- If you've seen pictures of the Colosseum in Rome, then you already know that it used to be the hot spot in town to go see a Gladiator fight. Everyone would come out to watch fierce men in armor put on a show, but really they were fighting for their lives. In today's epic video we're going to take a look at what life was really like for an ancient Gladiator warrior!

It's interesting that not many gladiators really died in the arena, they were essentially like modern day athletes and they were expensive to train
You could probably die doing literally anything and everything at this period of time so a job that had a likelihood of death probably wouldn’t have mattered anyway

The video mentions that gladiators who fought well were often spared. So to use a modern day moniker, watching a sporting event is much more exciting if the two teams are close to each other in points, and the game could still go either way, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Even if your team ultimately loses, you'll mostly be satisfied watching it.
On the other hand, if your team keeps making huge mistakes, like say repeated fumbles or interceptions in American football, or the baseball pitcher keeps throwing pitches that even the crappiest batter on the other team is able to hit, after a while you'd probably get bored of it, and wouldn't want to watch it anymore.
So likewise, a gladiator that fought bravely even if they ultimately lose, would likely be spared so they could fight again. Whereas one that cowers in fear and keeps running away would probably earn the crowd's ire, and they'd likely call for that coward to die once they were finally defeated.
Actually I have seen multiple documentaries that claim gladiators ate mostly fruits/vegetables/and starchs bc they didn’t want to pay for meat for them. But it turned out it made them capable of insane athletic feats
They tend to have more fat compared to what is shown on movies which tend to help avoid bleeding out as much. They use lentils as their major source of protein and they have to eat a lot since vegetable and carbs tend to not be as filling as meat. Meat were generally designated for high or elite classes.
Actually studies in gladiator remains showed they mainly lived on plant based diets and didnt really have luxuries such as meat.. also unlike how they are generally portrayed, they didnt tend to be very ripped and muscular and were often overweight (more body fat gives more protection to lacerations from blades/animals).
So they were fat vegans? Bah.
That doesn't really make sense since if they really didn't have luxuries such as meat how would they become fat in the first place? The athletic gladiators make more sense

man could you imagine being the biggest strongest and scariest man in your area and you become a gladiator, go into a match and your paired up against just a goliath of a man and just destroys you lol. i wonder how often that happened
You have a good point, but like today's weight classes, they we're split into divisions of type of gladiator skill level etc thus to avoid such conflict as a goliath and say a skinny small debutant as this would not be a good fight and won't intrigue the crowd, but a interesting point though

Haha I know who you mean, but I think the bear he fought wasn't as ferocious and starved as the animals in the arena. Because if a bear were to use claws and fangs, no grappling skills would help you.

eventually they ended up banning gladiatorial battles after a christian monk went into the arena to stop a fight and was killed..... but this was towards the end of the western empire after adopting christianity.

If I had to fight a gladiator that was stronger than me, I would cuddle myself in the corner of the arena, put my shield infront of me and have my weapon sticking at the corner of the shield. Then, when the gladiator comes I would say "Please, please! Spare me! I admit that you are stronger than me! Have mercy, sir!"

I went on a guided tour to the Colosseum recently and our tour guide said that gladiator vs gladiator fights are "fake news" and never really happened. Idk what to believe now and why they (Italian tour guides) spread such information as part of the tours and the denial, if it were actually true.
