This is awesome I’ve always been a bit concerned about getting colour tattoos because of my skin tone I’m glad to see there’s great artists out here doing amazing work 👌🏽✅
I wouldn't bother with colour tattoos to be honest. The fading looks horrible and you have to keep getting touch ups for as long as you have the tattoo.
Hair stylists (and makeup artists) are like this too. I've known people who've had their hair ruined by white women who just refuse to understand hair that isn't thin and straight. Even my sister (white and just has thick hair) has had to get a ton chopped off and hours brushing because they don't know how to treat thick hair, let alone curly. I was always told that you can't call yourself a hair stylist, or good at makeup, and similar respects like a good tattoo artists, if you can't work on all hair/skin. I'm really glad they're making more videos talking about this cause someone having darker skin than you're used to is a bullshit reason to refuse a tattoo and you should learn the colors and stuff for it.
I’m really excited you did this video. I watched Ink Master for the first few seasons and it really bothered me how down they were on coloured tattoos on dark skin. Of course with the right technique you can have colourful tattoos on dark skin, but all these artists on tv never bothered to figure out how. I hope to see that attitude fade a bit over the next few years.
You couldn’t pack more irony into this video! lol Where are the examples of great work on dark skin? Every example shown was white or light skin, like WTF. 🤷♂️
Back in the 90s, at least where I lived, a lot of tattoo artists where white and said they can't do bright colors or it's not worth getting a tattoo done. I know its bogus and laziness but it was literally a struggle to find someone trust worthy, sanitary, and would actually talk to you based on their experience with tattooing.
Ryan has a true Artist mentality. He knows he’s not 100% and he continues to want to learn & grow. What an amazing inspiration and human. Keep up the great work man. ⭐️
This is the only video I've clicked on from this channel. If more videos were like this, instead of tattoo artists critiquing I'd definitely subscribe to and watch this channel.
Like beyonce said there is complexities in complexions. I understand that, but sis she is not dark skinned. We need a Kelly Rowland or Nomi type in this video.
Hopefully this is the first of many videos on this topic. I think it's important for all the artists to learn on a variety of skin colors in order to make the most appropriate decisions for each individual client.
I appreciate the vid and the artist’s story but I guess I was hoping there was more info about whether certain tattoo styles lend better on dark skin and if there are specific risks people of color should be aware of/consider that white people typically don’t have to worry about.
City of ink in Atlanta ; Miya Bailey and all artist he has taught do excellent color work on dark skin. Just like he said on the video if you go to the right artist they can answer your question and give you an excellent tattoo based on your skin tone
so happy to finally see a video like this. would be awesome to see artists actually talking about how it is different to tattooing lighter skin, different techniques that are used, things to take into consideration like what colours work and don't work, etc.
Christian Harrison you buggin tf out lol Nip voice is extremely calm he always sound like he woke up and his voice is deeper than that but the l.a accent
I feel like yall didn't use any of the questions that were in the post asking about what you would like to ask a tattoo artist specializing in dark skin
Thank you. I've been waiting for a video like this for a while. I wish more people talked about it, because every tattoo artist's portfolio that I look at, never has examples of tattoos on dark skin (black and white or color). I just want to find an artist that does the style I like and is also comfortable with tattooing on my dark skin tone.
The thing is, you can do colour on dark skin. Not super dark, but there are plenty of artists who have pulled off great vibrant colours on darker skin. It kills me that people act like unless INKED or Ink Master mentions something that it never existed outside of that bubble n
makes tons of sense. When I did hair I made it a point to learn all hair. I would work in a Chicago North Ave shop(hair Cuttery) during the week for a steady pay check but on weekends I worked with black barbers to learn their trade as well. Today I'm a nurse but back in the day my goal was never to turn money away. I learned how to cut black & white men, color and curl white & black women hair. It was about learning and respecting the trade to provide a good service & collect that cash in the process. It also allowed me to move around and re-establish myself easily. I went back to school for nursing while working for hair club for men & women. Never limit yourself. Hair is hair & skin is skin. Same chemically but characteristically different.
I love Ryan Henry's honesty. Over the years I have learned how to properly research my tattoo artist. And yes ladies and gentlemen I'm a beautiful deep chocolate sister. I Love Pooch and Steve Botcher. Pooch keeps it real.
This is my favorite video. I've been trying to figure out my tattoo journey for some time now and I strive for this solid application of dedication, discipline and patience as I learn. Thank you Ryan Henry and Inked.
