I have to say that this is one of the most amazing bass parts I have ever heard. It's like it goes around in simple little circles between the chords using every conceivable climb up or down and timing to get there.
    Simplicity and complexity existing simultaneously..
    Schrödinger's bass part? LOL
Can I assume that Mr Wonder was playing something else with his right hand at the same time he was playing this with his left?
Major props to him either way. Some people have just way too much talent.
    LOL
When I am "in the groove" I can hear stuff like that in my head, but can never get it to come out of my fingers the same way I'm hearing it. I think learning this will help my overall playing skills tremendously, on whichever instrument I'm playing (guitar, bass, keyboard).
And you've got it all laid out perfectly for me to work my way through from beginning to end.
Thank you so much, Greg. You rock!

hi jstnxprsn! I like the way you said that - Simplicity and complexity existing simultaneously - nice ;)

@@BassCovers Thanks, Greg. To be honest I've been playing bass a long time and cover things like Smooth Operator note for note, but this style is a little different than I'm used to. Your breakdown of the climbing and descending scales as an exercise should really help a lot. I think the hardest thing for me will be remermber so many fills and the arrangement. I'm old now and my memory is not what it used to be. These days I always use lyric sheets for instance because I will forget words on songs I've sung for 40 years. If you have any tips on remembering which fills go with which turnaround, that would be helpful. Of course, I have noticed that the fills become increasingly busy and complex the further in you go.
Btw, that rundown you do at 3:37 is EPIC and already lives in my head somewhere. LOL
Also, glad you enjoyed my comment.
I cracked myself up with the Shrodinger's Bass Part analogy.
Thanks again, brother. Your help will be invaluable to the next step in my evolution as a musician.

@@jstnxprsn hey justnxprsn, I wish I had a simple quick answer for you...but I don't :) Personally, I think the best way to play and remember fills is to know what chord you're playing and what notes will fit that chord. Otherwise, it's just memorizing things...which for me is getting harder as the days go by ;) If you'd like to chat more, please contact at inquiries@muzento.com and we can go in-depth a little more...thanks! :)

@@BassCovers Greg - What a kind and generous offer. I'll keep it mind depending on how things go.
It's really funny because earlier today it actually occurred to me that I should focus on the chord notes rather than the patterns, as a way of keeping better track of what comes next instead of memorizing a ton of patterns. That way the "feel" of the arrangement should guide me. So your advice was spot on. Thanks so much. "Great minds..." eh? LOL
Now where'd I put that box with the cat in..?

Thank you so much Greg! I saw Stevie Wonder in concert in the 80s at the LA Forum and love this song. Fast forward to 2022 Covid era, picked up the bass and tried and miserably failed at playing this and Fas Fast forward t0 2023, a year and half later and I can just about nail this song 80% of the time. LOL Much appreciate your uploads and tutorial!

Stevie was like 16-25 when he released the large majority of his hits litterly one after another every 6 months just monstrous albums. And James a few with Stevie whether they were Stevie composed idk but he definitely was known for writing the whole bass line on the keys (boogie on reggae women and superstition being the most obvious to me)

Try using parts you like from both. It's something that will keep changing over time, the better you come to know the song. Hope that answers your question?

Hi, thanks for you signing up on Muzento and my apologies you're having trouble. You most likely just need to choose "Learning Songs" at the advanced level. After that, choose the song from the list and complete the necessary fields. If you need more help, please contact me at inquiries@muzento.com Thanks

I’m listening to this and realizing I never actually listened to the bass. But from what I can hear from it’s insane complexity this was almost certainly played by Bob Babbit or James Jameson.
Edit: I was most certainly wrong.
