Our semiconductor/electronics industry is too dependent on imports as this video has pointed out. It is largely engaged in assembly only and has very little value added. Silicon wafers which are the main raw material for semiconductors are primarily made out of sand which we have plenty of and yet up to now we still don't produce them locally. If Bong Bong even has a modicum of industrial policy a wafer fab should be one of his priorities so we don't have to import them and help boost our trade surplus as well. It will also help attract firms engaged in chip design. Technological maturity with regards to it's production doesn't happen overnight which is why we should start now rather than later. In the age of AI, robotics and more globalized competition we cannot be complacent and just be satisfied with whatever we have. We want an automotive industry and yet we don't even produce our own aluminum ingots which is one of the most important materials that go into building cars, motorcycles, trucks, etc.
