  • Silver Springs State Park is known for a few things, its crystal clear spring fed river and its teeming wildlife, especially the monkeys. Yes, there are wild monkeys living throughout Florida and they've actually become a nuisance. Silver Springs though is where you're most likely to encounter them. Will I see them while kayaking the five miles on the Silver Springs Run?
Before now I've only seen a couple of alligators from a kayak but everything changes on this trip. Alligators galore!

Glad you saw the monkeys. I visit Silver Springs every December or January and do the paddle to the Wayside. The monkeys have always been around mile 3. You got some great photos right from the broad walk.

Maybe the monkeys ate the tourists and left the food because they were full. 🤣 What a beautiful spot! I am amazed at how clear the water has been almost everywhere you've been. Glad you've gotten to see so much wildlife. Thanks so much for taking us along on your FL adventures!

These spring fed creeks are amazingly clear. I never imagined they'd be so clear and warm.

The monkeys, I kayaked there and yes we saw lots of monkeys. They were put out there many years ago as a tourist attraction.

30 years ago I went on a tour boat there and the guide said the monkeys were left over from the filming of the movie Tarzan

Wow! Fantastic Voyage, Jay! I have never been to that part of Florida, and never knew there were wild monkeys! Great videography as usual, Jay! By the way, I am starting NoBo on the PCT on April 1st, and I have a question regarding insoles. I am starting out wearing a new pair of Asics Gel Venture 6. I think you wore them also!? Do you remember whether or not you used aftermarket insoles? Or did you just use the thin ones that come with the shoes? Thanks for all your insight, and I look forward to your many adventures!

Have a great time! The PCT is absolutely beautiful. I wore Superfeet green wide or a Powerstep wide that was almost identical. I think the Superfeets are a little slicker so my socks slid better against the surface, reducing friction on my feet. Enjoy and take a ton of pictures! A lot of where you'll go is unbelievably beautiful.

I did not know there were free roaming macaques in Florida. I’m an animal lover but I agree with Wildlife Services that they should be removed . They have spread to another region already. In 2018 they remove about 175 and they got sold to medical testing labs and the practice was stopped. There are friendlier monkeys species to have roaming around I would think, like the South American types. Enjoyable footage , looked like a lovely day. I think you filmed an alligator’s nesting mound early in the video, Wild Kingdom .

I hear they've spread to Tampa and are a nuisance and they're trying to control the population and the spread.

I wonder if that bird (left of alligator) at 8.30ff is a limpkin (Aramus guarauna)?

Aren't you afraid of your kayak tipping over and falling in the water with the gators?

Nyah. The kayak is pretty stable and the alligators mostly stay away from adult humans. There were some big ones out there though!
