I think the one thing that bonds all elliott smith fans together is how we all love him like a family member or a best friend even if we never knew him no other artist has ever impacted me on such a personal level ever and I think alot of us feel that way
greg.i That is the best way I’ve ever heard it put - thank you. He remains my favourite musician and always will and I love the fact that ES fans treasure him so much! His music has helped us all through tough times and I’ll be eternally grateful to him for that. Miss you Elliott.
"And when the kids needed someone most, someone to love and trust, they found one another, and they called themselves the Kids of Appetite, and they lived and they laughed and they saw that it was good."
The ending was improvised after we had been shooting for a few days. We needed to show what Elliott pawned his guitar for and I always liked the way these colorful sodas looked. The kids are my niece and nephews. It did end up fitting the sentiment of the song.
I can't believe that OP is the ACTUAL DIRECTOR, with ALL this insight and besides that, experiences with this artist just as a guy, a friend. HOW is it in 16 years not 1 person has replied to the pin with questions or comments, nothin. Opportunity for 1 degree of separation here. Unreal. Thanks a ton for the upload and pinned comment. That 90s feel just pulls me right back to a more innocent time. In the times you spent with him; crashing at your pad, collaborative times, was he more of a homebody; hiding out between working... or was he more gregarious when off the clock? What was the dude like when he wasn't creating some of the more transcendental music of the 90s and early 2000s..? I dont need his dirty laundry. I just want to get a sense of the guy. Reaching out across 16 years to ask. Thx!! 🤞🏻✌🏻
I only remember that one day that he came to shoot that part of the music video...he was a very calm and collected dude. Very cool to hang around with...I believe Beck was with us that day as well.
How could anybody downvote this? I listened to this song every day for almost a year after my lover died of cancer in 2004. It held such emotion for my personal experience I was going through at the time. "So you got in some kind of trouble, nobody knows" ??? ok. "I'm a junkyard of false starts" ... sums up my life... while the moon does it's division.
Been listening to E.S. Since 2004. Never gets old. Coolest dude of all dudes. Wish I could have been old enough to know him when he was alive. He died when I was 16 just like Ritter and Cash. Damn.
Elliott does not have one bad song.. However this is my favorite of his.. I love the line.. While the moon does its division You're buried below...goosebumps..
"Expression, for me, does not reside in passions glowing in a human face or manifested by violent movement." The 'Kids of Appetite' will always be my favorite book.
No, not just a couple of his songs. I've listened to every album of his time and time again, in fact he is just about all I listen to. And it gets more beautiful with every listen.
I have always been a big fan of Elliott. I have not heard this song that much and it is a real gem. This is true Elliott Smith song writing. He was one of the best. Wish his life could have been happier.
This is a beautiful video, Ross. Not only is it reminiscent of another time but it has its own lighthearted story that is easily witnessed even without context. Thanks. You aught to be be proud and humbled for being involved in this bit of music history.
Nice work Ross!!! Elliott was an inspiration in my life. I have a good friend who used to work at Dreamworks in the music division before it folded....he turned me onto some great stuff by Elliott. Thanks for posting this.
“Coming Up Roses by Elliott Smith. It’s on his self-titled record. Lo-fi and melodic and perfect-perfect. Pretty much everything Elliott ever recorded had that sort of so-honest-it’s-terrifying quality...”
He does play all the insterments in his self title album.... this song is in it so yes. PS- Neil Gust played guitar in "Single File" and Rebecca Gates sings harmony in "st Ides Heaven".
I love this song, and really dig the music video, its really simple. I like the part at 1:34 were it just shows Elliott topple over with his guitar. XO Elliott

Personally my favourite Elliott line is
‘Watching the dying day,
Blushing in the sky’
He’s the best songwriter ever.

+Risk Records bless you
After my fiance died this song was one of the only constants in my life. Still breaks my heart a little to listen to it 3 years later.
My personal suggestion is that someone could downvote this if he/she didn't like the video. But I'm not expert in the current downvote meta on UA-cam.
One of my favorite songs, ever.
until we're old-new
