Over the past (almost) 40 years my wife and I have owned seven Dobermans for life. No other dog will do. We are waiting for a puppy to have his ears cropped before starting the journey with our eighth Doberman. I’ve been training my 8 month old dobie 2 times a day for about 4 months while we go on walks and I put him in the crate right after and he knocks out. He would cry at first but after about week he would run in and lay down himself !!! I highly recommended putting your dog in your crate after a training session or a workout it really helps. I’ve started leaving his cage open and he comes out when he wakes up and lays down on my bed till I get back. I swear this breed can catch on to stuff faster than some people
Thank you for putting this video together. I have a 3 year old female Doberman now named Sasha. I was there when she was born because my folks have the breeding pair. She basically stayed with them for almost the first 3 years of her life while I stayed there too, but I was working most of the day, and would spend time with her when I could. I finally got my place fixed up, and moved into it last year. After a couple weeks there, I brought Sasha home and spent a good bit of time with her to help try and ease the stress of being away from her family, and just with me alone. I stay at home all the time now for medical reasons, but I do need to leave the house from time to time. She seemed okay enough when I would be in another room, or not in her immediate eye sight, before, so I assumed she would be okay while I went to the store. I was dead wrong as she tore a huge hole in my wall, and almost made her way outside through that hole. Now, I can't be in another room without her being directly under me. Watching this video helped me to see some of the anxiety cues. I have a kennel for her that I got after she ate my wall. She was fine going into it at first because I didn't show it as a punishment for her. But, I wrongfully messed up because each time I needed to go anywhere, I would put her into the kennel, and immediately leave for where I was going. I could hear her whining before I even got to the door. Now, she won't even go near the kennel anymore. I have been working with her on that too by leaving a treat in the far back corner. She has to get all the way into the kennel now to get it, but I'm hoping that it'll eventually relieve any stress that she's associated with being in the kennel. I did the car keys trigger check too while watching your video, good call on that because she jumped up right away. I'm going to be working with that now too. Thank you for posting this video. I have my work cut out for me with Sasha, but thanks to your videos, I at least have some better understanding of how to proceed. Doberman's are a special breed for sure!

Yeah my doberman has that to. When I have her outside with the other dogs and I'm inside, she cry's like a baby until I let her in. And she's two years old no less.
So i have just lost my husband of 34 yrs to cancer and i am looking to get a good strong dog to make me feel safe here out in the sticks. I first of all want to really thank you , my son suggested Doberman and i had been admiring the stamp of dog for a long time but have made bad experiences with Rottweilers and GSD (grew up in Germany myself and got chased by many a GSD as a child) but met a couple of absolutely stunning Dobermans one of which i was going to kidnapp and take home from my friends. So when my son recently said I almost got you a Doberman pup i started seriously contemplating it's his all time dream dog (he is 32) and now that i am alone i want a good reliable dog to make me feel a bit safer here. Watching your videos has given me the confidence to actually seriously start looking now. One question i have a beautiful very intelligent x bred dog and my old labrador girl, would it be too much for my older girl to put up with a strong pup like that, also my younger dog , he is 5 now, is mother pure bred Red Setter x father collie x saluki , he is amazingly smart and very obedient he has one mistake he tries to make my older dog play and chase him by barking in her face on our home walks (it's the boring one) not when we go to other places like the forest here, it's really annoying and i have tried so many approaches to get him out of this but the collie wanting to play is just too strong, he always manages to slip one in when i turn or don't expect it, as usually he only does it for the first 20 yards . HOw would a doberman react to this and also i have 2 horses over 30 chickens all running around, ducks and geese and 3 sheep.... what do you think? Apart from those circumstances i had dogs all my life , grew up with them , my grandparents bred the larger poodles and i had labradors that i bred, collies, x breeds and spaniels, so plently of dog life experiences.
by the way i know it's difficult for any dog to be around flappy birdies but i managed to get the hunting instinct out of both mine, the pure bred lab and the setter cross even though they are hunting breeds, and we lost a couple of chick babies ... cause well they aren't chickens really ..you see ;) so i am kinda hoping i could cope with a Dobe too.. i know you can't tell me that but maybe you can answer those few concerns .
My 1 year old dobie isn't a fan of his crate and would howl/ bark whenever he had to be crated (especially at night)! I started putting a lick mat and his fav blanket in the crate at night and poof the barking stopped!!! So far week 2 of no crying and lick mat is no longer needed 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Still not a fan of the crate (will drop to the floor in protest like a toddler when i give the inside command) but at least he's starting not realize his time in the crate is temporary🤷🏾♀️
This is all spot-on...I already learned and employed most of this and was very happy to find from surveillance video with progressively longer times alone, while free inside the house, that my new 1 ½ YO Doberman mix pretty much whined a bit and then jumped on the sofa and stayed there and never made another peep, and that's where I'd find him when I got back. I'm having to take the crate training much more slowly, though. He obviously doesn't feel like he's in captivity while alone in the house like he does in the crate. Maybe reminds him of being in the shelter.
This is just the video I was hoping for. I don't have my puppy yet but have been concerned that I actually am at home a lot and when I do have to leave that it could be an issue. This answers a lot of my questions. I also love your skits a lot. Very funny. Thanks.
Great videos and very practical tips. As a doberman owner I would love a video about house cleanliness tips trick to keep the house clean as much as possible from the shedding hair and how to prevent the house from the so called dog smell
Very simple vacuum your house from time to time keep your dog clean don't really have that problem with my dog and he's an inside dog I maybe give him a bath every 2 to 3 months in my opinion Dobermans do not shed much at all
I had to crate the dog before I left fearing the possible destruction. We found a cat/tiny kitten in the yard that was in bad shape. The vets saved her. She was very vibrant and loved the dog. Never had a problem again. Obviously I tested the dog/short errand, then longer absence. Dobie had a pal and no more anxiety when I left. Magic.
Luckily for me my puppy has cat siblings, so he doesn’t feel too alone haha he also gets visited by my parents a few times a day while I’m at work. Eventually I plan on getting another puppy so they can keep each other company.
Thanks John Nyx has our Lab with her when we leave, but she will pace and stand at the front door for about 15-20 mins, then will eventually jump on her couch and rest. Seeing that she's with us almost 24/7 in the truck, it was a little tougher for her. We can go out to dinner for 3 hours or so now without worrying. She absolutely loves Doggy Day camp at PetSmart though...she used to look back, and you could see what she was thinking in her eyes lol Now, just like our Lab, she just walks right into the back without a care in the world... picking her up is like party though 😂 Like you said never make a big fuss when you come home. Oh good! That's great news to be able to spend a chunk of time out for dinner without worrying about her. Having the Lab is also a big benefit - they pick up a lot from watching how the other dogs around them react!

