is okay to eat now. Same goes with his toys. I toss the toy and tell him to wait and no, he waits and expects me to give him the yes command to go for it. This will help him to understand in the future to stop chasing someone or something if you tell him or her no. Thanks

My pittbull was abused and neglected as a puppy by her original owners and shes fine at dog parks but on leash she goes crazy alot of the time. Any tips to get her to be less protective or chill out more?

Finally! Someone who doesn't train with E-collars! :) We moved to Europe from CA and e-collars are banned here. So every time I would look up US Doberman training videos, they'd use an E-collar. Nothing against people who use it but I wanted to make sure that I train and build my relationship with my dogs to where I didn't need one. Plus dobes are so sensitive, it's better to have discipline but motivate with postive methods. Anyway, just wanted to say love all the fun videos and your Doberman Planet website has really helped me in all things dobe.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  4 роки тому

Thank you CTran... so glad you enjoyed it. I won't say I "never" will recommend an e-collar... but really I feel all other possible avenues should be explored first. Usually when someone feels an e-collar is the only method left to try, they've been lacking somewhere else in training and we can just fix that instead!

Nice video. Been watching you for some time now. I have a 7 year old dobe named Magellan. He's my pic. His grandfather won the Westminster 2007 best of breed. One thing that I don't hear much about and that you might be aware of is that some dobes run into foreign object ingestion. Unfortunately this can be fatal and repetitive if they are lucky to survive. Magellan has had multiple surgeries due to this. Also I highly recommend that dobe owners get pet insurance. Feel free to reach out and keep the videos coming. All the best!

Oh man! So many great questions/answers! Guinness and Arlo have some things in common. Guinness loves his Jolly Ball too (and his Kong Wubba). Guinness and I are avid runners and use the Sport Dog brand e-collar when out for a run, and have for practically all of his 8 years. It has a beep, vibrate, and a shock. And I have only ONCE in 8 years used the shock (long story short, he distractedly ran into a busy intersection). I get a lot of comments about how good he is off leash, but I don't think most people realize it is NOT A FIX, not for pulling and certainly not for ignoring you when you call and that it took A TON of work and patience to get to the point where I feel 100% comfortable taking him down our People Trail, which can be pretty busy, off leash. It is a safety net, for Guinness and for the other people utilizing the trail. Before I ever put the wireless collar on, Guinness was a gentleman on leash. He does not pull. When I stop, he stops. When I say 'come' he comes, 'here' and he heels. I agree, your pooch should be dialed in before taking him in public off leash. I very, very seldom even have to use the even the 'beep' on the wireless collar. Even when he sees something small and fluffy that he REALLY wants to chase, a firm 'leave it' will have him refocusing back on our run.
Even though I use the wireless collar, I also don't recommend it. At least not for just anyone. And, I as said, I don't believe it should be used as a fix. If your Dobe isn't coming when called, there are other things that need to be worked on. A trigger happy beeper finger can quite literally ruin a dog just as easily as protect him.

E-collars don't really shock from what I've seen. That_Enzo_And_Lotus guy said, "It's more like when you go to the chiropractor." I would use it because even though the dog is fully trained the dog will always have a trigger and if something hits that trigger and they run off and don't come when called you can quickly press the button for the collar. It doesn't shock. Awesome video can't wait for more.

Thank you so much for your dedication to the Doberman breed, I've always wanted a Doberman since I was a kid. My wife and I have always owned Dachshunds and we finally decided to get a Doberman, I started researching the breed and your videos were so helpful. We watched them to make sure the breed was right for us, and so in February we adopted our Bree from a rescue in Dallas your videos have been indispensable for training. We have a well behaved and wonderful Doberman that gets along with her Dachshund brother and sister. Again thank you so much for everything you do for this wonderful breed.

It helped us so much and they are really amazing dogs! With our pup Bruce there's this brand of treats that really gets him interested and he'll do anything for those treats specially. The brand's name is "Full Moon" and we've tried the chicken nuggets and the chicken jerky. We break them down to little pieces and they work wonders in teaching Bruce new tricks.

Ask questions about their breeding and be interested in them. They have such a high demand for their pups right now you really have to play a bit of a social game and get them to like you to get in with them. So sorry to hear that. Yes, a lot of people believe that because of how they're portrayed in movies and television. And to be fair, there were many "junk yard" type owners in the 70's who used owned these dogs. But things have certainly changed and the Doberman truly is one of the most loyal, dedicated, and loving dogs around. Good luck convincing your Aunt! Send her to some of my videos to see Arlo!

I like the pupperoni treats for training. They are like beef jerky sticks for dogs. Not greasy and I just cut them into smaller bite size pieces. And can cut them bigger as the dog grows if needed.

Practical and informative. Here's a tip: don't let the baby lick the electric sockets so that Arlo doesn't have to rescue you from bad parenting

Totally agree! Arlo has worked his way (finally) through the handle of our Jolly Ball. But it sure took him a VERY long time so I'm still very happy with it. He loves it.

Could you do a video about adopting a doberman from a rescue? I have never gotten a dog from a breeder but I would love to have a doberman because they are amazing dogs! I'm curious about pros, cons, training, adopting an older dog, etc.

We adopted our Doberman from a rescue in Dallas, no regrets if you do decide to adopt one just carefully read the dog's bio make sure it's a good fit for your home. Especially if you have other dogs, cats, or children, our Doberman was a perfect match and we haven't had any problems thanks to these videos, good luck!

I have 2 blue dobies. 1 (1yr 7mo) male who is blue on blue, he dont have the rust markings n 1 (2yr 8mo) female who is blue n rust. Im so glad I found ur channel. Iv learn quiet a bit watching. I find that my male sticks 2 me more than my female. So much so that he tends 2 get jealous. He also hates 4 any of the other dogs 2 sit n my lap 🙄 My female tends 2 stick 2 both my husband n I. Neither have their ears cropped. My husband says he wished he'd had them done. Of course its 2 late now. The 2 r so very different yet alot alike. I dont have a specific breed I lean toward more. Im an all kind of dogs person 😊 Along with the 2 dobies I have a boxer, beagle, pomeranian, n fiest/beagle. mix. Keep doing the Q&A videos, they r quiet helpful. Thanks 4 helping us along the way. B safe.

Thank you so much for your education about Doberman. I came out of cancer fighting and I am in remission and I want to get a Doberman dog. But I live in France and do not know where to get a family Doberman dog breeder. Can you help me John?

Best treat I've used is stew meat/flank steak bought on sale . I trim excess fat and then dehydrate making little fresh jerky treats. My dobie (that we sadly lost to heart failure) , our rescue mutt, and our rescue pit LOVE them. Only use as a special treat for training.

John, LOVE the channel so much; can't wait to move out of my apt and into a house, so a Dobe can come into my life.
In regards to Dawn Gilman's question re: e-collar training and your response. I would like to refer you both (and other viewers) to Thomas Davis' FB channel (Upstate Canine Academy); I find it very educational, training-wise. A very recent video, "How I Safely Train my Dogs Completely Off-leash," pretty well covers this topic. Another training collar Tom incorporates is the Herm Sprenger Prong collar. He emphasis the importance of using ANY training aide correctly. I hope this referral is helpful.