Yeah there are. There were nothing but brown people. Of all shades. Alot of his work is cover ups and redos from other tattoos. Some of his work is really really good and some just average. However in every piece you tell he did his best for that person's skin tone.
He legitimately gives me hope when it comes to getting a color tattoo on my skin. I thought I was limited to black and gray but now I know and expect better for myself. Excellent video.
SO much respect for this dude. crazy skilled, yet so much humility with what he does. he definitely sends out a good message to anyone wanting to be a tattoo artist.
So much respect for this man as a black male Artist I look up to Ryan and I legit want to learn from him . And he’s the only one on black ink period hat actually focuses on the ART
So happy to see this. I've had doubts about covering some marks with memorial art but I know artists actually care to learn. Success doesn't look like just one thing. This is encouraging
I feel like vh1 focus on the dramatic and drama side of black ink not the artistic and beauty of the art they make there I support them and I like the show but we need more inspiration from black owned businesses not drama and rachetness
Ppl need to stop watching then. If ppl don't watch love and hip hop, black ink etc then maybe more shows like that will come about. All about money at the end of the day
Yo this has been my hardest issue. I’ve have tattoos I don’t like because I feel they didn’t know how to tattoo blacks. I always ask a artist to see different pigments they’ve tatted. Plenty of great tattooers but hard to find ones that are good at tattooing dark pigment. One day I’ll find a artist near me that’s good at tatting my pigment.
I'm saving this clip. I remember when I got my tattoo the artist wasn't sure if I could use yellow, orange, and (some other color) because it might not show up like I imagined it would and I wanted to cry. I love my art but I always wish I insisted on the original design.
Much respect to Ryan!!! It’s great to learn about your craft. It makes sense that you need different contrast for different complexions. I learned something from this.
Everything this man said is 100% correct he speaks in a way that is not offensive to his own people yet his point is well understood not to mention this man is from my city I never knew who this cat was until now but now that I know who he is I am definitely going to have this man do my whole back piece for me thank you UA-cam....
I’m scared to get a tattoo cause I feel I am too dark. Whenever I say this to people they’re like omg, you’re brown you’re not even that dark tattoos will definitely show on you, but idc maybe In my head I’m darker than I actually am but i just don’t want my tattoo to look like dirt.
For my next Tattoo, I know imma throw down a few hundred dollars. I have been researching artist who primarily tattoo Black Skin. I want that artist to collect. And I want a bomb tattoo for my skin.
I have to agree with this. I was shocked when I got my first tattoo I was like it’s that much for the tattoo. It was 2 sessions and I spent about 500 on the whole thing. Everyday I look at it and I fall in love with it again. There are times that I do forget it’s there and people ask about it and I love telling the story about it. Amazing artist will charge and they will do a damn good job.
My advice for dark skin is to do American tradition. It’s very bold and stands out. I met a black guy with a whole traditional tattoo sleeve and it looked amazing
Claire it would , it depends on the ink and the width of the flourishes and swirls of the design. you should never see your skin tone as a problem. you must be from St Lucia or Dominica
I would love to get a tattoo from Ryan Henry😊 The part where he talks about some artists not even wanting to tattoo people who are "too tan", I can definitely relate to. An artist once told me to come back after my skin lightened up a bit!... I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for some black people/people with darker skin complexion who have to deal with that kind of discrimination on a daily basis😔
Thank you very much! I’ve been tattooing for 13 years I was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship in my second year at Eric’s tattoos in Jacksonville Florida... by that time I had already learned how to tattoo and was giving just thrown on the line type of work... I already knew the experience was not just me
We need an entire series on this. I tried looking up more information on this and there was only a couple videos that went into depth. Talking about skin undertones and how the more pigment in your skin might turn up differently. I’d love to see him talk more about this so more people can learn rather than passing up black people or anyone with dark skin.
So I’m a tattoo artist and I had a dark skin client. He wanted a hurt lion protecting its cubs on his arm. This was my first dark skinned client and i didn’t really know how the ink would show up on his skin. I thought about turning him down because I was afraid it wouldn’t look good. After our session he told me that another tattoo artist had turned him down because of his skin and asked me if I would do as well. I went thru with it and to be honest it turned out so beautiful on him. The meaning behind the tattoo being the fact the he was the lion protecting his kids made me feel so good on the inside.
I really wish tattoo artists would feature tattoos on their darker skinned clients in the portfolios . I’m so hesitate on booking a consultation just off the lack of diversity alone.