I got frist Doberman back In Oct he is 17weeks old he definitely chews up thing if he left alone I been rasing him at home an over the road he rides in my 18wheeler he is a great dog I have to give him a chew toy when I to leave to go into truck stop

I love Dobies and Doxies. Both are velcro dogs. My Dobie would try to sneak onto my lap starting with putting one leg on my lap. If I let him, he would literally sit in my lap. Now I have two dachshunds that are velcro babies.

Its normal if my dobie shed alot? She is 10 month now and everytime she sleep in my bed i just notice my bed full of her hair .. since that i always brush her everyday, give suplement for her skin, coconut oil. Everything but still… everytime i clean my floor also lotoff her hair, in her bed alot also .. kinda worry i notice it when she is 8 month yo

Hi! Is it normal that my Dobermans ear have been cropped, posted, and healed yet they are only up when he’s alert? They’re often laid back (not flapping down) against his head rather than being up like they are when he’s alert.

Sammy has gotten into the habit of rolling my computer chair around the living room when I go outside without him. He'll watch me from the window and can see I'm near the car, or talking to a neighbor. I'll come back inside and my chair is either tipped over, or on the other side of the room. Have you tried the "Masked intruder" scenario on Arlo? I remember Cooper didn't give much of a reaction. Maybe Arlo will tackle you. 🙂
Haha, no, haven't tried that with Arlo yet. Maybe someday! It would be interesting to see! Sammy sounds like he likes to get into mischief when you're gone, but just a little. They're such smart dogs!
Do you have any suggestions with crating during the day? We play, feed and potty our 6 month old doberman before we crate him in the morning during work usually 8-12. However, he starts to bark around 11 and when we let him out he runs to get water immediately. Then play with him or entertain him for 15-30 mins then he will go sleep on the couch or relax till around 4. Biggest question is on what to do for him to stay calm till we let him out around 12. Also, on the weekends he struggles in the crate since it's not the same routine as the week days. We go out for a few hours in the evening and he will start to bark and go crazy after an hour.
Check out Joel Beckman's satiation videos. Susan Garrett's crate games too. Any way you can take the pup with you for a ride? Just getting out of the house for a car ride can help. Sara Ondrako has a great video on making a snuffle mat which stimulates them mentally and helps tamp down their energy level. Have to be present when they're using it if they destroy things though. Susan Garrett also has a video of 20 different games to play when it's too cold or hot to get them out for exercise. Any possible puppy play dates? That wears a dog out quicker than anything BUT you have to be careful and sure the other dog is a good role model and ok with pups.
Question. I get rewarding the dog when it's sitting quietly in the pen but what do you do with a pup in it's pen that won't stop whining? Is it just a matter of waiting until it settles done for a minute and quickly rewarding them?
How and why did they bite? Check out Joel Beckman's videos. Victoria Stillwell also has great videos of Dobes at home and resolving those issues. What part of the country are you located? I have two males and the younger one about 14 months old decided he would try to take over. My older one is a therapy dog and so laid back, but also wasn't going to let the pup take over. Had to hire a trainer that said to work with the pup almost exclusively as he is the less confident one. Also, keep a journal. It's very easy to forget when the last incident happened. If it's something new, check out Dr. Jean Dodds and get a full thyroid panel done. He may be going through a fear period too. Worst case scenario, please call your breeder and/or a rescue group for tips to try before deciding his fate.
I would get a professional to help you. Something is not right. Many people don’t handle standard dogs well. Dobermans need good consistent training. And, NEVER punishment.
So sorry to hear about this, Paul! Hiring a canine behaviorist would be the best route to go with this situation. A behaviorist could see your Doberman and his environment in-person, and observe the subtle signs he gives off during his interactions. Behavior modification is also something where typically the best approach is to test the dog in different ways, see how he reacts, observe his triggers, and then develop a plan. Hope this helps!

I’ll look into what you recommend, he bit me on head whilst I was looking at a rash on his chest he keeps scratching he gets nervous when you check him out, then he rose up and showed all teeth till I grabbed him and put him outside, he scraped my head I feel it was a warning otherwise I’d probably been in hospital, with my 5 year old girl she went to hug him whilst he was behind me cooking and he growled and striped her down face like my scratching her eyelid, very lucky. Don’t want next time to be a big regret obviously.
@@DobermanPlanet thanks for your response mate I might try that we do train him a fair bit, my trainer edges towards protection dogs so maybe I’m putting wrong signals in, I explain what happened above to robin, I love the dog as he’s so good normally just these flashpoint issues I can’t watch all the time and when people come round he will have to be muzzled from now on. Food is an issue and trying to groom him if I look like I’m peering at him 🤷♂️
What about the dobermans that cry if you leave the room instead if leaving the house. When we leave house she’s fine (we have cameras showing she is fine). If we shut her out of a room we are in GAME OVER.
Our doberman runs 3+ miles a day on bike rides… we give her bones, shes fed, we train her everyday for stimulation. But we cannot leave her side without her crying if we are in the house.
Does she have a "bed" / "place" command? I would start with this and for really short periods and slowly move further away from where you are ( only changing 1 variable at a time ie distance or duration) eventually in a different room, all with nice Chewie things available on the bed. When she will stay in another room on her bed then slowly work on how far open the door to the room where you are is. Other people may have quicker or better solutions?

Soon as we move around or leave to another room she has to follow immediately. Mine is identical, Jessika. Dobermans are "velcro" dogs, and want to remain by your side as much as possible. Protection breeds can't properly defend their family separated across the house

My red Doberman has been chewing a spot on her leg, sometimes even when I’m home. I’ve tried everything to get her to stop. She will be 8 years old in May. Do you have advice? She has free reign of the house and I walk her at least four or five times and feed her plenty. I forgot to mention that she never barks.

They’re rarely alone because they’re both emotional support animals! I would love to breed my Doberman but is she to old? And if I wanted to breed my dashshund with her being older would it be ok! I need to ask. Is it ever possible to just have a dobermann as a normal dog that i can just leave home, shut the door and come back after work? From these videos i conclude that once i get a Dobbie my life changes completely and whole life schedule, priorities and way of doing things shifts 180 degrees and nothing can be just normal. (I'd like to warmheartedly ask people who think that dogs are children in families or that dogs are on par with children to stay away from commenting)
Great on everything but I wish you had mentioned that after they eat they need to digest their food for a hour so they don't get bloat . Before a person plays with them .
Not thinking you want your dog to be aggressive, but that you want her to be protective. Look into local IGP/IPO/Schutzhund Training. This is protection dog training that will equip your Doberman to know how to react well if a difficult circumstance arises.
My Doberman is only aggressive when he needs to be. These dogs are very smart and know when there is a real threat. Do not worry your dog was bred to be a guard dog it is in his nature even if you don’t see it often it is there. I saw it in my dog when another big loose dog approached us aggressively. It was like he turned into a beast. I didn’t know he could be that aggressive and he scared the other dog away. Then when it was over he switched back to his friendly self.