Ryan Henry was too in this interview humble. Give yourself the credit you deserve because your work and professionalism is 100.
Right lol Like literally no one is this video was dark skin
Right this video cant be more misleading

Back in the 90s, at least where I lived, a lot of tattoo artists where white and said they can't do bright colors or it's not worth getting a tattoo done. I know its bogus and laziness but it was literally a struggle to find someone trust worthy, sanitary, and would actually talk to you based on their experience with tattooing.

Ryan has a true Artist mentality. He knows he’s not 100% and he continues to want to learn & grow. What an amazing inspiration and human. Keep up the great work man. ⭐️
I love how genuine and passionate he his. A true artist who respects and masters his craft and is inspiring others to do the same thing.
I'm a dark skin brotha and all my tattoos show perfectly. A Mexican Kat did all of them
Hey random person reading the comments!! Have a good day ❤

Hey random person you have a good day as well.
dont tell me what to do
Thanks! Have a good day as well!
@@kenners4975 😂😂😂😂
Wish I could see some darker skin tattoo just him talking bout it
This is the only video I've clicked on from this channel. If more videos were like this, instead of tattoo artists critiquing I'd definitely subscribe to and watch this channel.
I love how humble he is and explains how he came up. He give kudos to those who got him there and he's open to learning more. Love it..
yes omg, humble king lets go. No one had to look and like your work, but they do have to respect it. I loved this.
Like beyonce said there is complexities in complexions. I understand that, but sis she is not dark skinned. We need a Kelly Rowland or Nomi type in this video.
THANK YOUUUUU WE ARE ALWAYS LEFT OUT ON THIS TOPIC THANK YOU RYANNNN AND INK MASTER DO BETTER ON DIVERSITY
Hopefully this is the first of many videos on this topic. I think it's important for all the artists to learn on a variety of skin colors in order to make the most appropriate decisions for each individual client.
This really opened my eyes, I scrolled through some of my favorite tattoo artists instagrams and I couldnt find one tattoo on a darker skin color.
Also check out @drkskinbodyart ...it’s the biggest and best tattoo art collective on Instagram that showcases nothing but tattoos on black skin
I appreciate the vid and the artist’s story but I guess I was hoping there was more info about whether certain tattoo styles lend better on dark skin and if there are specific risks people of color should be aware of/consider that white people typically don’t have to worry about.
LaRon Mathews Thanks man! I will check it out.🙏🏽
@@fxvillarta from what I've been told black and grey looks a lot better on darker skin and in terms of colour red is the go to
City of ink in Atlanta ; Miya Bailey and all artist he has taught do excellent color work on dark skin. Just like he said on the video if you go to the right artist they can answer your question and give you an excellent tattoo based on your skin tone
I am black, kinda medium, I have lots of bright watercolor work
so happy to finally see a video like this. would be awesome to see artists actually talking about how it is different to tattooing lighter skin, different techniques that are used, things to take into consideration like what colours work and don't work, etc.
He gives me Nipsey Hussle vibes when he speaks💯
What?
Agreed! I got that too...
Christian Harrison you buggin tf out lol Nip voice is extremely calm he always sound like he woke up and his voice is deeper than that but the l.a accent
I feel like yall didn't use any of the questions that were in the post asking about what you would like to ask a tattoo artist specializing in dark skin
omar westmaas he really didn’t answer any questions at all, just spoke about his experience and history
@@necrosim which is what i meant
There were no dark skin models in the video.
❤️💯 means a lot finally watching a video like this:) nice one Inked
Im glad to hear this and hope more tattoo artist are inspired to master tattooing dark skin
We need more videos with more artist talking about this.
Thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you. I've been waiting for a video like this for a while. I wish more people talked about it, because every tattoo artist's portfolio that I look at, never has examples of tattoos on dark skin (black and white or color). I just want to find an artist that does the style I like and is also comfortable with tattooing on my dark skin tone.
This artist seems very humble, yet well-informed! great to see
This was so inspiring,it's good to see tattoo artist be honest and down to earth and he seems so serious about his craft
Every one of those tattoo shows should have some type of dark skin challenge
Exactly
Please do more videos like this; about tattoos on dark skin..
It would really help educate some of us dark skin people!!