My 17 week old girl barks and howls whilst I'm out and I hate she gets so worked up but I have to leave her for 2 school runs a day each being about 15 minutes. I leave her a stuffed Kong each time and she's crated though I admit in the day she hates her crate will not stay in it at all, only accepts it at night time. I'm at a loss as I'm having to leave her upset 10x a week. If I don't leave a Kong I can't leave the house before she gets worked up. Not sure how I'm meant to train her when I'm constantly having to leave her over her threshold 🥺
Hello john, what are your thoughts on weighted vests? I’m looking into getting one for our Doberman, but I’m not sure if it’s a necessity. He’s very rambunctious and full of energy and 2 one hour walks don’t seem to tire him out even the slightest. I know the vest could benefit him physically and energy wise, but I’m not sure if I should be putting too much stress on his muscles and joints :/ Great video!
@@jessikadayle4878 I wonder if mine is doing that a bit too. She was so good for years, didn't have to crate her and she wouldn't get into anything. But this summer I walked down to the mailbox (30 min) and came back, she had a nickel sized wound. Since then it's everytime I leave now it's open and bigger. I wonder if it's because I took the other dog and not her... I can't walk her and she can't get much exercise in the yard in the winter because I live in a very cold climate. Her chewing is worse in winter. So I'm thinking it has a lot to do with exercise. So I'm definitely gonna try playing with her before I go, making sure I feed her before and try the music thing since I almost always have music or tv on when I'm home, that'll probably help her a lot. @@E.C.Animation yes ours gets jealous if we have the other dog…. It does help if we exercise her before leaving OR spend 20 min going over tricks and training to stimulate her. Ours is 10 months old and just started this chewing thing.
Love your videos. We just got a Doberman puppy (half Euro, half American). We are starting him off in the house like you have done on your videos. But the thing is, we got him so he will eventually be a guard dog for our property. How do we transition him later on from primarily inside dog to a primarily outside guard dog? Thanks.
Thank God I have a normal non-stop always good Doberman Pinscher... nothing has been bad so far... she is not and has not ever been a problem. I have never one time in all my years used a crate... I think that dogs have lived without them for eons and it is unnecessary. If you have to keep a dog in a pen or crate all day... then you DO NOT need a dog right now, because one of you is making the other miserable...
You really found a gem, Zeke! But totally agree with you that a dog shouldn't be kept in a crate all day. Dobermans need tons of exercise, love, mental stimulization, and socialization to be well-rounded. Sounds like you've done a great job and are enjoying the fruits of your labor!
I got to figure something out my wife and neighbors are fed up with my lil buddy Zeus. He is always tearing stuff up. He is always pacing and in the way in the house when we walk. Digging massive holes in back yard. Always making noise and sneezing in your face and the thing that drives my wife crazy is his pushyness and won't give her space. Please help before I have to choose my wife or my dog!!!
Sounds like a management issue. How old is the Dobe? Check out Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In. They are a working breed and also known as Velcro dogs. Check out Joel Beckman's videos and Susan Garrett's 20 games video especially when it's too cold out to exercise them. Sara Ondrako has an awesome video on making a snuffle mat which helps wear them out and stimulates them mentally. My younger Dobe won't even eat his lunch out of the dish, has to be his snuffle mat. Victoria Stilwell has some awesome videos right in the homes of Dobes too. Hope this helps. You sound like a comedian, hope your wife appreciates you. Lol.
Wow! These are a lot of behavioral issues. No doubt you will have to work on them immediately and one by one. Probably not insurmountable, but, you will ha e to be focused and steadfast in training your dog. I would probably consult a professional to help you. Dobermans need consistency and positive training. You cannot be a lazy owner with a Doberman.

I try by letting him outside as much as possible correcting him when he does wrong and he knows when he does won't cuz he cowers towards the ground. He won't give my wife ANY space he is 1 year old and 4 days. He had so many toys and has a companion our three year old lab Dane mix ally

@@SwaggFamilyAdventures so for the digging, you can give him a place in the back yard that's the dog's pile. Bury bones in that area, put it on command. My neighbor taught her dog to dig on command and now he digs the holes for flowers or her garden so she doesn't have to. For destroying stuff that isn't his, John mentions that in his video. After they loose their puppy teeth, they go through a second phase where they're setting their jaw pressure. My older Dobe was in a crate til about 1.5 yrs not because of a house training issue, just a destruction issue. Just like in John's video, start with the next room, then 10 minutes out talking to the neighbor and you want to vary the times not always increasing the time (sometimes you go back to 5 minutes). Joel Beckman 's satiation video - stuffed Kongs, marrow bones, bully sticks. Go back to where they were last successful as far as the description. Might be progressing too fast or have too much space too soon if the destruction continues. Keep a journal so you can track when the last time the destruction happened and try to figure out why - too long of a time, too much other temptation, etc.
I was a little disturbed by some of the comments left on this video. There are some people really struggling with their Dobes and sound like they are not doing well. I sure hope they take John’s advise from many of these videos or lean on a professional near them. You never want to have a bad Doberman. Let me add that I am a firm believer that it is nearly always the owners fault. These are awesome dogs that require a mature, steadfast, energetic owner. Please do not get one unless you are committed to the proper care, training and socialization required for this breed. If it makes me a bad person for saying this, then so be it. I adore this breed and wish for people to understand the responsibility involved. I am wishing the best to those who are struggling.

No one can be with their Doberman 24/7, as much as we would like to be. But you are right, they are people dogs and love spending time with their owners. With many people working at home recently, simple tasks like leaving for a doctor's visit or grocery shopping could cause a problem for ones that have separation anxiety. Hopefully this video helps!
Exactly owning a doberman or any big active dog is a longtime commitment if you don't have the time to exercise him and spend time with your dog don't get one.

Over the past (almost) 40 years my wife and I have owned seven Dobermans for life. No other dog will do. We are waiting for a puppy to have his ears cropped before starting the journey with our eighth Doberman. I’ve been training my 8 month old dobie 2 times a day for about 4 months while we go on walks and I put him in the crate right after and he knocks out. He would cry at first but after about week he would run in and lay down himself !!! I highly recommended putting your dog in your crate after a training session or a workout it really helps. I’ve started leaving his cage open and he comes out when he wakes up and lays down on my bed till I get back. I swear this breed can catch on to stuff faster than some people
Thank you for putting this video together. I have a 3 year old female Doberman now named Sasha. I was there when she was born because my folks have the breeding pair. She basically stayed with them for almost the first 3 years of her life while I stayed there too, but I was working most of the day, and would spend time with her when I could. I finally got my place fixed up, and moved into it last year. After a couple weeks there, I brought Sasha home and spent a good bit of time with her to help try and ease the stress of being away from her family, and just with me alone. I stay at home all the time now for medical reasons, but I do need to leave the house from time to time. She seemed okay enough when I would be in another room, or not in her immediate eye sight, before, so I assumed she would be okay while I went to the store. I was dead wrong as she tore a huge hole in my wall, and almost made her way outside through that hole. Now, I can't be in another room without her being directly under me. Watching this video helped me to see some of the anxiety cues. I have a kennel for her that I got after she ate my wall. She was fine going into it at first because I didn't show it as a punishment for her. But, I wrongfully messed up because each time I needed to go anywhere, I would put her into the kennel, and immediately leave for where I was going. I could hear her whining before I even got to the door. Now, she won't even go near the kennel anymore. I have been working with her on that too by leaving a treat in the far back corner. She has to get all the way into the kennel now to get it, but I'm hoping that it'll eventually relieve any stress that she's associated with being in the kennel. I did the car keys trigger check too while watching your video, good call on that because she jumped up right away. I'm going to be working with that now too. Thank you for posting this video. I have my work cut out for me with Sasha, but thanks to your videos, I at least have some better understanding of how to proceed. Doberman's are a special breed for sure!

Yeah my doberman has that to. When I have her outside with the other dogs and I'm inside, she cry's like a baby until I let her in. And she's two years old no less.
So i have just lost my husband of 34 yrs to cancer and i am looking to get a good strong dog to make me feel safe here out in the sticks. I first of all want to really thank you , my son suggested Doberman and i had been admiring the stamp of dog for a long time but have made bad experiences with Rottweilers and GSD (grew up in Germany myself and got chased by many a GSD as a child) but met a couple of absolutely stunning Dobermans one of which i was going to kidnapp and take home from my friends. So when my son recently said I almost got you a Doberman pup i started seriously contemplating it's his all time dream dog (he is 32) and now that i am alone i want a good reliable dog to make me feel a bit safer here. Watching your videos has given me the confidence to actually seriously start looking now. One question i have a beautiful very intelligent x bred dog and my old labrador girl, would it be too much for my older girl to put up with a strong pup like that, also my younger dog , he is 5 now, is mother pure bred Red Setter x father collie x saluki , he is amazingly smart and very obedient he has one mistake he tries to make my older dog play and chase him by barking in her face on our home walks (it's the boring one) not when we go to other places like the forest here, it's really annoying and i have tried so many approaches to get him out of this but the collie wanting to play is just too strong, he always manages to slip one in when i turn or don't expect it, as usually he only does it for the first 20 yards . HOw would a doberman react to this and also i have 2 horses over 30 chickens all running around, ducks and geese and 3 sheep.... what do you think? Apart from those circumstances i had dogs all my life , grew up with them , my grandparents bred the larger poodles and i had labradors that i bred, collies, x breeds and spaniels, so plently of dog life experiences.
by the way i know it's difficult for any dog to be around flappy birdies but i managed to get the hunting instinct out of both mine, the pure bred lab and the setter cross even though they are hunting breeds, and we lost a couple of chick babies ... cause well they aren't chickens really ..you see ;) so i am kinda hoping i could cope with a Dobe too.. i know you can't tell me that but maybe you can answer those few concerns .
My 1 year old dobie isn't a fan of his crate and would howl/ bark whenever he had to be crated (especially at night)! I started putting a lick mat and his fav blanket in the crate at night and poof the barking stopped!!! So far week 2 of no crying and lick mat is no longer needed 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Still not a fan of the crate (will drop to the floor in protest like a toddler when i give the inside command) but at least he's starting not realize his time in the crate is temporary🤷🏾♀️
This is all spot-on...I already learned and employed most of this and was very happy to find from surveillance video with progressively longer times alone, while free inside the house, that my new 1 ½ YO Doberman mix pretty much whined a bit and then jumped on the sofa and stayed there and never made another peep, and that's where I'd find him when I got back. I'm having to take the crate training much more slowly, though. He obviously doesn't feel like he's in captivity while alone in the house like he does in the crate. Maybe reminds him of being in the shelter.

Great videos and very practical tips. As a doberman owner I would love a video about house cleanliness tips trick to keep the house clean as much as possible from the shedding hair and how to prevent the house from the so called dog smell
Very simple vacuum your house from time to time keep your dog clean don't really have that problem with my dog and he's an inside dog I maybe give him a bath every 2 to 3 months in my opinion Dobermans do not shed much at all

I had to crate the dog before I left fearing the possible destruction. We found a cat/tiny kitten in the
yard that was in bad shape. The vets saved her. She was very vibrant and loved the dog. Never had a problem again. Obviously I tested the dog/short errand, then longer absence. Dobie had a pal and no more anxiety when I left. Magic.