Who else just loves Ryan????? Such a level headed cool guy....
Extremely humble guy
Sexy too 😂😂
amazed that in 2019 the way the industry has gotten so popular, there are very few videos addressing this, well done bro
this topic is so important. more of this please.
This is my favorite video. I've been trying to figure out my tattoo journey for some time now and I strive for this solid application of dedication, discipline and patience as I learn. Thank you Ryan Henry and Inked.
This is the content we need! Please make more videos on this subject!
This is exactly why Miryam Lumpini needs to be on the Inked UA-cam channel 😤 She is a MASTER of darker skinned tattooing, with colors!
loveharrydaily her work is AMAZINGG ✨
There are no dark skin ppl in this video. Then if you go to this dudes Instagram there are no dark skin tattoos.
Yeah there are. There were nothing but brown people. Of all shades. Alot of his work is cover ups and redos from other tattoos. Some of his work is really really good and some just average. However in every piece you tell he did his best for that person's skin tone.
I really appreciate this man mindset and determination.
Very smooth interview , He is informative and real at the same time.
He legitimately gives me hope when it comes to getting a color tattoo on my skin. I thought I was limited to black and gray but now I know and expect better for myself. Excellent video.

I love my medium dark skin, my bright color over my stretch marks, and the white pops so much.
SO much respect for this dude. crazy skilled, yet so much humility with what he does. he definitely sends out a good message to anyone wanting to be a tattoo artist.
So much respect for this man as a black male Artist I look up to Ryan and I legit want to learn from him .
And he’s the only one on black ink period hat actually focuses on the ART

this video made me feel so much better about tattooing my medium toned skin
So happy to see this. I've had doubts about covering some marks with memorial art but I know artists actually care to learn. Success doesn't look like just one thing. This is encouraging
I feel like vh1 focus on the dramatic and drama side of black ink not the artistic and beauty of the art they make there I support them and I like the show but we need more inspiration from black owned businesses not drama and rachetness
Ppl need to stop watching then. If ppl don't watch love and hip hop, black ink etc then maybe more shows like that will come about. All about money at the end of the day
I have seen Pooch's phenomenal work. I'm proud of the true grit that my people show throughout the world.
So much love, humility, and respect in this conversation. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
FINALLY SOMEBODY MADE THIS VIDEO. I been searching for this sort of things for MONTHS
Man I’m gonna need check out his work/shop.
So raw at it Ryan, thank you
This type of content just makes me wanna go to Ryan off tops because he mention this when most locals or whoever wouldn't they just bread hungry !
Didnt know Ryan hair was so silky smooth. He always had it low
Ryan is making moves than ceaser right now
If a tattoo artist complains or say that can’t tattoo dark skin, they are just not a good tattoo artist, period.
More of this please! A lot of unanswered questions.
I need more of this. I wanna know more tattoo artists that deals with darker/melanated skintones.

Man you’re taking the words out of my mouth
He’s very modest, but his hard work really shows.
Ryan Bro you are truly a ink master to me , love this interview
My advice for dark skin is to do American tradition. It’s very bold and stands out. I met a black guy with a whole traditional tattoo sleeve and it looked amazing
I love his articulation and obvious love for his craft
This video is eye opening af...
Honestly my skintone is one of the main reasons why I don’t have any tattoos, it wouldn’t be visible anyways.
I already knew the experience was not just me
He is SO fine my lord.
I always thought why tattoos on black people looked like a scribble,it looks dyslexic, good thing I found this vid

Selina, you could have just said, i rendered the lion well, but not act as if you took on a poor wounded pigeon and you saved its life.