Luckily for me my puppy has cat siblings, so he doesn’t feel too alone haha he also gets visited by my parents a few times a day while I’m at work. Eventually I plan on getting another puppy so they can keep each other company.

Nyx has our Lab with her when we leave, but she will pace and stand at the front door for about 15-20 mins, then will eventually jump on her couch and rest. Seeing that she's with us almost 24/7 in the truck, it was a little tougher for her.
We can go out to dinner for 3 hours or so now without worrying.
She absolutely loves Doggy Day camp at PetSmart though...she used to look back, and you could see what she was thinking in her eyes lol
Now, just like our Lab, she just walks right into the back without a care in the world... picking her up is like party though 😂

Oh good! That's great news to be able to spend a chunk of time out for dinner without worrying about her. Having the Lab is also a big benefit - they pick up a lot from watching how the other dogs around them react!

I got frist Doberman back In Oct he is 17weeks old he definitely chews up thing if he left alone I been rasing him at home an over the road he rides in my 18wheeler he is a great dog I have to give him a chew toy when I to leave to go into truck stop

I love Dobies and Doxies. Both are velcro dogs. My Dobie would try to sneak onto my lap starting with putting one leg on my lap. If I let him, he would literally sit in my lap. Now I have two dachshunds that are velcro babies.

Sammy has gotten into the habit of rolling my computer chair around the living room when I go outside without him. He'll watch me from the window and can see I'm near the car, or talking to a neighbor. I'll come back inside and my chair is either tipped over, or on the other side of the room. Have you tried the "Masked intruder" scenario on Arlo? I remember Cooper didn't give much of a reaction. Maybe Arlo will tackle you. 🙂
Haha, no, haven't tried that with Arlo yet. Maybe someday! It would be interesting to see! Sammy sounds like he likes to get into mischief when you're gone, but just a little. They're such smart dogs!
Do you have any suggestions with crating during the day? We play, feed and potty our 6 month old doberman before we crate him in the morning during work usually 8-12. However, he starts to bark around 11 and when we let him out he runs to get water immediately. Then play with him or entertain him for 15-30 mins then he will go sleep on the couch or relax till around 4. Biggest question is on what to do for him to stay calm till we let him out around 12. Also, on the weekends he struggles in the crate since it's not the same routine as the week days. We go out for a few hours in the evening and he will start to bark and go crazy after an hour.
Check out Joel Beckman's satiation videos. Susan Garrett's crate games too. Any way you can take the pup with you for a ride? Just getting out of the house for a car ride can help. Sara Ondrako has a great video on making a snuffle mat which stimulates them mentally and helps tamp down their energy level. Have to be present when they're using it if they destroy things though. Susan Garrett also has a video of 20 different games to play when it's too cold or hot to get them out for exercise. Any possible puppy play dates? That wears a dog out quicker than anything BUT you have to be careful and sure the other dog is a good role model and ok with pups.
Question. I get rewarding the dog when it's sitting quietly in the pen but what do you do with a pup in it's pen that won't stop whining? Is it just a matter of waiting until it settles done for a minute and quickly rewarding them?

How and why did they bite? Check out Joel Beckman's videos. Victoria Stillwell also has great videos of Dobes at home and resolving those issues. What part of the country are you located? I have two males and the younger one about 14 months old decided he would try to take over. My older one is a therapy dog and so laid back, but also wasn't going to let the pup take over. Had to hire a trainer that said to work with the pup almost exclusively as he is the less confident one. Also, keep a journal. It's very easy to forget when the last incident happened. If it's something new, check out Dr. Jean Dodds and get a full thyroid panel done. He may be going through a fear period too. Worst case scenario, please call your breeder and/or a rescue group for tips to try before deciding his fate.
I would get a professional to help you. Something is not right. Many people don’t handle standard dogs well. Dobermans need good consistent training. And, NEVER punishment.
So sorry to hear about this, Paul! Hiring a canine behaviorist would be the best route to go with this situation. A behaviorist could see your Doberman and his environment in-person, and observe the subtle signs he gives off during his interactions. Behavior modification is also something where typically the best approach is to test the dog in different ways, see how he reacts, observe his triggers, and then develop a plan. Hope this helps!

I’ll look into what you recommend, he bit me on head whilst I was looking at a rash on his chest he keeps scratching he gets nervous when you check him out, then he rose up and showed all teeth till I grabbed him and put him outside, he scraped my head I feel it was a warning otherwise I’d probably been in hospital, with my 5 year old girl she went to hug him whilst he was behind me cooking and he growled and striped her down face like my scratching her eyelid, very lucky. Don’t want next time to be a big regret obviously.
@@DobermanPlanet thanks for your response mate I might try that we do train him a fair bit, my trainer edges towards protection dogs so maybe I’m putting wrong signals in, I explain what happened above to robin, I love the dog as he’s so good normally just these flashpoint issues I can’t watch all the time and when people come round he will have to be muzzled from now on. Food is an issue and trying to groom him if I look like I’m peering at him 🤷♂️
What about the dobermans that cry if you leave the room instead if leaving the house. When we leave house she’s fine (we have cameras showing she is fine). If we shut her out of a room we are in GAME OVER.
Our doberman runs 3+ miles a day on bike rides… we give her bones, shes fed, we train her everyday for stimulation. But we cannot leave her side without her crying if we are in the house.
Does she have a "bed" / "place" command? I would start with this and for really short periods and slowly move further away from where you are ( only changing 1 variable at a time ie distance or duration) eventually in a different room, all with nice Chewie things available on the bed. When she will stay in another room on her bed then slowly work on how far open the door to the room where you are is. Other people may have quicker or better solutions?

Soon as we move around or leave to another room she has to follow immediately. Mine is identical, Jessika. Dobermans are "velcro" dogs, and want to remain by your side as much as possible. Protection breeds can't properly defend their family separated across the house

I kept the dog off any furniture until potty trained. They are quick and your may not catch them in time when they decide to relieve themselves.

What would you recommend to help a Doberman not get separation anxiety when I work from home? I want to put him in his play pen to keep him confined so he doesn't roam the house but I don't want him thinking it's a jail all day!
My red Doberman has been chewing a spot on her leg, sometimes even when I’m home. I’ve tried everything to get her to stop. She will be 8 years old in May. Do you have advice? She has free reign of the house and I walk her at least four or five times and feed her plenty. I forgot to mention that she never barks.
It could be a food allergy or a hot spot. Definitely ask your vet about it to see if a change in diet is necessary!
@@DobermanPlanet 🙏 thank you! I recently took my 8 yr old red Doberman and my 12 yr old dashshund to the vet and they gave me hot spot meds. They’re rarely alone because they’re both emotional support animals! I would love to breed my Doberman but is she to old? And if I wanted to breed my dashshund with her being older would it be ok! From these videos i conclude that once i get a Dobbie my life changes completely and whole life schedule, priorities and way of doing things shifts 180 degrees and nothing can be just normal.

Not thinking you want your dog to be aggressive, but that you want her to be protective. Look into local IGP/IPO/Schutzhund Training. This is protection dog training that will equip your Doberman to know how to react well if a difficult circumstance arises.
My Doberman is only aggressive when he needs to be. These dogs are very smart and know when there is a real threat. Do not worry your dog was bred to be a guard dog it is in his nature even if you don’t see it often it is there. I saw it in my dog when another big loose dog approached us aggressively. It was like he turned into a beast. I didn’t know he could be that aggressive and he scared the other dog away. Then when it was over he switched back to his friendly self.

My 17 week old girl barks and howls whilst I'm out and I hate she gets so worked up but I have to leave her for 2 school runs a day each being about 15 minutes. I leave her a stuffed Kong each time and she's crated though I admit in the day she hates her crate will not stay in it at all, only accepts it at night time. I'm at a loss as I'm having to leave her upset 10x a week. If I don't leave a Kong I can't leave the house before she gets worked up. Not sure how I'm meant to train her when I'm constantly having to leave her over her threshold 🥺
Hello john, what are your thoughts on weighted vests? I’m looking into getting one for our Doberman, but I’m not sure if it’s a necessity. He’s very rambunctious and full of energy and 2 one hour walks don’t seem to tire him out even the slightest. I know the vest could benefit him physically and energy wise, but I’m not sure if I should be putting too much stress on his muscles and joints :/ Great video!
If your dog is getting good exercise, I wouldn’t do it.

@@jessikadayle4878 I wonder if mine is doing that a bit too. She was so good for years, didn't have to crate her and she wouldn't get into anything. But this summer I walked down to the mailbox (30 min) and came back, she had a nickel sized wound. Since then it's everytime I leave now it's open and bigger. I wonder if it's because I took the other dog and not her... I can't walk her and she can't get much exercise in the yard in the winter because I live in a very cold climate. Her chewing is worse in winter. So I'm thinking it has a lot to do with exercise. So I'm definitely gonna try playing with her before I go, making sure I feed her before and try the music thing since I almost always have music or tv on when I'm home, that'll probably help her a lot. @@E.C.Animation yes ours gets jealous if we have the other dog…. It does help if we exercise her before leaving OR spend 20 min going over tricks and training to stimulate her. Ours is 10 months old and just started this chewing thing.
Love your videos. We just got a Doberman puppy (half Euro, half American). We are starting him off in the house like you have done on your videos. But the thing is, we got him so he will eventually be a guard dog for our property. How do we transition him later on from primarily inside dog to a primarily outside guard dog? Thanks.

Thank God I have a normal non-stop always good Doberman Pinscher... nothing has been bad so far... she is not and has not ever been a problem. I have never one time in all my years used a crate... I think that dogs have lived without them for eons and it is unnecessary. If you have to keep a dog in a pen or crate all day... then you DO NOT need a dog right now, because one of you is making the other miserable...
You really found a gem, Zeke! But totally agree with you that a dog shouldn't be kept in a crate all day. Dobermans need tons of exercise, love, mental stimulization, and socialization to be well-rounded. Sounds like you've done a great job and are enjoying the fruits of your labor!
How does that work for people who work for a living?
I got to figure something out my wife and neighbors are fed up with my lil buddy Zeus. He is always tearing stuff up. He is always pacing and in the way in the house when we walk. Digging massive holes in back yard. Always making noise and sneezing in your face and the thing that drives my wife crazy is his pushyness and won't give her space. Please help before I have to choose my wife or my dog!!!
Sounds like a management issue. How old is the Dobe? Check out Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In. They are a working breed and also known as Velcro dogs. Check out Joel Beckman's videos and Susan Garrett's 20 games video especially when it's too cold out to exercise them. Sara Ondrako has an awesome video on making a snuffle mat which helps wear them out and stimulates them mentally. My younger Dobe won't even eat his lunch out of the dish, has to be his snuffle mat. Victoria Stilwell has some awesome videos right in the homes of Dobes too. Hope this helps. You sound like a comedian, hope your wife appreciates you. Lol.
Wow! These are a lot of behavioral issues. No doubt you will have to work on them immediately and one by one. Probably not insurmountable, but, you will ha e to be focused and steadfast in training your dog. I would probably consult a professional to help you. Dobermans need consistency and positive training. You cannot be a lazy owner with a Doberman.

I try by letting him outside as much as possible correcting him when he does wrong and he knows when he does won't cuz he cowers towards the ground. He won't give my wife ANY space he is 1 year old and 4 days. He had so many toys and has a companion our three year old lab Dane mix ally

@@SwaggFamilyAdventures so for the digging, you can give him a place in the back yard that's the dog's pile. Bury bones in that area, put it on command. My neighbor taught her dog to dig on command and now he digs the holes for flowers or her garden so she doesn't have to. For destroying stuff that isn't his, John mentions that in his video. After they loose their puppy teeth, they go through a second phase where they're setting their jaw pressure. My older Dobe was in a crate til about 1.5 yrs not because of a house training issue, just a destruction issue. Just like in John's video, start with the next room, then 10 minutes out talking to the neighbor and you want to vary the times not always increasing the time (sometimes you go back to 5 minutes). Joel Beckman 's satiation video - stuffed Kongs, marrow bones, bully sticks. Go back to where they were last successful as far as the description. Might be progressing too fast or have too much space too soon if the destruction continues. Keep a journal so you can track when the last time the destruction happened and try to figure out why - too long of a time, too much other temptation, etc.
I was a little disturbed by some of the comments left on this video. There are some people really struggling with their Dobes and sound like they are not doing well. I sure hope they take John’s advise from many of these videos or lean on a professional near them. You never want to have a bad Doberman. Let me add that I am a firm believer that it is nearly always the owners fault. These are awesome dogs that require a mature, steadfast, energetic owner. Please do not get one unless you are committed to the proper care, training and socialization required for this breed.
If it makes me a bad person for saying this, then so be it. I adore this breed and wish for people to understand the responsibility involved. I am wishing the best to those who are struggling.

Can I ask you why the hell are you deleting my comments john be a man and speak up instead of just deleting someone's comment really a comment about separation anxiety getting deleted unbelievable are you like having a bad day you're not the only one who has experience with Dobermans to just delete somebody's comment and not tell me why it's being deleted is pretty low down!!!! and I know you are the one doing it because UA-cam would not censor a comment about anxiety in dogs maybe something political or about covid yes two of my comments were totally deleted in less then 30 minutes 🤔 if you do not want people to comment turn the comments off

Ayeni, hiring a canine behaviorist would be the best route to go with your situation. A behaviorist could see your Doberman and his environment in person, and observe the subtle signs he gives off during his interactions. Behavior modification is also something where typically the best approach is to test the dog in different ways, see how he reacts, observe his triggers, and then develop a plan.
That is a good tip! As long as the other dog doesn't also suffer from separation anxiety. But typically they will keep each other company and it will ease that issue, you're right!

I disagree. Dobermans are in a category all its own. When trained and socialized properly, there is no comparison.
No one should have a dobie if you're not going to want you're doberman all of the time. They are people dogs. Sorry. These dogs are not for all.
No one can be with their Doberman 24/7, as much as we would like to be. But you are right, they are people dogs and love spending time with their owners. With many people working at home recently, simple tasks like leaving for a doctor's visit or grocery shopping could cause a problem for ones that have separation anxiety. Hopefully this video helps!
Exactly owning a doberman or any big active dog is a longtime commitment if you don't have the time to exercise him and spend time with your dog don't get one.
@@DobermanPlanet You are so right. I am dealing with this issue now. I try to sneak out when it is his (5 mth old) crate time and he is asleep. When I can, I do take him with me, but I can't take him everywhere, e.g., grocery store, dentist, etc. I'm going to try the tips. Thanks!!!
